Beauty Salon in Laundry Lane

Did you know that there is a beauty salon in Laundry Lane Trading Estate, Milford on Sea?

Karlie-Ann Birtchnell is a local beautician who owns and runs Beauty Queen Milford. Her services include; lash extensions, lash lifting, waxing, intimate waxing, microblading and Permanent Make-up Brows.

She entered the beauty industry in 2016, originally starting out as a mobile lash and nail technician.

After moving locally from Buckinghamshire in 2017 she started up The Lash Lady Lymington working mobile in lashes, lash lifts and brows. Karlie retook her waxing qualifications in 2019 followed closely by her intimate waxing qualifications and this side of her business has really taken off through her fantastic reputation and great reviews. She has since gained 2 extra qualifications for intimate waxing and as this is her most popular treatment it is the treatment she has chosen to specialise in.

In early 2019 she opened up her studio and has since changed to Beauty Queen Milford.

Karlie is an award winning lash lift technician, a master lash extension artist, highly qualified brow technician and has advanced certification in waxing and intimate waxing. She was also recently made a finalist in the Hair and Beauty awards lash extension stylist of the year award. Has recently been shortlisted as the British Beauty Awards Waxing Specialist of the year and took 3rd place master lash lift in the Jade Jones lockdown competition.

Most of all though she just loves and has a massive passion for her work, enjoys learning each treatment she takes on as thoroughly as possible and having a laugh.

Karlie-Ann is currently running an offer on PMU Brows, so if you are interested please click here to find out more.

League of Friends hold 70th AGM

Milford Hospital League of Friends held their 70th Annual General Meeting on Monday 2th7 September 2021

Vice Chairman Don Waite opened the Meeting at the Community Centre in the absence of the Chairman Julie Badham and welcomed 31 members of the League and one visitor, and thanked them for their support. Apologies were received from 15 members.

The Minutes of the Annual General General Meeting held in May 2019 were approved.

Don read the Chairman's report which highlighted the problems being encountered during the Covid pandemic. Julie reported on changes in the Committee and recorded her thanks to its members.

In stating that she was standing down as Chairman due to a proposed move away from the area, she reviewed the highs and lows of being a Committee Member, and volunteer at the War Memorial Hospital. Thankfully the hospital was being well used now as a Covid vaccination centre, but it seemed that its future was still in some jeopardy, if the Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) was to have its way. She called on everyone to support the League of Friends

Treasurer Barry Caddick reported on 2019 + 2020. The lack of activities due to Covid had a major impact on funds, with reserves in 2019 falling to £101,000 and even lower to £97,500 in 2020.

The Report was accepted, as was his proposal to move from an external audit to an inspection of accounts, with a saving of some £600 per annum.

Following the re-election of the existing Committee, two new members were appointed, and Don Waite confirmed as Chairman.

Angela Eldridge
receiving 20 year certificate

After expressing his thanks to the meeting for his appointment, the new Chairman proceeded to present long service awards for 10 years’ service to Jean Halliday, Helen Lister and Josie Warren; and a 20 year certificate to Angela Eldridge.

The Chairman expressed his thanks to Julie Badham for all of her years of service and dedication to the League of Friends and also outlined in broad terms his intentions regarding contact with the CCG and Milford Medical Centre.

There followed a lively discussion ranging from the League’s exercise classes, what might happen to the hospital, its War Memorial status, the possible PR benefit of a change of the League’s name, and future fund-raising plans.

The Chairman closed the meeting with thanks to all attendees.

Sea swimming with Milford Bluetits

Milford on Sea Bluetits are a social group of local sea swimmers.

As their Facebook page explains:

No club fees, registration, rules, requirements, expectations. We are an informal group of mixed gender people who just like to swim together. Some carry on throughout the winter months, some don’t. Some enter swimming events, some swim across the Channel, some meet every morning same time, same place and swim chat their way through the water. Others swim ice miles, some meet for coffee and cake, and maybe a swim or even a paddle.

Our link to each other initially is the joy of challenging ourselves to potter in and around open water together throughout the year in swimsuits.

If you would like to find out more about the group, planned swims or anything else; please visit their Facebook page on the link below.

Fundraising for a Magical Milford at Christmas

Autumn is fast approaching and Diana Brushwood and Tracy Haupt are already busy planning this year’s Christmas display on the village green.

The substantial plans for this year will hopefully bring lots of well needed cheer to our lovely village after a difficult 18 months of Covid restrictions.

The downside to this is the cost of the additional commercial grade lights, the extra Christmas trees, and the professional installation of all the lighting displays.

Obviously, all these extra items will be in addition to all the commercial grade lights which have been purchased over the last couple of years.

If you would like to help us achieve this, please donate through the link below – large or small donations will be gratefully received.

To donate, please click here and type in Milford on Sea Charitable Trust. Also, when donating please type Christmas in the special message box, this ensures the money goes into the correct account.

You can also make a cash/cheque donation at the Parish Council Office.

Thank you to everyone who can help get the village joyous this Christmas for the whole village to enjoy.

Help to build a stage set for village show

Live theatre is back! - and help is needed to build the set for the stage.

Neil Simon's Rumours will be staged at the Community Centre for, and on behalf of, the Milford on Sea Community Centre in October.

To allow this show to go ahead there is a major set build to achieve.

Over the last few months the building of the stage extensions has been completed and shortly the flats will be completed.

These are/will be held in store until we need them in October.

To bring all this to a successful conclusion, it will require 3 days of stage and set building at the Community Centre.

The set builder and Stage Manager, Grahame Goodyer, estimates that he will need at least 4 people to help on each day. The village show producers are therefore looking for volunteers to put themselves forward to assist on each day.

This is manual work and some of the stage items are very heavy, so we particularly need able-bodied people prepared to help lift heavy loads. However, if you can use a screwdriver or hammer, there are jobs for you to do as well.

Days volunteers required to help are:-
  • Friday Oct 22 from 12pm through to 5pm
  • Saturday 23 Oct from 8am through to 8pm
  • Sunday 24 October from 9am through to 6pm
We accept that most people will not be able to put in a full day but if you are available to help, for any period of time on any day, we would ask you to put your name forward.

If you can help, please can you contact Grahame by email at grahame@goodyer.org or call/message him on 07860 587272.

Enticing Autumn Film Evenings by the Big Screen

The Village’s Community Centre is delighted to announce a return to a full autumn programme of movies and “live” screenings at the Centre.

Highlights of the special screenings feature Mick Fleetwood with a stella line up of his friends filmed live at the London Palladium last year, Cliff Richard’s The Great 80 Tour from the Royal Albert Hall, Handa Opera’s magnificent La Traviata from the water stage in Sydney Harbour and of course the Royal Ballet’s perennial Christmas favourite The Nutcracker from the Royal Opera House. Into the mix goes Concerto – A Beethoven Journey which follows concert pianist’s Leif Ove Andsnes’ epic interpretation of the Master’s five piano concerti, Northern Ballet’s bodice-ripping retelling of Dangerous Liaisons set to music by Vivaldi and a visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam’s extraordinary exhibition of the five publicly-owned paintings of Sunflowers. The screenings programme is completed with a requested encore of the award winning movie of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, a bold new interpretation of Romeo & Juliet filmed in seventeen days on a single stage in a pandemically emptied National Theatre and the first visit of the awe inspiring and uplifting Cirque du Soleil with its fabulous Worlds Away seamlessly combining daring acrobatics and intense artistry into a simple yet emotionally rich story.

The movies programme kicks off with the Oscar winning Nomadland with Frances McDormand’s wonderful portrayal of a cheerful, resourceful middle aged woman who has lost everything; puppy Bella a lost but high spirited and friendly animal who has to find A Dog’s Way Home; a biography of Audrey Hepburn who faced a life-long battle with the traumas of her past to become one of the world’s greatest cultural icons; A United Kingdom which tells a romantic true story of interracial marrying from our dowdy post-war past with terrific warmth and idealism; a gentle, sweet, funny story of love in later life realised over 23 Walks, an enchanting film about a Korean family making a new start in rural 80s Arkansas Minari; and concluding with Sheila Hancock’s Edie who turns her back on her family sending her to a care home to climb the remote imposing Mount Suilven in the far north of Scotland.

All the movies and screenings are in the Centre, with 60 comfortable seats arranged cabaret style around small tables – this makes sure everyone has a good view and a place to put their drinks.

Book early to avoid disappointment – sadly seats cannot be guaranteed if you just turn up on the door.

More information and to book seats pop along to the Box Office at the Centre in Sea Road (or telephone (01590) 644861 or visit website www.moscommunitycentre.org.uk.

Busking for BECOME Charity on the Village Green

Each year 10,000 young people are dropped by the care system at the age of 18 and have to fend for themselves. This is called the 'Care Cliff' and is a disaster with 50% of them really struggling with their transition to adulthood without family support. Add this up and we have c.500,000 care experienced people nationwide, many of whom have lifelong issues caused by their experiences.

Local pensioner Mark Law is fundraising for the national registered charity BECOME, the charity for children in care and young care leavers. Following a discussion with MoS Parish Council, Mark has been given permission to perform several sponsored busking gigs on the Village Green.

You can sponsor him with all funds going directly to BECOME via his JustGiving page by clicking here.

These impromptu gigs on the Village Green are weather dependent and will most likely occur around lunchtimes and early evenings in the coming weeks. Repertoire is a mix of popular covers and original material.

Mark would love to hear from you so why not drop by and say hello?
