Eddie Beach on Chelsea FC bench

Local young professional footballer, and former Milford Youth FC player, Eddie Beach has made another step on his journey to become a Premiership player.

On Friday 25th August 2023, Eddie was named as Chelsea FC's substitute goalkeeper for the Premiership match against Luton Town.

Whilst Eddie did not play, being part of the Chelsea first team squad is another significant development in his hopefully long and successful career.

Unlike outfield players, who can come off the bench to potentially play in a few different positions, there is only one goalkeeper. So, unless chosen to start the match, opportunities to play only really occur when there is an injury or sending off.

Fingers crossed Eddie get his chance to start a match for Chelsea in the not too distant future, however at just 19 years of age, he still has plenty of time on his side.

About Eddie Beach

Milford on Sea raised Eddie Beach was born on 9th October 2003, and he is a goalkeeper who signed professional terms with Chelsea FC from Southampton FC in June 2022.

Eddie first played football for Milford Youth FC, and his career has impressively developed from there.

He has also been capped at youth and under 21 level by Wales.

On joining Chelsea in 2022, Eddie trained regularly with the Chelsea first-team goalkeepers and was involved in seven first-team matchday squads.

In order to gain matchday experience, in January 2023 he was then loaned to Chelmsford City FC in the National League where he made 21 first team appearances. During his loan period, Eddie continued to train with the Chelsea senior team during the week.

On his return to Chelsea for the 2023-24 season, Eddie was rewarded with the No.50 squad number, and on Friday 25th August 2023 he was on the substitutes bench for the Premiership match against Luton Town.

A really open and honest article was published in 'football.london' in February 2023, where Eddie gives a frank interview on his journey from Sunday league football, both outfield, as well as between the posts.

Milford on Sea Famous Footballers

Milford on Sea has also has had some other famous professional footballers as village residents in the past:

David Peach: (born 21 January 1951) is a former professional footballer, who played at left back for Southampton FC. He was also in the FA Cup Final winning Southampton FC side in 1976.

Michael Keeping: Southampton FC and Fulham FC professional footballer in the 1920/30's. He went on to manage the giant Real Madrid from January 1948 to October 1950.

Fred Keeping: Father to Michael above, was not a footballer, but he did win an Olympic silver medal in the 12 hour cycling race. He also founded Fred Keeping & Sons, a business selling & servicing cars and bicycles.

The building still exists, and still trades servicing cars in Milford on Sea village centre. Now known as 'The Garage', it harks back to the days when the big sign above Fred's door simply read 'Garage'.

About Total Voice Choir

Total Voice started from an idea for a community choir by Christine Mulgrew in 2010.

At the time she was studying for a degree in music performance and technology, and wondered if there was any appetite for singing in Milford on Sea, where she lives. To find out, she decided to start a choir that would learn and perform rock and pop songs, and would be open to all.

The first rehearsal took place the Milford on Sea Guide Hut in January 2010. The weather was absolutely dreadful, with thick ice on all the roads. Only seven people made it to the venue that night, but the following week, after a thaw, the numbers began to climb.

Today the Total Voice Choir is at the heart of community singing in Milford on Sea. From local events, concerts to festivals, flash mobs and pub singalongs, you name it they’ve done it and had lots of fun and made lots of memories along the way! They even carried on through lockdown on Zoom, twinning online with choirs all over the world whilst keeping everybody’s spirits up and having fun.

The choir has a reputation for its well-known tunes, relaxed style and boundless enthusiasm.

The Total Voice Choir meet weekly Thursdays from 11.15am to 1pm (during term time) at The Bridge in Milford on Sea. New members are always welcome.

They are a friendly group and love having fun, singing and socialising. It's a great way to unwind and meet new friends.

Everyone is welcome with no audition required.

Lazy Lion Random Wall Mystery Resolved

It seems our recent articles about the Random Wall beside The Lazy Lion has surprisingly, taken us to the actual answer, and a connection to our Benchmark articles.

We have been contacted by John Fooks, a resident of the village for over 80 years, who during this time lived in the cottage next to The Red Lion. He now lives elsewhere in the village.

John has given us this interesting insight to why the ‘Random Wall beside The Lazy Lion’ exists.

He explains: Before I was born in 1941, my old mum worked in Dolly’s Sweet Shop before it was converted into a cottage. She also previously worked at the Dairy, which is now the Coop.

In my early years, I spent a lot of time at Rookcliff where my grandparents lived. In 1989, my wife and I moved from Everton Road, Hordle into No.34 High Street, Milford on Sea – the cottage and former Dolly’s Sweet Shop next to The Red Lion. From memory of our old deeds, the strip which had once been occupied by the old shop frontage remained within the curtilage of the two cottages. (No.34/36)

With The Red Lion public bar having been just the other side of the old shop’s party wall, and with the former door to the pub’s old public bar just beyond the wall in question, it made an excellent deflector for the occasional loud and well-oiled leavers from the hostelry.

It also provided an excellent block against the enthusiastic cyclists who travelled head-down along the narrow pavement, and threatened the unwary children and residents as they as they stepped out from their front doors or the shops.

Surprisingly, John is also connected to two other recently published articles: 'Mystery Symbol on the Lazy Lion Wall', and 'More Benchmarks around Milford on Sea Village'.

In his professional career, John was a land surveyor. He actually used the Benchmarks on the Red Lion, in conjunction with those on All Saints' Church and the village school for local engineering and building projects. The object was to ensure his instrument observations and mental maths agreed within 10mm of their differing values.

John Fooks' Great Grandfather
Edward Rogers, Keyhaven Coastguard
with John's Grandmother
As an aside, John's association with the village goes back a long way, and he has provided us of this historic photo of Edward Rogers, his great grandfather who was coastguard at Keyhaven, together with the little girl in the forefront who was his grandmother.

Funny how a simple observation of a random wall has taken us in so many interesting directions!

Discovering the Tony Locke Orchard

Did you know that in 2013 work commenced on creating a Community Orchard in Milford on Sea?, and that in 2022 the orchard was renamed to the Tony Locke Orchard.

The orchard was created for local people to enjoy and benefit from, and to provide a habitat for insects, such as bumblebees and butterflies.

As most of the trees have only been planted in the last few years, there are only a couple of mature trees that produce apples. However, in coming years it is hoped the fruit crop will grow substantially and then the Parish Council will then decide how to distribute them fairly.

The Orchard is accessed from the entrance to Studland Common Nature Reserve from junction of Pless Road and Westminster Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0WT

If you decide to visit the orchard, please be mindful that it sits at the bottom of people’s gardens.

-------------------------

About the Tony Lock Orchard

Work on the Milford on Sea Community Orchard began in 2013, after the Parish Council was able to recover old garden extensions from a number of homes in Pless Road.

The orchard was first planted in 2014 and has about 35 to 40 fruit trees and shrubs. Varieties include apple, crab apple, damson, pear, plum, cherry and blackberry. It is also an ideal area for bumblebees and butterflies. The Orchard is on occasions, partially grazed by friendly Dexter cattle with a little extra help from flailing and mowing.

Since 2016 regular surveys have recorded 27 different species of butterfly in the orchard and neighbouring common, including the beautiful Marbled White variety as well as Gamekeepers and Holly Blue’s.

Tony Locke
Tony Locke was local passionate environmentalist who dedicated his time to conservation work at the orchard, Studland Common, Sturt Pond and the Pleasure Grounds. He was also the longstanding chair of Milford Conservation Volunteers.

In 2020 Tony and fellow MCV members were honoured to receive the country’s highest accolade for a voluntary group, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, equivalent to an MBE.

Sadly, Tony passed away at the age of 79 in 2021.

In 2022, the Parish Council decided it would be a fitting tribute to rename the orchard to the Tony Lock Orchard in his honour.

His longstanding friend and MCV conservation officer Keith Metcalf recalled: “Tony was a lovely man who cared about the conservation and wildlife very much. This is a place he loved so it’s a lovely way to remember him and all that he did.”

“Under Tony’s direction, MCV secured parish council support for many local conservation projects including the Studland Common grazing scheme, successive Pleasure Grounds woodland management plans, the Sturt Pond bird hide, the development of Old Milford Meadow, Studland Community Orchard, the Pans wetland bird observatory and more recently the Rowan Tree Copse and Wildflower Meadow in Swallow Drive.

The parish council have also installed a new bench and planted a fruit tree as a further memorial to Tony.

New Beginnings Art Exhibition by Annie Sofiano

Strawberry Gallery are hosting the New Beginnings Art Exhibition by Annie Sofiano on Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd September 2023 - 10am to 5pm.

Annie's abstract art on canvas and fabric cushions will be on display to buy, or simply visit to enjoy.

About Annie Sofiano in her own words:

As a mature student studying for my BA Art History degree, I rediscovered the New York Abstract Expressionist movement and I was hooked!

I relate to the vibrancy, the innovative approach and the ground-breaking works of these artists.

These works have influenced my style of painting – colourful splashes that have many interpretations – for me they convey joy, lightness and hope – energies that may be experienced by the viewer.

My background is in interior design, working with beautiful fabrics and creating exciting colour schemes for clients.

In complete contrast my partner and I moved to Mallorca to start a small country house Bed and Breakfast. While caring for the needs of happy holiday makers I still found time to paint, gaining inspiration from the light and beauty of the Mallorca countryside and coast. The hotel also gave me the opportunity to showcase my work and the guests loved it!

We had a great time there, but after 18 years we felt it was time to return to the UK and settled in Hordle, near Milford on Sea in 2021.

As well as painting canvases, I also designed and painted the scenery for the Village Pantomime in 2023 and I am looking forward to doing next years' scenery backdrops.

At last I feel that I have the time to devote to my art, exploring and developing new ideas.

I am happy to accept commissions. Just give me an idea of colours and we can go from there.

New Signage in Saltgrass Lane

An eagle-eyed reader has sent the photo below, showing metal poles that have recently appeared along the roadside edge of Saltgrass Lane in Milford on Sea, near Hurst Spit.

As this lane is frequently used by camper vans, and often for overnight stays during good weather months, it is likely the posts will be receiving some parking restrictions signs in the not too distant future.

This could of course be an incorrect assumption, and the signs may read; 'Beware of the Ducks', or perhaps; 'No Naked Bathing!'.

No doubt we will know soon.

Newlands Manor restored to former glory

A recent article in the Daily Mail has reported that an impressive semi-detached section of the Grade II listed Newlands Manor is for sale for a princely sum of £3m.

The article explains that Newlands Manor, which until recently had been private flats, has now been fully restored to its former glory.

The grand gothic manor house was once the home of William Cornwallis-West and his flamboyant wife Patsy, who had been a mistress of Edward VII when he was Prince of Wales. They were known to have hosted lavish parties attended by Kaiser Wilhelm II and many other members of the aristocracy during 19th century.

The property was built in the early 1800's for Admiral William Cornwallis, naval captain and friend of Lord Nelson. The manor house is constructed in the Strawberry Hill Gothic architecture style, with buttresses and a castellated parapet.

The semi-detached house has over 8,400sq.ft of accommodation over three floors, which has sumptuous rooms; including a large kitchen/dining room, library, drawing room, dining room, cinema room, games room, eight bedrooms and five bathrooms.

The property is in the village of Everton, close to Milford on Sea. The house sits at the end of a a long driveway with an ornamental water fountain, and set in an estate of 3.5 acres with private gardens, a swimming pool, an ornamental lake, surrounded by woodland and parkland.
