Christian Aid Week

This year's Christian Aid Week (10th to 16th May 2020) the emphasis is on climate crisis and the disastrous effect it has on so many people and communities particularly in the third world. 

Christian Aid proposes a new deal for Climate Justice to be supported by the British government and all those in power by: 

1. Transferring its fair share of finance and technology to poorer countries. 

2. Curbing the over-consumption that’s driving climate breakdown. 

3. Stopping fossil fuel expansion and supporting renewable energy. 

4. Developing renewable energy without exploiting people or destroying the environment in the global South. 

5. Investing to decarbonise the UK economy in a way that also addresses economic and social inequalities in the UK. 

Besides promoting this initiative, CA continues to help individuals and communities to survive the effects of drought, flood etc. For instance Eastern Kenya has been without significant rain for over 400 days, people are starving, lives made incredibly harder and help is so desperately needed.

Milford adults & kids prepare for VE Day

May Day is traditionally held on a Monday but this year has been put back to Friday 8 May 2020. 

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe in 1945. This year is the 75th Anniversary.

The people of Milford on Sea are renowned for celebrating anything they can think of, so it is a great shame to miss this special occasion, but this virus is affecting everything. However, this village doesn't give up that easily!

The Milford on Sea Royal British Legion have had to cancel their planned Big Band event in the community centre. 

However, Paul White who lives close to the village green, plans to set up a PA system and at 11am on Friday (8th May) play the last post followed by the reveille after the two minutes silence. 

David Graham, of the Milford on Sea Royal British Legion will be there with the Branch Standard. (Social distancing of course)

Kids Pictures Wanted to Decorate The Smugglers Fence

Sadly we cannot go ahead with our planned celebrations for this day. But we would like to ask the children of the village to help us out.

We are struggling to source enough decorations to put round our fencing so we are asking if any of the children would like to draw us some flags, pictures etc all related to VE Day to hopefully surround our fencing with bunting. 

If you can help out please put your picture in a clear plastic folder or laminate and pop through the letter box by Thursday 7th . Even popping them in a carrier bag would do... come on lets do a virtual celebration from the Smugglers inn.

We understand that we are in strange and scary times for everyone, life is very different now than it has ever been before. Your GP surgery has changed and feels very different. We hope this article will help you to deal with your medical concerns.

Our priorities during this time will be to focus on the most unwell patients. Many of our patients will have medical problems that have nothing to do with COVID 19. Some things won’t go away whilst we all fight this crisis. All the usual serious problems like heart problems, depression, strokes and cancer won’t stop because we are dealing with an epidemic.

• Can this problem wait and if so for how long?
• Can it wait until the end of the crisis? 
• What can I do in the meantime?

Have a look at www.nhs.uk or www.111.nhs.uk or www.patient.info to see if you can find out more about your problem. There may be self-care tips or a pharmacy may be able to help first.

If you need medical help, we are still here for you and have our full team in place at Wistaria & Milford Surgeries. 

All our staff are adhering to the government guidelines regarding social distancing whilst at work.

We will continue to limit face to face appointments; however it’s still very important we bring in some patients who require screening or immunisations and we will continue to see patients where appropriate.

You should continue to attend your appointment, unless you have been told not to attend or have COVID symptoms. 

All our GPs and nurses are triaging appointments requests and we will only bring you into the surgery if necessary (all our clinicians wear PPE).

If you need medical help from your GP practice, you can contact us either online, by an app or by phone to be assessed.

• If you need urgent medical help, use the NHS 111 online service. If you cannot get help online, call 111.
• If it’s a serious or life-threatening emergency, you must still call 999.
• If you are told to go to hospital it is important that you go to hospital.

Prescriptions

You can order your repeat prescriptions on the NHS App and through your GP surgery or pharmacy’s online service, where available.

We will contact you should you not have a designated pharmacy to ensure you only need to visit the surgery premises if absolutely necessary.

If you need to collect a prescription and have coronavirus symptoms or are self-isolating at home – please arrange for a friend, relative or volunteer to collect for you.

To help us to keep supplying medicines to everyone who needs them, please only order repeat prescriptions in your usual quantities at the usual time.

Routine vaccinations

It is important that you or your baby or child still have routine vaccinations. They protect against serious and potentially deadly illnesses and stop outbreaks in the community.

If the person needing vaccination has coronavirus symptoms or is self-isolating because someone in the household is displaying symptoms, please contact your GP practice for advice.

Cancer Concerns

If you have a symptom that you are worried about, you must contact your GP.

Your clinician will discuss with you the benefits of starting or continuing your cancer treatment against the increased risks of contracting coronavirus.

Patients with Chest Pain

If you think you or a family member are suffering with the symptoms of a heart attack you must dial 999 immediately.

If you or a family member develop symptoms such as heavy or tight chest pain that may spread to your arms, neck or jaw, or make you breathless, sick, sweaty or light-headed and that doesn’t go away, this could be caused by a heart attack. Dial 999 immediately.

Stroke Patients

If you think you or a family member are suffering with the symptoms of a stroke you must dial 999 immediately.

You can spot the symptoms of a stroke by using the FAST test:

Face - is the face drooping / fallen on one side? Can they smile?

Arms - can they raise both arms and keep them there?

Speech - is it slurred?

Time to call 999 if you see any of the above signs

Pregnant Women

If you are pregnant it is important that you still attend your antenatal appointments and continue to seek advice from your midwife or maternity team.

If you are worried about your health or the health of your unborn baby, please contact your midwife or maternity team.

Parents of young children

If you are worried about the health of your baby or child, please call 111.

If it’s a serious or life-threatening emergency, call 999

Cervical Cytology (smears)

Please do not ignore your routine cytology recall letter; it is really important you book a smear appointment we are still providing these. We are willing to make your appointment at short notice to coincide with your monthly cycle and ensure you get this important screening completed.

Mental Health

NHS is here to support your mental health during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as your physical health.

If you are concerned about the mental health of your child, please contact your GP or check online self-referral options for under 18 years olds click here.

If you are facing mental health issues contact your GP or key worker, if you have one, and continue to access your mental health services as usual. We are also still open for new referrals, via your GP or online.

Colin Judson entertains on Instagram

International opera singer, Colin Judson is currently in lockdown at his home in Milford on Sea.

Like other artists and entertainers, live productions are a memory for now and when they will return no one knows.

After 30 years at the top of his profession Colin is looking to keep himself sane and busy.

Alongside running to keep fit, he is now posting tips on singing, and songs both funny and moving on his Instagram feed (colin.judson) for all to enjoy.  Also posted are clips with tips of about 1 minute which Colin did for English National Opera including a couple of question and answer sessions.

A message from Tim, Nikki and The South Lawn Team:

Hello Milford

The 5th edition of our At Home menu (see on link at bottom of page) may be our last edition prior to lockdown being eased. Who knows whats to come but whatever happens we remain dedicated to looking after you.

Whilst we have one eye on the lockdown being lifted we realise that it may also be some time before we have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the hotel. We are already working on a plan and we want you to know that when we are allowed to re-open our aim will be to provide you with an amazing dining experience that has absolute regard for the safety of us all. 

At South Lawn we relish a challenge and our team brain storming ideas yet again focus on adapting to the ever changing circumstances. Dining out is likely to be different for some time but that doesn't mean your experience will be any less enjoyable. Once the parameters are defined by the Government we will start our preparations which are likely to include a redesign of layout, layup and service standards. 

We also know that many of you may not wish to venture out for all sorts of reasons and it has been a pleasure looking after a new customer base that is hoping we will continue our At Home service after all this becomes a distant memory. It will come as no surprise to you that we have deliveries every day to local residents who irrelevant to Coronavirus find it difficult to get out.

We have one lady who's son lives afar and he ordered her lunch for Easter Sunday as a treat. She called us on the Monday asking how she could continue to order from us. This lady was not confident to pay over the phone and neither did she have any cash in the house. We offered to set her up an account but she was concerned how she would clear it.

We took it upon ourselves to call her son to explain and he spoke with Mum who now has a daily meal from us on account which he settles each Monday. We think there are many more people who worry about modern payment methods who are missing out, if you know somebody like this why not speak to them or a relative. It could make a huge difference to them.

The order will be delivered Friday morning. Delivery is free for orders of £14 or more. For orders of less than £14.00 a small delivery charge of £2.00 is applied. ​Please do bear with us at this busy time. We will respond to your emails in the order we receive them but there may be a slight delay at times. 

For these local deliveries, we are switching away from our plastic packaging (it is fully recyclable I hasten to add) to our Kraft compostable packaging, which we use for our events. It goes in the freezer perfectly and will be fully labelled for you.

Donate your old tools for a new life

Tony Styles is the local Milford on Sea collector for the TWAM charity, and they would like any old tools or sewing equipment that you might have please.

Have you been clearing out your shed with all the spare time? If you have found any unwanted tools or a sewing machines they could be very useful to less fortunate people.

TWAM stands for 'Tools with a Mission' and it is a Christian charity enabling people to earn a living and support themselves and their families. 

In many countries people have few skills, little education and no means of earning a living. A switch from aid dependency to self-sufficiency is impossible without help. 

TWAM started over thirty years ago, and has since provided this help by collecting and refurbishing tools and equipment no longer required in the UK and sending them overseas. Through collectors and refurbishment centres across the UK, our team of dedicated volunteers and supporters help transform thousands of lives every year.

All TWAM collectors have stopped collecting while Government restrictions remain in place. But you can still contact your nearest collector to let them know you have some tools to donate and they will add you to their waiting list.

An enterprising group of local people have put together a 'Good News Newsletter' with the aim of keeping everyone informed and amused during this difficult time.

The Good News Newsletter has been created by Milford Library, Milford Mutual Aid Group, The Village Voice and MoS News Bulletin.

We will be publishing a copy of each edition here online and for those in the village who do not use digital communication, the Parish Council are printing some paper copies which will be available in some village shops and some distributed by volunteers.

PPE Offer to Care Homes and Other Providers

The Rotary Club of Becton & District in conjunction with New Forest Sewing for the NHS are offering PPE to local care homes and other providers.

Thanks to the magnificent efforts of all the volunteers who have been making and distributing PPE to our local hospitals they are now able to extend the help we offer to Care Homes and Providers in the general New Forest area. If you have a need for Scrubs, Scrub Bags, Hats, Disposable Gowns and Headstraps then they can help you.

If you are a care provider in need of PPE then just get in touch. Let them know your requirements by email to ppe@bectonrotary.org.uk. Each email must contain a Contact Name, Telephone Number, Organisation name and postal address.

Sewing for the NHS: Update 2

1st May 2020: Weekly Update from Larry Anthony, Secretary of The Rotary Club of Becton & District.

It has been an eventful week with the priority switching to the supply of plastic gowns which are now being made with a new heat bonding process that removes the need for sewing which was causing problems with some of the machines. We are pleased to advise that we have despatched 400 much needed gowns this week.

Scrubs are being despatched to local hospitals and care homes with consignments of scrub hats also being made to Lymington & Southampton General Hospital. Evidence of the need and what it means to those who receive them was a nurse who travelled from Southampton to pick up a set of scrubs and made a very poignant comment “this means more than you could know”. Scrubs bags are currently in good supply but we remain alert to the needs of the community.

We continue to be grateful to Sanders Sails for the enormous help they provide by cutting out patterns for use by the sewing volunteers. 

Fundraising by Becton & District Rotary Club is doing well with £710 showing in our Just Giving page, other direct donations have boosted the fund to approximately £1,600. Money remains an ongoing need for the purchase of replacement materials as production continues to meet demand. Recent donors include the Rotary Club of Bransgore and New Milton Lions. Many other donors wish to remain anonymous but their generosity is very welcome. Thank you to everybody who has contributed to the fund.

Anyone lost their Sun Hat & Specs?

An observant resident has let us know that there is a male sun hat and a pair of spectacles on a bench in the wooded are of the Pleasure Gardens, on the seat near the bridge to the board walk. They have been there several days and it is likely that the owner would like to retrieve them. 

Whoever he is, he might need someone to give him a hand to get them, as he won't be able to see his hat and glasses without his glasses! 

Clapping in the street for the NHS and more

Over the past weeks, residents across Milford on Sea have enthusiastically clapped on a Thursday night to show their appreciation for the all NHS Workers and Carers. Last week special consideration was also given to all the other services supporting us, in particular people still working in the village.

Last night there was another additional recipient of recognition, Captain Tom. Having done his sponsored garden walk he has not only raised in excess of £32m so far for the NHS, but yesterday also marked his 100th birthday. True British spirit in action!

We were also very pleased to receive two video's showing some villagers doing their tribute. Apparently, the bugler has promised to practice for next weeks clapping! :-)

Harfield Motor Services reopens

Harfield Motor Services in Milford on Sea high street shall be opening the doors again on Monday 4th May to once again provide car repairs, maintenance services and MOTs to previous and new customers.

The team are aware that it is important for you to keep your cars on the road to enable you to get your essentials, so they have returned as soon as they could.

Social distancing is being taken very seriously, and all mechanics will be working at the recommended distance apart. 

Customers will be asked to leave your cars at the entrance with the keys in, and one of the lads will take over from there.

Pay it forward with Ray's Italian Kitchen

Ray’s Italian Kitchen has launched its “pay it forward’ crowdfunding project as a way of continuing to trade in these uncertain times.

This project will allow you to buy gift vouchers in advance, enabling Ray’s to mitigate immediate cashflow issues caused by these unprecedented times.

Stacey said: "I am just being realistic, it is becoming clear to me and I’m sure most of you, that the world is going to be a very different place in the future. None of us could have ever imagined we would be locked down in our homes etc due to a dangerous/potentially fatal virus ever in our lifetimes. I appreciate that everyone has their own journey in this, however for just 2 minutes of your time I’m reaching out to each and everyone of you to seek a pledge, not for free but for a redeemable voucher to cash in some time next year when the restaurant is back to its full operation. The reality of any restaurant opening its doors in this situation are not only slim but some would say irresponsible/reckless due to the nature of what we are dealing with.

"Every single one of you could make a difference, most of you dine at Ray’s Italian on a regular basis and I hope that you would like to continue to do so on the other side of this also. I am not asking for anyone to pledge hundreds, just £10 would be amazing and would just help to keep the wolf away so to speak if enough of you pledge. 

Please spread the word to anyone whom you think would be interested in helping Ray’s Italian Kitchen survive this crisis." 

"I would also like to thank all of you whom have supported the takeaway service I have been offering throughout this difficult time and I hope that you will continue to do so for as long as it takes. I feel blessed to live where I live and grateful that we have such a supportive community. Stay safe and thank you from the bottom of my heart."
