Christmas Dining in Milford on Sea

10 June 2023

Clean Sweep for Milford Girl Cricketers

With the strength of their Girls’ Cricket Club growing, Milford on Sea Primary School was able to enter three teams into this year’s New Forest School Sports Partnership Girls Dynamo Cricket Tournament, held at Calmore Cricket Club, on Thursday 25th May.

The three Milford teams were named after Rachel Heyhoe Flint, the inspirational England cricketer who did so much for the women’s game and each of the Heys, the Hoes and the Flints were drawn in three different pools of three for the first part of the Tournament.

The Heys, The Hoes and The Flints

The Heys dominated their pool with convincing victories over Marchwood B and Abbotswood B, while the Hoes, up against Marchwood A and Calmore, lost both of their matches despite some super play. The Flints went up against Abbotswood A and Orchard and ended the morning with one victory and one loss.

These results meant that the teams were once again split into three different Tiers for the finals, allowing each to aim for their own ‘Top Spot’. The Heys were drawn against Abbotswood and Marchwood A teams in Tier 1; the Flints took on Abbotswood B and Calmore in Tier 2 and the Hoes played against Marchwood B and Orchard in the 3rd Tier.

After their nervous start to the tournament, the Hoes and the Flints grew in confidence with each game played and all three teams shone during the afternoon, playing some amazing cricket and showing fantastic teamwork.

They each won all of their final matches, securing a clean sweep of 1st places and Gold Medals for Milford on Sea – a truly amazing result! For the second year in a row, The Heys brought back the NFSSP trophy and have qualified for the Hampshire County Finals to be played on 20th June at the Ageas Bowl.

About Milford Girls Cricket

The Milford Girls Cricket teams started when Carolyn Brown and some other local coaches made a number of homemade cricket videos during the first Covid Lockdown in March 2020, and then invited Milford on Sea Primary School to form some girls cricket teams. Since then, the teams have grown from strength to strength.

The teams play at Barnes Lane Recreation Ground and train weekly during the season to play in three teams; The Heys, The Hoes and The Flints (named after Rachael Heyhoe Flint, the former English Women’s Captain).

In the first two seasons, from complete novices, nine girls played District Cricket, with two featuring in the U11 Hampshire Girls squad. Five Y4 Milford schoolgirls were crowned Hampshire U9 Champions, and eight of the U11s became Hampshire Champions or Runners-up in both softball and hardball.

Milford on Sea Primary School also won the Girls Dynamos Cricket Hampshire County Final after taking a staggering 10 wickets at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday 28th June 2022.

In 2023, the three Milford on Sea Primary School teams entered the New Forest School Sports Partnership Girls Dynamo Cricket Tournament held at Calmore Cricket Club on Thursday 25th May. They each won all of their final matches, securing a clean sweep of 1st places and Gold Medals for Milford on Sea.

At the same tournament, and for the second year in a row, The Heys brought back the NFSSP trophy and qualified for the Hampshire County Finals to be played on 20th June 2023 at the Ageas Bowl.

New players are always welcome, to find out more, please contact Carolyn Brown at capat40@hotmail.com.
