Feeling Lonely or Isolated? Meet the Befrienders

Local charity, HOPe (Helping Older People New Forest) offer a Free Befriending Service to help any older people who are troubled by loneliness at any time.

Loneliness can hit for lots of reasons, particularly at this festive time of year, with the HOPe Free Befriending Service, nobody needs to feel alone.

The team at HOPe aim to learn about your interests and experiences and then find a match with one of their volunteers, who they hope will, over time, become a good friend.

To find out more, please visit www.hopenewforest.org/befriending
or contact Georgina, to find out how they can help on 07936 495708 or befriending@hopenewforest.org.

----------------------
About HOPe

HOPe (Helping Older People New Forest) are a local charity who are dedicated to making sure that they empower older citizens so they can have the best life they can.

They do this by offering two key services, both available in Milford on Sea: Information and Advice and Befriending. These services are funded by running two shops, through very welcome donations, and the generous grant funding from a wide variety of sources.

They endeavour to keep their overheads as low as possible so that most of every pound that comes their way is ploughed back into providing valuable services.

They deliver the services through a small number of employees and a wonderful team of volunteers.

Information and Advice Service: The charity offers a free, confidential and impartial service across a wide range of subjects. If you are elderly (or you know of someone) and need some guidance about almost anything, then you only have to ask. Even if it is not in their usual area of expertise, they will be sure to point you in the right direction.

Befriending: For many years now, loneliness has been recognised as the cause of a great many mental and physical ailments. Whilst not exclusively an elderly problem, there's a greater likelihood of this happening as loved ones die, friends become less able to visit and families are hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles away.

Both services are completely free.

New Owners at Mister Pinks Fish & Chip Shop

Mister Pink's fish & chip shop in Milford on Sea has changed hands and you will now find delighted new owners, Ella and Dave behind the counter.

Ella and Dave were previously Assistant Manager and long term Chef at The Smugglers Inn just across the road, so they may already be known by several people in the village.

We hear that, the new team plan to share lots of exciting ideas as soon as they find their feet.

In addition to tasty traditional fish & chips, the latest specials menu already incudes options such as: chicken burger, onion rings, jumbo sausage, mozzarella sticks, garlic mushrooms, and jalapenos poppers.

The couple have also published their Christmas Opening Times (see below), and plan to have new opening times in the new year.

It appears that the Mister Pink's name is staying, and Ella and Dave have created an attractive new logo for their business.

Mister Pink's now also have their own Facebook page. To Like & Follow their ongoing news, please click here.

It looks like the pair are off to a good start, and we wish them well on their new adventure. We also look forward to seeing what else new will happen in 2025.

About Mister Pink's

Mister Pink's fish & chip shop was founded over 50 years ago by Malcolm 'Mac' Pink. Following Mac's retirement, his son, Steve Pink took control of running Mister Pink's until recently.

The popular takeaway was originally located in the high street towards Keyhaven before moving to its current location on Church Hill, Milford on Sea many years ago.

Mac Pink lived in retirement until the grand age of 93, before passing peacefully in January 2024.

Steve Pink has been at the heart of Mister Pinks for over 40 years, providing traditional and delicious fish & chips which have been much loved by locals and holiday makers alike.

Steve has now taken his well-earned retirement, and has handed the reigns of this long-standing and much valued village establishment on to a new generation.

Great response to Food Bank Appeal for Chocolate for Local Kids

Once again the people of Milford on Sea have shown their generosity in donating chocolate for local kids who will not have as much as other children this Christmas.

Some of the donations
made in The Village News
Following an article earlier this month, chocolate donations were collected in The Village News, which were then collected by the New Forest Basics Food Bank.

The chocolate donations are now being sent out to every child in a family that receives a food parcel, and that includes some families here in Milford on Sea.

With some extra chocolate for them to enjoy over Christmas, it is nice to know that the donations made will put a smile on the face of a less fortunate child.

Mark at The Village News wrote and told us: "I just wanted let you know that New Forest Basics Food Bank picked up the confectionery this morning. I was genuinely surprised at how much was donated in a short time.. the pictures don't it it justice!"

Thanks go to all who took the time and effort to generously donate, and to Mark who as always, was more than happy to help by collecting the donations.

The colourful life of John Davis

Last week we published an article entitled: 'Milford on Sea and the New Zealand Prime Minister' which told the story of Helen Clark, a former prime minister of New Zealand, and her husband, Milford on Sea born Peter Davis.

Bob Braid has told us more about Peter's father, and Milford on Sea resident, John Stanley Davis.

John was in Milford on Sea during WW2 and stationed with the London Scottish Regiment at Westover, (Which became Westover, and now The Beach House). During this time he met his future wife and eventual settled for the rest of his life in the village.

His life took him to many corners of the world, which he recalled in his memoirs published in his book East Wind, West Wind in 2002.

War & Romance at Westover

John recalled his time at Westover, and how he met his wife, in a document held by the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society, entitled 'War & Romance at Westover'.

War & Romance at Westover
In 1996, John writes about his Westover memories starting from August 1942 when WW2 air raids were close by, and England was expecting the Germans to make a sea invasion.

At this time, he was stationed in Westover commanding a company of the London Scottish regiment. They had been posted here to defend any invasion of the local coastline.

He also describes what the Milford on Sea sea defences looked like, how there was a practice firing range on the cliff top, and explains that all road signage had been removed.

John details who was in billeted in Westover, and how the 4 officers and 100 troops lived.

He goes on to recall the day a pretty girl visited with a message for her mother. She was dressed in a navy blue Red Cross uniform, and he discovered that she worked in the convalescent centre for wounded soldiers at Passford House just outside Lymington in the New Forest.

John went on to meet her often during his four months at Westover. She came to the dances which were held in the main hall at Westover, and joined him to watch football matches in New Milton. They played tennis at Milford Country Club and he had meals with her family in Milford on Sea.

Two years later, John was back in Milford on Sea, getting married to her in All Saints Church before settling in the village.

East Wind West Wind
Recollections and Memoirs of John Davis.
Book published in 2002.

John was Born in 1918 in Tientsin, China, one of the Treaty Ports occupied by the British for over a hundred years. The port was handed back to China in 1941.

His education was divided between Tientsin Grammar School and King's Canterbury. He started his career teaching Physical Training in Tientsin, after which he was apprenticed to the Stock Exchange in London.

He was a man who lived through the decline of the British Empire. He had been in India during Partition and the end of the Raj, and at the celebrations when Tanganyika gained independence to become Tanzania in 1963.

Having joined the Territorial Army, he was mobilised for the war in 1939 joining the London Scottish regiment. He was stationed at Westover in Milford on Sea as well as other places.

John's first post-war job was in Dunlop Tyres (India); thereafter he joined a firm of mica merchants working for them in Tanganyika and India. He returned to England in 1968 and became self-employed in Hampshire.

He then deepened his earlier study of Yoga, later becoming a British Wheel of Yoga teacher. In 1976 John was introduced to Viniyoga and he then followed this yoga tradition.

His memoirs provide an informed insight into a period of dramatic social change.

About Friends of NCF

In 2007 the founders of Friends of NCF, Steve and Liz Jennings went to Kampala. Whilst there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born.

Support started with the sponsorship of children in secondary education and then developed into fundraising for a school building. As the project continued to grow, ‘Friends’ began to finance a feeding programme to help over 400 undernourished children receive a meal during their school day.

Friends of NCF also provide a free newsletter for moral or financial supporters, and welcome anyone wishing to do a fundraising event or challenge. To find out more please contact Matthew at: office@friendsofncf.org

Milford on Sea and the New Zealand Prime Minister

An interesting article appeared in the Advertiser and Times recently, when they dived into their archives and republished a story from 25 years ago about New Zealand’s prime minister Helen Clark and her connection to Milford on Sea.

Mrs Clark married Milford on Sea born Peter Davis in 1981.

Back then, 25 years ago, she often visited the village to spend Christmas at her father-in-law, John Davis’s home.

John Davis, who was 81 at the time, had been born in China and his wife in India. During his career, he had worked for a mining company in Tanzania.

Helen Clark served as the 37th prime minister of New Zealand from 1999 to 2008.

She was New Zealand's fifth-longest-serving prime minister, and the second woman to hold that office. Read more here.

Her husband, Peter Davis was born in Milford on Sea in 1947, and moved to New Zealand in 1970 where he became a renowned sociologist and professor.

He had spent his childhood in Tanzania, where his father, John had worked in the mining industry. Peter had a great-great-grandfather who had grown up in New Zealand.

Peter studied and gained a master's degree in sociology and statistics at the London School of Economics before moving to New Zealand. Read more here
