Cyclist Falls 100ft over Hordle Cliff and has an Extraordinary Escape

Glenn Burnage, a 68 year old local cyclist, had a amazing escape after he plunged 100ft over the cliff from the path between Hordle Cliff and Taddiford Gap

This extraordinary event happened on the afternoon of Thursday 14th March 2024.

Glenn was on a regular mountain bike ride, and as he navigated the ruts along the path towards Milford on Sea the afternoon ride nearly became a tragedy.

Within a split second, he fell from the top of the cliff, hitting the sides and very luckily landed on a muddy plateau at the bottom.

The full might of the combined emergency services were soon at the scene after he was able to make a 999 call.

Astonishingly, ex-competitive cyclist and time trialist, Glenn escaped with only cuts and bruises after the near-100ft cliff fall.

An article by Chris March in the Advertiser & Times carries the incredible full story. To read please click here.

From Melleford to Milford-on-Sea

In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village was an established Saxon settlement and known as Melleford with an estimated population of around 50 people.

For a short time, the village the became Melleford  on Sea, before settling on the current name, Milford on Sea. The origin of the name Milford is simply 'a Mill by a Ford'.

Until early last century Milford on Sea was essentially an agricultural settlement centred on the village green and the High Street.

Many tales persist of smuggling in the area, thanks to the parish’s ideal proximity to the coast and forest. The village green is all that remains of the ancient common land.

Today the village population is in the region of 5000 people.

Looking for memories of Bradley the New Forest Bear

A quest is underway to collect warm memories of Bradley the New Forest Bear.

These delightful children's books were written and illustrated by talented Milford Sea author and artist, Christine Rix.

The first book in the charming Bradley the New Forest Bear seven part book series was published in July 2004, and the series went on to follow Bradley's many fun adventures around Milford on Sea and nearby.

A new Facebook page has been set up to collect and share all of the stories and memories you may have of these books, their fabulous storylines, and Christine's original hand painted illustrations.

To add your memories or stories of Bradley, please click here.

Christine still has and cherishes the original Bradley, who was hand-made by LJ Bears in Lymington.

It would be wonderful for Christine to see all the love for the stories she created, and to also hear about the joy they once, and hopefully still do, bring to children.

About Vinegar Hill Pottery

Vinegar Hill Pottery is a small family-owned pottery, and boutique bed and breakfast, which is very much a family affair.

Dave Rogers is a master potter who runs his pottery workshop from the premises and offers tuition to aspiring ceramic artists. His wife, Lucy oversees the management and day-to-day running of this delightful three-room accommodation.

Both originate from Lymington in the New Forest. Dave spent his murky college years studying ceramics at Farnham College of Art and Design and working at Wrecclesham Pottery. He graduated in Ceramics 1997 and then started up on his own. He moved to Bristol in 1999 where he set up his own work spaces at The Botany Art Studios.

Vinegar Hill B&B Accommodation

There are no identikit rooms at Vinegar Hill. You can pick your accommodation from the spacious Garden Room, the secluded Hayloft or enjoy the delights of Rosie, a beautifully restored nineteenth century showman's wagon for a truly unique experience.

With a degree in all things Latin American from Bristol University, Lucy spent time living and studying in Latin America before settling in Bristol and working for ten years for a travel company that specialised in offbeat Latin America. Her job involved travel to small, remote and unique lodges and hotels throughout the continent. This fuelled her passion for travel and gave her the experiences and know-how of what does and doesn’t work for individual, boutique accommodation, and the grounding for Vinegar Hill accommodation.

Vinegar Hill Pottery Courses

Dave's skill as a potter is matched only by his ability as a teacher and patience with those who are new to the kinetic delights of the potter's wheel, giving you the ultimate hands-on experience.

Regular pottery courses are open to residents and non-residents alike.

To see next Pottery Courses: Please click here.

Vinegar Hill Pottery Shop & Gift Vouchers

Vinegar Hill Pottery offer Gift Vouchers to make a special present for someone you know.

Dave also sells his large range of high-fired stoneware pots, cups, plates, platters, and kitchenware.

All are all hand-made by him on his potters wheel. They are also oven proof, dishwasher proof and microwavable. He is happy to take commissions if you would like something bespoke.

You may have seen Dave's handmade basins featured on the BBC's 'The Great Pottery Throwdown'.

The high quality hand thrown ceramic basins and sinks come in a variety of styles and finishes. The Single bowl hand basins look great recessed into, or mounted on top of vanity units and washstands.

New Owner at Holland's of Milford

Holland's of Milford now has an excited new owner. This popular village centre convenience store and off licence is now owned by Punit Patel, who is also happy to be known as Nick.

The store is independently owned, and has the added benefits of being a One Stop franchise. The Holland's of Milford name will also be changed to 'One Stop Working with Milford' in the next few weeks.

The previous owner, Kularaj Pathmanathan had purchased the store from Paul & Maureen Holland in 2020, who prior to that, had run Hollands of Milford for 21 years since 1999. During this time, the store had been part of the Nisa family of independent grocers.

Punit (Nick) with his Dad, Vinu
Chatting to Nick (Punit), he told me that he and members of his family have bought a house in the village and they will be moving in very soon.

Having experience of working closely with the community in his previous shop in Andover, he now aims to become a valuable member of the Milford on Sea Community.

In the coming weeks a major refit and rebrand will be taking place and new stocks are already arriving in store.

The new stock will be priced significantly less than previously. In fact, many prices are already reduced, so it is certainly worth popping in to take a look.

There are also a lot of clearance bargains on offer right now.

Once settled in the village, Nick aims to open the store daily from 7am to 10pm.

It is expected that you will see the existing friendly Holland's of Milford team of Amy and Jackie behind the counter when you next go in to shop, along with Punit and members of his family.

Nick plans to continue to supply local produce, such as jam, homemade cakes, cheese etc., and add personal touches, such as home-made samosas. This will be alongside the extensive One Stop range of products, together with the competitive prices, and regular special offers, a large group can bring.

Their range includes all of the big brands you would expect to see elsewhere, and indeed everything you may need for your fresh local produce, delicatessen, fresh bread, wine, beer & spirits, kitchen cupboard stocks, household items for daily use and naughty treats for celebration times.

Great value ready meals and sandwich meal deals are just some if the new items you will now find in store.

A Takeaway Service for hot drinks and hot snacks is also available.

The Free Home Delivery Service provides a convenient and friendly way of doing your shopping. Anyone can use the service, you can simply place your order by telephone for later collection, or arrange a home delivery by calling: 01590 641882. Alternatively just pop in and select your own shopping and have it delivered. Delivery is free for all orders over £50.

Did you know, an Amazon Locker service is also available in store?

If you are ordering items online, and you have an option to select an Amazon Locker Pickup, this will allow you to have your parcel delivered to Holland's of Milford. You can be notified by email or SMS text when your parcel is ready to collect, and you'll have up to 7 days to collect at a time to suit you.

You can even get your lottery tickets, although winners can’t be guaranteed!

One Stop Working with Milford also have a new Facebook page where you can follow news from the store at www.facebook.com/onestopmilfordonsea.

L8R House Music Charity Night raises £274 for Olivia Inspires

Last Saturday 24th February 2024, L8R held a very successful House Music Charity Night at The Bridge

Who knew Milford on Sea could sell out a night of house music?!

The energetic evening event supported local charity Olivia Inspires, with 20% of ticket sales going to the charity. In total a donation of £274 was raised.

To watch part of the night in action, please click here.

The evening featured DJ and organiser, Keith Willsher, (formally known as Marco Polo), who played iconic house & trance records from the 1990's.

The whole event was played with original vinyl records from the era, creating a euphoric night of dancing and great house music.

During the 1990's Keith performed at some of London's top nightclubs, including having a residency at Peach in Camden Palace, Bagleys, and The Coliseum.

Tickets were £10 in advance for over 18's only, and the bar was very well supported!

-----------------------

Since the event, Keith at L8R has invested in a significantly upgraded sound rig to give a full club experience.

The new purchase will mean that he can now create a much improved sound, and he has no need to rely on sound systems in hired venues in the future.

For those that understand these things (not me!), the system includes: a 5kw sound rig, 2x 25w amps, 2x 18inch 900w sub woofers, and 4x top & mid 600w speakers. This will totally enhance the sound on music nights.

There are also plans to add exciting aromas to create a full sensory experience.

-----------------------

The next L8R Event will be in April 2024 when they will be joined by the brilliant DJ Joe Muggs who has performed at The Ministry of Sound, Leftfield and more.

Joe will be playing a mixture of breakbeat and 90s in a second room for you to dance in! - More details to follow.
