About The Beach House

The Grade II listed Westover Hall was built in 1897 for Alexander Siemens (who created the world’s first public electricity supply) as a summer house for his family.

Built in the Arts and Crafts style by architect Arnold Mitchell, it was once judged the most luxurious residence on England’s south coast.

Siemens had married Louisa Dodwell in 1881 and she didn’t like the Victorian style of décor which resulted in the wonderful stained glass windows instead of heavy drapes.

A number of the imposing stained glass windows, which can still be seen when visiting today, portray Pre-Raphaelite scenes from the “The Enchanted Wood”.  The windows were designed by Oscar Patterson who was renowned for his work in the Glasgow style.

Following his death in 1928 Westover Hall was bought in 1930 by William Morris, later Lord Nuffield, who was the founder of the Morris Motor Co.

During World War Two, Westover Hall was requisitioned by the war office and used as officers’ quarters for the whole of WWII.

After a number of other owners, it became a hotel in 1977.

Hall & Woodhouse bought Westover Hall in 2012 and renamed it to; ‘The Beach House’, to reflect how the Siemens family had always used it.

The Beach House pub restaurant & hotel has impressive raised patio areas and extensive gardens with great views across to The Needles and the Isle of Wight. There are also 14 charming hotel rooms, each one unique and boutique styled. The pub is also dog friendly, and if you want a bowl of water or even a little treat for man’s best friend, please just ask.

  1. A cousin of mine, Tony Ruddle, ran the Westover in the mid to late 80s. If anybody in the village has strong memories of Tony I would be interested in meeting up.
