Lifeboat rescue in Keyhaven Harbour

The RNLI Lymington Lifeboat, along with the Coastguard and Ambulance Service made a dramatic rescue of stricken sailors in difficult sea and wind conditions at Keyhaven Harbour on Monday evening.

The full report from the lifeboat team can be read below:

----------------------

Multi agency rescue of two people in difficulty near Keyhaven.

Last night (21st Feb) the Lymington crew were arriving at the station for their weekly training session when their pagers went off.

The station's Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat B-882 David Bradley launched under the helm of Phil and within 3 minutes of the pagers going off. The weather was settling after storm Franklin, but there was a strong SW F5 wind.

Initial reports said one person had been in the water and two people were separated in two different craft. The lifeboat exited the Lymington River using a safe speed due to the lack of visibility and made their way to the Eastern entrance of Hawker’s Lake.

Due to the low tide the lifeboat could not get close to the entrance of the eastern approach. The crew decided to illuminate the area in order to locate the casualty, using a white parachute flare but were unsuccessful.

They then proceeded to the entrance of Keyhaven River and proceeded to the Western approach of Hawker’s Lake where again the crew illuminated the area using a white parachute flare ,which helped the Coast Guard mud rescue team locate the casualty.

The lifeboat then proceeded to the quay area where they located the second casualty that was keeping out of the wind in a Shetland dinghy. The casualty had been immersed in water and was getting very cold, so from a distance of 100 m the crew monitored their condition until the mud rescue team were able to reach them.

Mud rescue teams from Lymington and Hillhead Coastguard both deployed to the two separate casualties and got them safely into the care of the ambulance service. The lifeboat was then stood down and return to station.

Helm Phil said “It was great to see all the rescue agencies work together so well.  It is also really important to ensure you have a means to call the Coastguard if you are in difficulty.  The water temperature is also really cold at this time of year and its important to ensure you have appropriate clothing.  It was also the first rescue for crew member Luke.”

Crew. Phil, Dave, James, Luke.

Thanks of all you do guys!

Storm Eunice hits Milford on Sea

On Monday 14th February 2022, Storm Eunice caused havoc across the village bringing back memories of the previous Valentine's Day Storm in 2014.

This time, Hurst Spit again had large chucks of shingle disappear, fences and trees came down, and the wooden beach huts at Hordle Cliff took an extreme battering.

The wind was so strong that a gust of 122mph was measured at The Needles on the Isle of Wight setting a new record for England.

Survey Responses from Magical Milford at Christmas 2021

The organisers of Magical Milford at Christmas 2021, Tracey & Diana have now completed the results from the survey and share the outcome below:

We would like to thank all those who completed the annual survey. The feedback is very useful and provides ideas and thoughts when planning the vision for this year.

The majority of people loved Christmas 2021. The lights, the larger trees, the increased nativity scene and of course, the lit lime tree. One person commented on the use of the word “Magical.” saying there simply wasn’t a more appropriate word.

Many of the other decorations were mentioned too, but it was the green, that stole the show in 2021.

The trader’s trees and lack of lights were highlighted as an area needing improvement. Therefore, we are currently exploring other means of lighting these small trees, to try and create a more unified and bright effect.

In 2021 we decided not to ask the children to decorate the trees. In previous years we have endured bad weather including high winds. We were picking up broken decorations every day, this was heartbreaking when the children had spent so much time making them.

Some people commented on the lack of lights and decorations on the outer fringe of the village. Whilst it would be fabulous to light all the way to The Britannia Thai and down the Keyhaven Road, it simply isn’t viable, especially when you consider the costs involved.

Another area mentioned was the standard of the audio system at Carols on the Green. Nobody expected the large number of people to arrive that evening. Around 1500 people attended and the system couldn’t cope. We are now discussing what can be done to improve the situation, but feel we need to remember it’s a village event and not a music festival at Christmas!

The cost for last year was approximately £9,000 and this was raised through sponsorship, local councils, associations, and individual donations. This year, we hope to spend less, however as our focus is now on the trader’s trees, who knows!

Overall, everybody felt this was the ‘best ever’ that Milford has experienced. The green was enjoyed by so many people; young and old, whether it was the trees, the lights, the nativity scene, or the reindeer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

About Friends of NCF (Namuwongo Community Foundation) is a Milford on Sea based charity run by long-term village residents, Matthew & Nicola Brearley. Many in the village will know Nicola, as she was a teacher at the village school for 25 years & is now back again helping out in these Covid times.

The Friends of NCF fundraising goes towards village education of orphans, widows, and the disadvantaged, looking to break the cycle of poverty for some of the most vulnerable in the slums.

Friends of NCF was originally founded as 'Ray of Hope' in 2007 by Steve and Liz Jennings. This occurred after they visited Kampala where there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born. This work now continues through Matthew & Nicola and their supporters in the village.

The Friends of NCF supports the project has a primary school, a secondary, student sponsorship in vocational & university education, a medical centre, a social care programme, micro-business programme for vulnerable women, a feeding programme, and more.

Village Scouts & Cubs on verge of closing

Group Scout Leader, Lee Snook has made a final appeal for helpers for the Beavers, Cubs & Scouts. (Please see Lee’s letter is below.)

A number of appeals have been made over past months with little success, and it has now reached a stage where is it becoming increasing possible that this excellent grounding opportunity for our young people may be taken away from them. That would be sad to see, as anyone who was in the scouting movement in our younger years would agree.

If you, or anyone you know can help please contact: Lee Snook at:

Dear all,

As you are aware our group is in immediate danger of closing as we have no Beaver or Scout leaders and Cubs are just getting by with the help of a few parents.

We really need your help to keep the group alive. We have an amazing hut in a fantastic location, an abundance of camping equipment, kayaks and sailing boats.

With the country getting back to some sort of normality there will soon be district and county events taking place, camps, mud runs, swimming galas, junk wars to name a few.

All we need to enable our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to enjoy and learn from these events is you.

Please step forward and help our group get back on it feet and let your kids benefit from the variety of different activities that scouting can offer.

All training is free and is mainly done through online learning.

Each section could do with 3 or 4 parents, careers or other family members to share the role of joint leaders.

Support is here to get you started.

So please have a think about what you can offer to Milford and Keyhaven scout group and your children.

Please email with offers of help, questions or anything else you would like to know. (Click here)

Yours in Scouting,

Lee Snook

First Friday Lunch for Milford Girls Cricket Club

The Milford Girls Cricket Club are organising the First Friday Lunch at Milford on Sea Community Centre on Friday 4th March.

Lunch will be Cottage Pie followed by Apple Crumble for just £6 and all are welcome.

Parents and the coaches of the Club will be running the lunch to raise vital funds to further grow the already popular Club.

There is also an opportunity for local people or businesses to contribute to their fundraising in other ways.

Since its early days during the first Lockdown when the girls learnt the highly technical game via home-made videos, the Club has thrived and is now a highlight of many Milford schoolgirls summer, with regular after school training, twice weekly holiday sessions and as many matches as possible! The girls’ hard work and love of the sport has been justly rewarded with nine of them being recently selected for Hampshire District Teams across three age groups.

Thanks to Parish Council and Milford Cricket Club funding the club have recently installed an all-weather pitch at Barnes Lane Recreation Centre (where the girls train) which will further enhance, improve and prolong the training and matches.

They are now fundraising for a set of spring back stumps to use on the new pitch, specialist ball catching kit and more bats and balls to replenish their stock as the numbers at the club grow.

If any local people or businesses would like to supply ingredients or donate a Raffle Prize for the lunch it would be greatly appreciated by the coaches and the girls.

The club will, of course, be happy to advertise your business during the course of the lunch.

Please contact Kerry Wills by clicking here.
