Doctors recommend that you take your Blood Pressure at home at least every 6 months. If you haven’t got a monitor at home, The League of Friends Health Hub  have organised a special offer for you to purchase an Omron M2Basic upper arm BP monitor at £24.95 from Milford Pharmacy

The Blood Pressure programme has the support of the Milford Surgery, the Milford Pharmacy and the NHS Primary Care Network.

We hope you agree that this is an excellent way for the League of Friends Health Hub to continue supporting the health and wellbeing of everyone living in Milford on Sea.

The only way to find out is to come and have your Blood Pressure taken. They look forward to seeing you.

Milford on Sea Newcomers Evening welcome

The Milford on Sea Newcomers Exhibition & Supper was a great success last Saturday.

lyrics of
Milford on Sea
Song
Once again the long-term organiser of this popular annual event, Ruth Bufton along with her team of enthusiastic volunteers welcomed over 200 new residents to Milford on Sea and gave them all a true appreciation of the warm community they have joined.

The day's events were possible because of many helpers, cooks and washer uppers from the 4 village church congregations and village volunteers.

The evening entertainment also featured dancers from NJ Dance and music from the singers of Straight Banana.

During the evening all newcomers were given an information bag which contained details of Milford on Sea Clubs, Societies, Classes, Charities and Events to let people know what goes on in the village, as well as things that people can join in with or support.

Local HHC and New Forest District councillor, Fran Carpenter was a guest and commented online:
"A lovely lady called Ruth and her husband organise a yearly ‘village newcomers’ event for recent residents to Milford On Sea. Local organisations exhibit their activities all day, followed by a meal in the evening. I was privileged to attend yesterday and meet what must have been 200+ new residents. Wow, what a great day and evening. True community spirit. Milford even has a village song! Thank you to Ruth and all the organisers."

Ruth sends her thanks to all newcomers that came and to the many people who helped make the day such an enjoyable success.

PS: The evening had been preceded by an Exhibition in All Saints' Church where newcomers and all village residents were invited to meet and discover many activities to enjoy or join in with, such as: Milford on Sea Clubs, Societies, Classes, Charities and Events.

Walk for Wellness raises over £2000

The Walk for Wellness group have completed their collective 100 mile charity walk around Milford on Sea and surrounding areas in aid of Oakhaven Hospice.

In completing the challenge, the intrepid ladies raised over £2000.

Organiser, Melissa completed the full marathon distance in 7 & 3/4hrs with a couple of comfort breaks and a stop for a protein bar!, and most of the group did between 12 and 13 miles each. Halfway through, the ladies found time to meet for lunch in Lymington.

After completing their walks, the group met at The Needles Eye Café at 4pm for a well earned Prosecco, tea and cakes as a treat from Melissa and her husband. The Needles Eye Café proved warm hosts and even made a  generous donation to the cause.

Some people even gave money to the group on route but most was donated on the Just Giving website in addition to some generous anonymous donations.

Melissa comments: "The walk itself was lovely. A beautiful day and everyone enjoyed it - even me after that distance - although my feet are still a bit sore!"

About Walk for Wellness

Walk for Wellness was set up by Melissa Page in August 2019, she is a qualified personal trainer and ex-lawyer who has a real passion for fitness, and has completed 4 marathons and various charity challenges.

Melissa wanted to give something back to the community so she started free walking groups at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays for anyone who would like to go along.

The aim being for people to get some exercise and simultaneously have some social company.

The exercise is followed by a well-earned coffee and chat. The groups tend to cover 3 to 3.5miles in the hour but different speeds can be catered for (including jogging).  She always does a warm up to start and a stretch after.

Anyone that would like to join in can just turn up at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays outside the Needles Eye Café.

The importance of fitness is clear, and people’s reasons for walking varies, and Melissa is keen to see new members join in for fitness and fun.

To join the Walk for Wellness free walking group, or to find out more, please contact Melissa on pagetwo@hotmail.co.uk or 07712 164310.

Have you seen a lion around the village?

If so, it probably means that you have seen the poster advertising the "I am Mark" event being held at the Community Centre at 7:30 pm on Wednesday 5th October.

Action-packed with no less than 19 miracles, the book of Mark was written to be shared live with first century audiences, in one sitting. Aimed at those outside the Jewish faith, the book of Mark has the potential to capture 21st century hearts and minds like no other story.

In this dynamic new, word-for-word, solo performance, directed by Lisa Gilmour, Stefan Smart brings us the story as it was originally narrated. I am Mark is the resulting full-bodied drama, with its characters and nuances brought startlingly to life. Because it's so accessible and involving, I am Mark has the added advantage of being a great conversation opener.

So, sit back, relax, and imagine yourself among Mark's first audience, as you experience the Good News of Jesus 'as it was in the beginning', in all its urgency and power, challenge and comfort.

"Sometimes it takes a living voice... to make you hear the Bible for the first time" Archbishop Rowan Williams.

Tickets cost £7 per person from the Community Centre Box Office and have been selling fast. Tea and coffee will be served during the interval.

This showing is organised by: Christians Together in Milford on Sea and Everton.

Historic Birdlife Records of Milford (1802-2022)

Keith Metcalf’s second wildlife book; ‘The Historic Birdlife Records of Milford-on-Sea’ is on sale from 1st October. His first major book, ‘The Natural History of Milford-on-Sea’ was published in 2020 and sold-out within a year of publication.

Keith said; “This is the second book in my 4-book wildlife series with this one being devoted entirely to our local birdlife. It is an historic record covering the past 220 years”.

Keith continued; “Whilst I was researching early birding records, I noted that there was a plethora of published material going back as far as the 1800s. These historic books and magazines often contained obscure but important references to Milford’s birds.

The more I delved, the more interesting the records seemed to become. I doubted that many readers would have come across these important older books and reports so, despite the enormous amount of additional work and time this took to include, I thought it was imperative that these old, often obscure records be fully embraced and shared with everyone. It added about a year to the books writing and production, but for those with an interest in local bird history it will at least allow readers to go to a one-book source and pick out the most interesting birding information for each species recorded in our area since 1802”.

Keith went on to say; “In the 1800s I was intrigued to read about black grouse and capercaillie in the New Forest, these being raised and reintroduced by local gamekeepers. Blackcock was regarded as a ‘Royal’ bird and kept only for the King’s table. At this time it was even thought that with the spread of Scottish fir plantations in the New Forest that both black grouse and capercaillie might feel quite at home here and survive … which of course they didn’t! According to a story published in one of Colin Tubbs books, black grouse actually did survive for a time in the extreme north of the Forest until well after the 1939/45 second world war had ended.”

Keith told us that without the collaborative help from Marc Moody, Peter Hobby, the late Tony Locke and Chris Barrass (MCV & Wings) each of whom has submitted their individual records to be included in this book, the more modern birding history for Milford-on-Sea, Hurst and Keyhaven would have been so much the poorer.

Signed copies of Keith’s 400 page A4-size full-colour book are available to order online from: keithmetcalf2022@btinternet.com at a recommended retail price of £49. A free handy bookmark that gives the key to all the important nature reserve sites and the acronyms used to the older historic records is included with each order. There is also free delivery to any address in Milford-on-Sea parish (including Keyhaven, Lymore, Agarton and Downton), plus Everton, Lymington, New Milton and Barton-on-Sea. For deliveries elsewhere a £13.50 p&p charge should be added to the payment. Alternatively, books can be collected (by arrangement with Keith).

A £1 contribution for every book sold will be donated to ‘Wings’ youth group to put towards one of their visionary birding conservation projects. Online payment details will be sent upon receipt of all email orders.

Dance with The Silver Swans

Do you like to dance? Then you might like to join The Silver Swans.

These local dance lessons were started about 3 years ago by Stephanie Constantine-Smith and she now runs classes in All Saints' Church Hall Milford on Sea, including an newly introduced additional class.

The Royal Academy of Dance Silver Swans ballet classes are specially designed for older learners. Silver Swans will help improve your mobility, posture, co-ordination and energy levels.

These ballet classes have been specifically designed for the over-55s, but any adult is welcome to join, whatever their age.

Research shows that 75% of the factors affecting quality of life and longevity are related to lifestyle, while only 25% are hereditary. This means that there’s no excuse for not getting more active whatever your age. And dance in particular, can play a vital role in ensuring a longer and better quality of life.

Research also often puts dance ahead of other physical activities in the variety of health benefits that it brings. Ballet and dance are also very social activities and Silver Swans classes can be great places to meet new people with a passion and joy for life.

Silver Swans meet on:
  • Thursdays 10.45-11.45am - All Saints Church Hall, Milford on Sea. *New class
  • Mondays 12.00-1.00pm – All Saints Church Hall, Milford on Sea
Term time only.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth ll

As The Queen lays in state and the country mourns, tributes ring out from around the world.

Everyone will have their own memories of her majesty, and their own thoughts towards her passing, personally she has my upmost respect, - and it is sad that someone who has been there for my entire life, and led by example, is now missing. She made so many of us proud to be British.

It was only in June this year that the country celebrated her Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of unwavering service. It seems appropriate to once again share the 'Queens Platinum Jubilee Photo Album' featuring the community of Milford on Sea celebrating this very special occasion.
