Village Eco House and Garden Open Day on Sunday

A local couple are opening the doors of their environmentally friendly home at 22 Shorefield Way, Milford On Sea, SO41 0RX on Sunday 2nd July from 2pm to 5pm.

In July 2020, owners Nigel and Jenny McArthur, in the home previously owned by Nigel's parents for the past 35 years, received planning permission to replace the existing 1930's built bungalow and outbuildings on the plot. From there they embarked on building an environmentally friendly new house and garden office for themselves.

22 Shorefield Way today
Everyone is invited to come to see the finished house, and to chat with Nigel and Jenny about their ambitious and successful eco-house building project.

The house was designed by: AchitExe, architectural designers,  and the gardens designed by talented local garden designer, Lawrence Roberts of Elements Garden Design who are based in Keyhaven.

The builder was ‘New Forest Lofts’, who did a great job and have a wide portfolio of building services.

Nigel & Jenny McArthur explain:

Our home was built in 2021, largely by local companies who were excellent. The construction is traditional brick and block walls, the architecture follows a Danish themed open plan bespoke design and layout which we developed to maximise the space for us to live as a couple, but with accommodation for family to visit.

The design adopts the ‘Passivehaus’ principles for internal comfort and energy efficiency in use, this is an international design standard for homes to be near zero energy, utilising enhanced insulation, managed solar gain and high air tightness - balanced by mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Our home also includes triple glazing, PV’s, an Air Source Heat Pump and battery storage.

We are 100% electric, enjoy abundant hot water and have all rooms set at 21 degrees throughout the winter. We were anticipating low bills, but in our first full year the house actually made us an energy profit!

Our modest garden space and studio has been designed to be in harmony with the home; it is slowly becoming established, whilst also recovering from last summer’s extreme heat!

At a time of higher energy prices we are fortunate to have been able to invest in higher standards than building regulations require, we believe net zero energy should be the requirement for all new homes.

To support the Friends of NCF charity we are pleased to show others how a zero energy home can work in practice.

Visits are free, and any donations to the Friends of NCF would be gratefully received.

Tricky Problem for the Milford on Sea Music Festival

1st July 2023: UPDATE to original article below: The Milford on Sea Music Festival organisers have had confirmation from the Highways Department at Hampshire County Council that the 8ft post that would be obstructing the main stage will be removed by 19th July.

Thanks go to everyone who helped out by contacting HCC, and to the council themselves for taking action to resolve the issue. Now, everyone can have a great music festival in just a few weeks' time.

-------------------------------

The Milford on Sea Music Festival has run into a tricky, and potentially significant problem, - and as yet, Hampshire County Council are not helping them to resolve it. Hopefully, they will when they understand the full issue.

Since our last music festival, Hampshire County Council appear to have installed an 8ft metal post with a parking information sign at the foot of Milford on Sea village green. This is now situated just where the main stage for the Milford Music Festival is planned to be.

When Paul White, one of the organisers of the Milford Music Festival realised the issue, he contacted Hampshire County Council to ask if it could be replaced with a removable post.

He also pointed out that the bollards in front of the parking spaces in the same area, are removable once the padlocks are unsecured. It is assumed that when the bollards were installed someone considered that the music festival takes place annually, and that this is the location where the main stage has been positioned for many years!

Sadly, as you will see from the councils first response below, the answer he got was not helpful and somewhat brief.

To: Paul White,

I am writing in relation to your enquiry requesting a parking sign be moved from High Street, Milford-on-Sea.

Our Assistant Highways Engineer has advised regretfully that we cannot remove permanently installed signs.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Hopefully, whoever responded from Hampshire County Council has misunderstood the request, as it is not intended for the sign to be removed permanently.

It is also likely that the respondent is unaware of the significance and size of our Music Festival, and its importance in the village and surrounding areas. Surely, once the issue is clearly understood a resolution can be found?

As soon as she was aware of the issue, Cllr Fran Carpenter, our Hampshire County Councillor, was on the case, and she is looking in to what she can do to help.

I expect that our Parish Council are also doing the same.

We all know that the Milford on Sea Music Festival is the largest event our village holds, and many people are excited for the fun to come. That might be thwarted somewhat if there is an 8ft pole in the way!

Hampshire County Council have a webpage where messages can be sent to the Transport and Roads Team (Who I assume would look after the road furniture). It might be helpful if polite messages were sent explaining why a solution is so important for the Milford Music Festival. To visit the council comments page, please click here

I am sure the people at Hampshire County Council love music as much as we do, and I remain hopeful that our next update on this problem will be to say that the council have helped and resolved the issue.

The music festival takes place on the village green from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July 2023, and all is being done to try to get Hampshire County Council to help resolve the issue by then.

Talk: The Future of University Dorset Hospitals

An upcoming 'University Hospitals Dorset Talk' at The Bridge at 2pm on Monday 3rd July is expected to discuss the plans, and to gain feedback; about the University Dorset Hospitals; which are primarily Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch, - locations which a number of Milford on Sea residents use.

This is event is free to attend so just turn up on the day.

Note after clarification: This talk will not be discussing the War Memorial Hospital.

Keith Mitchell, one of the UHD governors, presents this talk on the The Hospital Sites Development Plans and changes taking place at University Hospitals Dorset. This is a time of great change and plans are in place to transform our local hospitals. The total programme of work runs up to 2026 and forms part of the £259m transformation and development plans for their hospital sites.

There will be lots of question opportunities and also an opportunity to feed back your views on the changes taking place. The Trust is very keen to obtain feedback on any aspect of hospital life.

Keith said ‘I really enjoy these talks, and the more questions I am asked, the better. I won’t always know the answer to every question but what I can do is to come back to the Trust and find someone who will know and then I can report back.’
