Freedom to Learn supported by Folk Performance

Bruce and Bob Clitherow, the brilliant Milford on Sea folk singing brothers, have decided to forgo their performance fee to help to support their favourite village charity when they entertain the audience at the Folk at The Centre on Thursday 9th March

Bruce and Bob have delighted Folk Club audiences in the past and they have been ‘bribed’ to be guest artists in March. ‘Bribed’ is perhaps too a strong a word..., but they have agreed to appear with the assurance that any monies, in lieu of a fee, will be donated to a charity close to their hearts, - that is their family’s special local charity Freedom to Learn. Run by Joey Owen.

---------------------------------------------------

More about the Freedom to Learn Charity

Freedom to Learn is a Milford on Sea based charity run by Joey Owen. The charity works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.

Freedom to Learn improves the quality of, and access to, education amongst remote communities in Nepal.

They do this by working with local children to overcome any obstacles that might prohibit them from attending school. For example, for children living in rural provinces, something as simple as a bicycle can change the course of their lives – offering them a viable way of travelling to and from school every day.

We work with the schools themselves, to help them deliver the best possible standard of education – through teacher training, international school twinning and the provision of vital educational equipment.

You can help to give a child the Freedom to Learn

There are a number of ways in which individuals or organisations can help towards giving a child the freedom to learn:
  • By giving a one-off donation of your choice.
  • As a monthly donation of any amount, at your own discretion – every pound counts!
  • As a long term commitment of £10 per month for ten years. (£1,200 for a full education)

New Island appears near Hurst Castle

A recent article by Roz Waters in the Advertiser & Times, has given sailors' a warning over submerged 'shingle island' near Hurst Castle.

Part of the article reads:

Local sailors are facing a fresh hurdle in the Solent with the emergence near Keyhaven of a shingle bank which has been dubbed “Lentune Island”.

The shingle bar, to the east side of Hurst Spit, is fully submerged at high tide and is not accurately shown on nautical charts – prompting a warning from the RNLI.

A spokesperson for the RNLI revealed that Lymington lifeboat station manager Alastair Mackay and his team have been watching the progress of the shingle bar for some time.

“We have circulated several videos taken by the crew from the sea and the shore amongst the rest of the RNLI team at Lymington and other boat users,” said the spokesperson.

“We have also passed them on to Solent coastguard to let them know what is happening.”

The rescue organisation is warning that after navigating eastwards around the shallow bar off Hurst Castle known as The Trap, sailors should be extra careful if they intend to head towards Keyhaven as the new shingle bar extends east of Hurst Spit in an area that many boaters would have previously used to turn northwards towards Keyhaven.

To read the full A&T articleplease click here.

This change has thrown up a further observation by a Keyhaven local:

"Regular visitors will be familiar with the “Lentune Island” feature as an above-high-water extension of the Spit, previously dubbed Castle Point, and still clearly visible on Google Maps satellite images.

Mysteriously, once English Heritage’s contractors had completed the replenishment of the areas on the seaward side of the castle’s east wing with shingle, Castle Point had become an island, submerged at high tide.

Visitors since the departure of the contractors may also have noted the reduction in size of the stockpile of dressed granite blocks salvaged (and numbered) from the collapsed wall of the castle’s east wing in an earlier phase of work. The attached photographs show dressed granite blocks being used to shore up the chevron timber groynes in front of the east wing before shingle replenishment."

Looking at the Past: William Ravenscroft

Local historian, Barry Jolly of Milford on Sea Historical Record Society published an article on 'William Ravenscroft: Architect' in the Hampshire Chronicle which casts a light on some historic village architecture.

During his practice in Milford on Sea, William Ravenscroft was involved with 400 or more projects including alterations and internal works, war memorials and other public buildings. Between 1898 and 1928, he designed some 120 houses in Milford on Sea.

Little by little, Milford-on-Sea developed. That it did so was essentially down to one man, an architect, William Ravenscroft.

Ravenscroft was born in humble circumstances on 21 March 1848 at 48 Minster Street, Reading.

When he was 16, Ravenscroft was articled to a local architect, working later in London, and established his own practice in Reading in 1875. His work in Reading was prodigious. Clearly, he was prospering. In 1875, Ravenscroft married Elizabeth Rose, by whom he had four children: three boys and a daughter.

He may, though, have been working too hard, for in 1898, shortly after the death of his mother and on medical advice, he travelled to Milford on Sea, providentially perhaps, to his own, and the village’s, mutual benefit.

Whether or not he had been working too hard in Reading, Ravenscroft great work in Milford on Sea can be dated from the time of his holiday in 1898. During increasingly frequent visits to Milford, he lived in Seacroft, the first house in the village he designed, close to the sea. On settling permanently in the village in 1908, it was to another house of his own design, Briantcroft, named after his mother (née Briant). This residence, still standing in Barnes Lane, has its spacious principal rooms looking over an extended garden towards the sea.

During his practice in Milford on Sea, he was involved with 400 or more projects including alterations and internal works, war memorials and other public buildings.

Ravenscroft’s contribution to the village cannot be over-stated. Between 1898 and 1928, he designed some 120 houses out of a total of about 210 new builds, and the New Milton Advertiser asserted that, ‘it was due to him almost entirely that Milford, in spite of its rapid growth, has retained its old world charm and character.’

Other work in the village included the Church Hall in Sea Road, the Women’s Institute Hall, the Keyhaven War Memorial, and extensions to Newlands (the largest property in Milford, once the home of Admiral Cornwallis). Further work in nearby Lymington, including the Masonic Hall, reflected another of his activities as a practising freemason. Over his lifetime, he won several competitions including one from RIBA and the Local Government Board in his seventieth year.

He was honorary architect for thirty years for All Saints’ Church, providing designs for the Choir Vestry, the Children’s Corner (a gift from his future wife, Alice), and the conversion of the Lady Chapel into the War Memorial Chapel. In 1933, a century after its demolition, he recreated the lay-out of Hordle Old Church.

This last indicates an interest in history, especially church history, and he was one of six founder members and first secretary of what was then called Milford-on-Sea Record Society. It is perhaps no accident that the society was founded in 1909, the year after his move to Milford on Sea. It was (as he explained in the Society’s first Occasional Magazine, ‘of a limited number of members, formed for the purposes of research and record in relation to matters of local interest, both ancient and modern.’

The society was indeed of limited numbers, being very much a club for the more affluent residents of the village, and with a committee from which ladies were excluded.

Ravenscroft’s articles, being mostly on the church and religious themes, were those of a man who was a church warden for seven years and architectural adviser to the Winchester Diocesan Advisory Committee. Their importance - and his own continuing interest - is reflected in his 1911 work on Milford church, running, uniquely, to a second edition in 1936. His wide-ranging interests extended not only to Hordle old church (the ruins of which now lie in Milford parish), but to mediaeval religious history, and to a religious prisoner in Hurst Castle (where Charles I was held prior to his execution), who died in his cell in 1729 after thirty years of incarceration.

His history of freemasonry traced the movement back, according to one obituary, to the builders of Solomon’s Temples through the mediaeval guilds of Swiss lake dwellers.

Ravenscroft, bedridden and unable to see to read or write, passed away on 2 November 1943. He would doubtless be proud to know that Ravenscroft-designed houses are much sought after today, and that Milford-on-Sea Historical Record Society is currently digitising its Occasional Magazines, including all his articles, for the benefit of future generations.

Oakhaven One Mile Sponsored Walk

On Sunday 26th March between 10am and 1pm, New Milton Sand and Ballast will host a sponsored walk at Downton Manor Farm Quarry to raise money for Oakhaven Hospice – part of a six-month fundraising challenge to raise as much money as possible for the local charity.

The 1-mile walk will take place around the picturesque lakes at Downton Quarry, and is open to all ages and abilities.

The route will follow Downton Jubilee Walk, a new footpath that opened to the public in April 2022, and will take participants around the seven new lakes on carefully restored land, allowing them to observe the natural wildlife in the area – from badgers and bumblebees to bats and several species of birds. There will also be a fun and educational wildlife activity trail for children to discover along the way.

Entries cost just £5 per person, which includes one accompanying adult for a child entering, and £2 per extra adults. Refreshments will be provided on the day.

All the funds raised from entry fees, plus individual sponsorship raised by participants, will be donated to Oakhaven Hospice, a local charity that provides essential palliative and end-of-life care to those in need.

Rob Flower, Managing Director of New Milton Sand and Ballast comments: “We are delighted to be once again opening our doors to local people at the end of March. The sponsored walk will raise important funds for a charity that is particularly close to our hearts at New Milton Sand and Ballast, as well as being so important to the community across the whole of the New Forest."

About Pressed 2 Impress

No doubt most people find washing an ironing tedious, but not Karen O'Keefe, who is the owner of a local Hordle business Pressed2Impress.

Karen explains: "I started Pressed2Impress a few years ago having moved to the New Forest from Surrey with my two children. I decided to advertise for evening ironing work in the local newspaper. Within a few weeks I had attained half dozen clients in the Lymington area, within a month I had increased that to a dozen and they just kept on coming! I realised there was really was a clear demand for a great quality, professional ironing service.

Within 6 months the word had spread and I had more and more work by recommendation. I started offering laundry services, mainly to aid our yachting and business clientel. We were then approached by Lymington boat builders and a few charter companies to help assist with private clients yachts and chartered over night stays.

Within a year our clientele had doubled in size. As far as we know, there was no one else in the area providing such a niche service combining locality with quality service and finish with a fast turnaround. As far as we know, we are the only service used for the marine industry.

Most of our work is now on recommendation we serve many professional people who demand a high standard of service.

I pride myself on maintaining a quality service which is second to none, delivering 100% perfection together with a friendly efficient and personal service."

If you fancy saving yourself some time or tedium, please contact Karen or her partner Neil.
