Rob & Nick Win Classic Offshore Powerboat Race

The local powerboat racing team of Rob Lister & Nick Crouch won their Honda Four Stroke class in Sunday's Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race, they were also 3rd overall in all classes.

The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes is a spectacular British Powerboat Racing Club race and one of the biggest events in the powerboating calendar. Over 30 teams, including boats and drivers from the UK, America, Germany and Italy competed in this exhilarating run to the Dorset coast and back.

The 200-mile Cowes Torquay Cowes race has long been recognised as one of powerboating’s toughest challenges, and comparisons have been made with motorsport events such as Le Mans and the Indy 500.

The race crosses Christchurch Bay and provided great entertainment for those watching from Milford on Sea beach.

In December 2018, Rob Lister and Nick Crouch were crowned UKOPRA Offshore Class 3 British champions.

Perry McCarthy, aka BBC Top Gear’s 'Stig', presented the Class 3 trophy at the Royal Southern Yacht Club.

Rob and Nick started the season well, excelling in rough conditions at Falmouth. Then disaster struck when whilst leading at Poole they were forced to retire due to propeller failure. Finally, a crucial win in rough conditions at Cowes Torquay/Poole Race earned them the British Class 3 title.

They also won the Tim Powell Trophy for “most outstanding performance”.

Dolphins spotted from Milford on Sea Beach

Last week a pair of dolphins were spotted playing offshore from Milford on Sea beach.

Many people were able to watch the dolphins from Milford on Sea beach which can only have brightened anyone's day.

The photo below perfectly captures them frolicking close to The Needles. Sadly, we don't know who captured this great image, but if someone knows, please tell us and we will be more than happy to give them a credit.

Milford Girls Cricket continues to thrive

Milford Girls Cricket, which started with homemade videos during the first Lockdown last year, has grown from strength to strength and was celebrated with an end of season Grand Finale event at Barnes Lane Recreation Ground last Friday.

The 21 Milford schoolgirls split into their two usual training teams – the Heys and the Hoes (named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, the former English Women’s Captain) and played an exciting 20 over match, loudly cheered on by friends and family.

The match went to the wire with a narrow win for the Heys and was followed by an Awards ceremony and BBQ, organised by the parents.

The Milford girls have achieved much in the last 16 months. From complete novices, nine have played District Cricket, with two featuring in the U11 Hampshire Girls squad. Five Y4 Milford schoolgirls were crowned Hampshire U9 Champions a couple of weeks ago and earlier in the summer eight of the U11s became Hampshire Champions or Runners-up in both softball and hardball.

Support Magical Milford at Christmas

No one wants to wish away the summer or even start thinking about what might be happening in four months’ time, but Autumn is fast approaching and Diana Brushwood and Tracy Haupt are already busy planning this year’s Christmas display on the village green.

Survey results received from the local community have once again requested more lights and trees to be added to last year’s event, making it even brighter and more festive.

The substantial plans for this year will hopefully bring lots of well needed cheer to our lovely village after a difficult 18 months of Covid restrictions.

The downside to this is the cost of the additional commercial grade lights, the extra Christmas trees and the professional installation of all the lighting displays.

The ladies are looking to raise £8,000 from local businesses and individuals to pay for this.

Obviously, all these extra items will be in addition to all the commercial grade lights which have been purchased over the last couple of years.

There are two different ways to get involved…

If you are a local business the packages range from £100 to £2,200 for full sponsorship of the ‘Winter Wonderland’ area on the village green. The earlier a business comes on board the more promotion they will receive.

If you would like to know more about the sponsorship packages available, then please get in touch with Lynn by clicking here for further information.

The second way to be involved is for individuals to donate via The Charity Aid Foundation for Magical Milford at Christmas, through Milford on Sea Charitable Trust.

To find out more; please click here and type in Milford on Sea Charitable Trust. When donating please type Christmas in the special message box, this ensures the money goes into the correct account.

Many people have been unable to enjoy their holidays/cruises abroad over the last eighteen months could you spare some of that saved cash for the village Christmas event please?

Stunning Full Moon at Hurst Lighthouse

Graham Wiffen has yet again caught a stunning scene in a photograph. This time it is of the full moon (August Sturgeon) on the 22nd August rising over Hurst Lighthouse with the hills of the Isle of Wight in the background. The moon glows a deep orange colour due to the sun shining through the Earth's atmosphere.

Graham's image was show on TV's South Today and also appeared in other media, which of course it thoroughly deserves to!

Art Exhibition in the Keyhaven Scout Hut

The annual Art Exhibition in the Keyhaven Scout Hut is now open every day 10am to 4pm until the last day on Bank Monday 30th August(The Scout Hut is in the car park opposite The Gun Inn pub).

It is probably no surprise that the natural beauty of the Milford on Sea coastline and surrounding countryside creates inspiration for many local artists. The exhibition is Free Entry with refreshments available in aid of Keyhaven Sea Scouts.

The event features local artists;
Shaun Stevens a well-known local scene artist, Wood Turner, Graham Turner who also does Pyrography workshops, Sue Page who makes individual items of jewellery and sells gem stones, crystals etc., and Tessa van Hasselt who specialises in and sells her oil paintings and cards.

Stunning Milford on Sea Calendar launched

Local retired semi-professional photographer, Graham Wiffen who is well known for taking stunning pictures of the beauty around the village has launched a calendar for 2022.

As Graham explains:

"I am happy to announce that I have launched my 2022 Calendar and it is available to pre-order.

After a number of you asked me last year to do one, this is my first calendar, so am offering this in limited numbers but I will be making a donation to Oakhaven Hospice from any profits generated from the sale.

The calendar includes a range of images from across the local area of the New Forest National Park.

It includes a few of my own favourites and hopefully some of yours too but mostly includes those which you have shown interest in through social media over the past year. I trust you will enjoy looking at it hanging on your wall.

Since the start of the pandemic I have been posting regularly to try and bring something positive into your lives, especially for those who have been isolating or spending much more time at home. My aim was to bring a smile, some colour or simply some joy into all our lives over the past 18 months or so. Thank you to each and every one of you who have liked/commented/shared my images and especially to those who have expressed thanks for the pictures and how they have helped you in this difficult time. I hope the calendar will do the same over the next 12 months when you look at the images.

The calendar is professionally printed on high quality card and provided with a gloss finish, so will look great hanging up at home. It is spiral bound across the centre fold, with an A4 landscape glossy photo above and an A4 landscape month-to-a-view calendar page below. The page also includes some background information on each shot.

The calendar is now available for pre-order and should be ready to ship in September. The cost is £9 plus p&p and at the moment I am only offer shipping to the U.K. If you would like International shipping, then please drop me a message and we can work something out.

I hate to mention this but Christmas is on the way and they will make great stocking fillers or just simply presents for friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your interest."

Beach Shingle Washed Away

Only a few weeks ago many tonnes of shingle were added to Milford on Sea Beach, sadly nearly all of it has washed away following some strong tides.

It is thought that the lost shingle is washed towards Hurst Spit or settles on the groynes. so that it continues to have a purpose.

Photos by Penny Arton

This perennial problem continues as our local authority tries to fight nature and the never-ending power of the sea. It is of course important that the sea wall is protected to prevent the wall's foundations from washing away and a collapse occurring as it did less than ten years ago.

This immense challenge is faced by much of the UK coastline and whilst the action taken may appear a waste of time and money, it is clear that many highly qualified experts are trying to address the problem and find the right solution.

Ultimately it should be reassuring to know that New Forest District Council are doing what they think is best with the resources they have available, as if the sea was left to do its worst the consequences for Milford on Sea could be devastating.

NFDC are working with BCP Council to ask local people to get involved in the development of a new strategy. The strategy will guide how the risk of flooding and erosion along the frontage of Christchurch Bay, from Hengistbury Head Long Groyne to Hurst Spit, encompassing Christchurch Harbour, will be sustainably managed for the next 100 years.
