About The Milford Folk Club

Milford Folk Club was established in 2007 – more or less with a wing and a prayer. The organiser hadn’t been inside a folk club since the smoky, dingy, hand over ear sessions of the 1960s but had always loved traditional music, both folk and blues.

So, it was with these 60s type back room of pubs / clubs that she remembered and therefore set about running the new Milford Folk Club along the same lines.

We couldn’t replicate the smoky, dingy atmosphere but we did have converted portakabins and beer!

So much support was enjoyed from other clubs, although at that time there were few outlets for acoustic music – not so thirteen years on.

Milford Folk Club was so fortunate to attract the Goodthyme Brothers, Jim Palmer and Bill Hesp.

Bill has stayed the course and is now our regular host and all time walking encyclopedia of folk knowledge: he knows who wrote and recorded everything.

Bill organises the evenings – usually a couple of songs from him, welcome floor singers and guest singer.

In 2010 the folk club moved into the new Community Centre in Milford on Sea – quite posh, really.

The club meets on the second Thursday of each month and still usually follows the format of host, floor singers and guests.

We try to keep the entrance price down to £4.50 although occasionally have to charge a little more if we brave it and book expensive guests.

The folk club is also very pleased to organise the occasional special evening in partnership with Lymington Folk & Blues Club.

Our room has a stage, brilliant lighting and sound systems if needed and we are always keen to listen to all sorts of music. One exciting ‘spin off’ is the regular Blues evenings organised by Bob Long.

The acoustic/traditional scene locally seems to be thriving and, despite many other venues now operating locally, Milford Folk Club often attracts an audience of around 60 or more.

Our guests always say what a great venue it is, what great audiences Milford provides – and we would add how lucky we are to have so much local talent who come along, support the club by singing a few numbers and of course how lucky we are to have a great venue and a great audience.

Local History Lives!

Let your fingers find your family history in and around Milford-on-Sea.

Do you ever wonder how long your family have lived in Milford? And where did Great-Grandad come from as you know he wasn’t born in Milford? And whatever happened to Granny’s sister?

Milford-on-Sea Historical Record Society [MOSHRS] is starting a major project called “Local History Lives” which may help you find the answers to these and other questions about your family’s history.

The project has been made possible through grants from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hampshire Archives Trust, Hampshire County Council, Milford-on-Sea Parish Council as well as a contribution from MOSHRS. It is also supported by volunteers from MOSHRS and Milton Heritage Society and if you are interested in helping, please make contact through our website at www.milfordhistory.org.uk.

Three new local history search tools will be launched on the MOSHRS website over the next twelve months. The Research Library, Names Directory and Parish Registers will serve the local history needs of family historians as well as the curious.

If you want to find out what Milford was like a hundred or two hundred years ago, then you will be able to dip into our Research Library. You may find your family or your house among the 150 research articles published by MOSHRS. Each article will be available in a word searchable pdf file and the text may be readily converted into a speech file.

Looking for a particular house or family? A good place to start will be our Names Directory which will search through over 75,000 local records. Successful searches will provide source references for you to investigate more deeply. The directory will draw on many historical records relevant to Milford including parish registers, census records, churchyard burial records, parish rate books, and taxation records going back to 1327.

If you are searching for some really old ancestors, then you will be able to explore our Parish Registers which first started in 1594. The registers of the ancient parish of Milford include the baptisms, marriages and burials of Milford, Hordle, Milton and Pennington, so they cover a very wide area from Highcliff in the west to Priestlands in the east, and from Holmsley and Wootton Bridge in the New Forest, and south to the sea. Our records continue until 1837 when life events were registered centrally.

Milford-on-Sea Historical Record Society will announce the launch of each search tool as it becomes available so keep a look-out. Over time we shall add more articles and records so if your ancestors don’t turn up immediately, try again later. Workshops and talks will be held to promote the use of the new search tools and we intend to make a training video available with each.

The Hampshire Archives Trust says; “This far-sighted and ambitious project looks to make research material widely available and in a form that suits the needs of users.”

Chris Hobby, chairman of MOSHRS says; “Whether you come from an old village family, are new to the area or are viewing from afar, you will be able to use these search tools to investigate your family history and to learn something of Milford’s rich history."

Nick Saunders, chairman of Milton Heritage Society says; “The three new research tools that will be made available through the Local History Lives project will be an invaluable resource for local historians. They will help us to gain a better understanding of those who lived in our area and enable us to examine the social history in our villages."
