Controversial Floating Pier approved at Milford on Sea

A recent New Forest Council Meeting descended into chaos after a controversial floating pier was approved for Milford on Sea. Objections were raised at the meeting, but the NFDC Planning Committee overruled the objections and granted permission for construction of the pier this summer.

A key objection stated that the pier would ‘damage the unique character of Milford on Sea’. But it was counter-argued that the pier would ‘increase tourism to the village, provide a landing stage for boats and allow people an opportunity to get closer to sea-life’.

The pier will be located opposite the Needles Eye Café with construction work due to commence on the 2nd June for completion within four weeks.

The innovative pier design is multi-functional providing a walkway to a jetty on calm days, the jetty also provides seating and a landing stage for small boats who wish to visit Milford on Sea. On days when the sea has a swell it provides a fun ‘moving walkway’ for the more adventurous. The design is based on an existing floating pier at Maliah Beach Club which can be seen on the video link below.

Angry local resident, Arty Fischel was appalled and said; ‘Anything new in the village should be for everybody, and how do they expect people with walking frames to use this monstrosity?’.

Never slow to see an opportunity, local entrepreneur, Joe King has stated that he intends to make an application to provide scuba diving classes and banana boat rides from the jetty from early summer.

The designer of the Floating Pier, Mr Ubin Hadd commented; ‘Just imagine…, the sun shining, the warm sea breeze in your hair, and the waves lapping over your feet. You’re going to love it!”

Local residents are expected to lodge an appeal in the coming days. If you have a view that you would like to express, please contact: April Day, NFDC Planning Officer, Lyndhurst, Hampshire on aprilday@nfdcplanning.jo.ke

The Natural History of Milford-on-Sea Parish - Book (1)

A message from Keith Metcalf about his first book on Milford on Sea wildlife:

"Just a short note to say thank you to everybody who purchased or received a copy of my first book on the wildlife of Milford-on-Sea parish.

Nearly 100 books were sold and and another 50 that had been given to the numerous contributors to the books content. I now have just a handful left for sale at £30 each.

As you may recall, I said that I would donate a small contribution to both Oakhaven Hospice and to Milford Conservation Volunteers for each book sold, plus from various additional sums given where recipients wished to make a personal donation to either, or both, of these wonderful causes.

I am therefore delighted to let you know that Oakhaven has acknowledged receipt of the £170 handed to them a couple of weeks ago and

I have also given £150 towards MCV conservation projects.

Thank you so much for making these contributions, which were gratefully received.

Keith Metcalf

PS: Look out for Book (2) late this year."

All Saints' Church publish 'What we have learnt'

This is the story behind a 40-page booklet produced by members of All Saints’ and St. Mary’s, described by Florence Iles:

At the height of the pandemic, to uplift and encourage the congregation in Gardenstown New Church, near Aberdeen, the Pastor’s wife, Megan Gray was inspired to produce a booklet of contributions from church members relating their thoughts and reflections of 2020 and how with their faith, hope and trust they were able to ride the havoc the virus was causing. We were told how people benefited from the experience of writing their thoughts. We were given a copy and then purchased more copies for friends locally.

A seed was sown in our minds that our community too could benefit from this exercise of writing our thoughts, prayers and reflections during the last 20 months of being without a priest in charge (interregnum) but also in a war against an unknown and unseen enemy - Covid-19 (pandemic). It would also serve as a record of one of the most challenging times of the 21st century to date. The result is a collection of reflections from over 35 members of All Saints’ and St Mary’s. There is prose, there is poetry and there is spiritual awakening in many of the writings. People have established new priorities and appreciated and given thanks for the community we live in.

“What Have We Learnt During the Interregnum in a Pandemic” will be available for sale, at £3.00 per copy to cover printing costs, from the following church members and locations:

Ray's serves 2000+ lunches looking after our community

After almost a year, Stacey at Ray's Italian Kitchen has provided many takeaway meals around the village.

What people may not know is that she has also provided great value and tasty three-course lunches every Wednesday lunchtime for the more vulnerable in the village. This proved so popular that she has now provided over 2000 meals!

Now that lockdown is gradually lifting, she is making plans to reopen from 13th April serving her restaurant menu in the garden at Ray's Italian Kitchen. She is also introducing a new Deli Counter in place of the pop-up larder shop.

Well done Stacey, I know there are many grateful people out there.

Parish Council Consult on Public Open Space

Milford-on-Sea Parish Council will shortly formally adopt the new public open space north of School Lane when the housing has been completed. Decisions have been made for this land except those made at the public enquiry for small scale play equipment to be provided for younger children at the southern end of the site as well as 8 small allotment plots and a car parking area at the northern point of the site.

To view plans
please click here

No decisions have been made for this land as yet and The Parish Council considers it is essential that all interested residents and groups have a full opportunity to express their views as to how they consider the remaining land can best be used. To this end, the Parish Council is conducting this full consultation beginning on 15th March which will run to the end of April. The Parish Council will then set out proposals for a final period of consultation in the light of the views that have been gathered.

The Parish Council recognises that there may be strongly held and differing views within the community. The aim of the Council is to ensure all residents have a full opportunity to be consulted, to express their view and to consider the views of others.

As you can also see by the dimensions, the land is of reasonable size and the Parish Council is keen to find out from the community what additional facilities might be added to make this parcel of land beneficial to the whole community.

There are currently no limitations to what may be considered, including sport activities, additional equipment, long term projects, wildlife areas, additional planting & landscaping. Therefore, the Parish Council would like to know your thoughts and aspirations.

If you would like to inform us of any ideas you may have on how best to utilise this community asset then complete our quick online survey - please click here

Village enters the Greening Campaign

In 2020 the Parish Council voted to Declare a Climate Emergency. Hampshire County Council has done the same. Our County Council is also promoting the Greening Campaign.

On Feb 2nd this year Councillor Ken Cameron proposed that Milford on Sea Parish Council should adopt phase 1 of the Greening Campaign. This was carried. This is seen by our Parish Council as a significant opportunity for our Community to take action against Climate Change.

This campaign has been taken up by a number of towns and villages in England following an initiative by Teresa Plowright. Milford on Sea will be the first village in NFDC to add its voice to the campaign.

This Campaign is designed to involve the whole of the village community and its object is to seek to persuade as many people as possible to make small changes in their behaviour at home and so reduce the CO2 emissions of the village.

Following an information campaign to inform the village about the campaign, everyone will be invited to vote on their preferred challenges out of suggested measures to reduce the emission of CO2 for the village.

Subsequently each household will receive a card setting out the result of the vote and listing the preferred challenges. There will also be a public meeting to launch the campaign.

Each household which adopts the challenges will be requested to place the card in their window in a conspicuous place where they can be seen and following a period of time these cards will be collected to calculate the effect of the challenges accepted on the carbon emissions for the community as a whole.

Simon aims for the Commonwealth Para Games

Simon Heaps is Milford on Sea resident and also an International para-table tennis player.

He has recently been selected at a number of International Tournaments and is looking to raise funds to represent his country.

As Simon explains:

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Para 2021 Calendar was released about 3 weeks ago and last Thursday I got a phone call from GB Para Table Tennis Head Coach to advise that I will be going to the following Tournaments on the resumption, playing in Class 5 Wheelchair Table Tennis.

June 2021
Slovakia Para Open - Bratislava
Thailand Para Open - Pattaya
Spanish Para Open - Girona

July 2022
Czech Para Open - Ostrava
Taipei Para Open - Taipei

These are on a self funding basis and I have to continue to raise funds for myself even though I am representing Great Britain and I will be travelling with the GB Olympic Squad. I anticipate the cost of these Tournaments will be between £6 and £10k.

They are a must to gain World Ranking points to gain selection for England in the 2022 Commonwealth Para Games, which is my dream. I am currently 65 and will be a few days short of my 67th birthday in Birmingham if selected.

One way of raising much needed funds is advertising on my car. If any local businesses would you like to see their company name and logo, sponsoring a disabled athlete, on my vehicle until October 2022 please get in touch.

If you would like more information you can contact Simon, by clicking here.

About Simon

Just a very brief history, I am 65, lost my right leg in May 2019 and am aiming to get to the 2022 Commonwealth Para Games in Birmingham and represent England in Wheelchair Table Tennis. I get no funding whatsoever from my NGB and have to raise my own funds entirely. I live in Milford on Sea but travel the whole area playing and training along with national tournaments when they resume.

WI support a Bag to Banish Plastic

Milford on Sea WI are supporting a new project; 'The Becton Bag Banishes Plastic' started by the local Rotary Club.

The project has been inspired by the damage that discarded plastic causes to our environment. Becton Rotary Club (which covers Milford on Sea) are working with New Forest Basics Bank (NFBB) to eliminate the use of plastic carrier bags currently used to deliver food items to those in need.

With an estimated usage of 1,000 bags per week successful elimination will have a positive impact on the environment.

The plastic carrier bags are to be replaced with material bags (The Becton Bag) made to an agreed specification between Rotary members and NFBB; Lynn Peck, Volunteer Head of Operations at New Forest Basics Bank said “It will be a wonderful achievement and a boost to the environment if we can totally eliminate the use of plastic bags for our deliveries. The material bags will be reusable and when returned will undergo a process to confirm they are free from infection before being used again. We are grateful to the members of the Rotary Club of Becton & District and the volunteers who have agreed to sew the bags for the considerable support they have provided to this project”.

Becton Rotary is grateful for the support already pledged to the project by members of Milford on Sea WI, Brockenhurst & Sway Bag Groups and other volunteers.

Following extensive testing to confirm the bags design and the accuracy of the patterns / instructions Becton Rotary are now seeking volunteers to help with sewing the bags using donated / own material. Patterns/instructions will be provided by Becton Rotary and can be downloaded from the Club website www.bectonrotary.org.uk . Collection points for completed bags and donated material are being set up at New Forest Basics Bank in Lymington and around the Milford on Sea / New Milton / Barton / Sway and Pennington areas.

Anyone wishing to either donate material or volunteer to sew the bags should contact:
bectonbag@bectonrotary.org.uk to receive further details.

School children appeal for their classmates

The Covid 19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of technology in education and to us all in our everyday lives. There is no doubt that our children need to be computer literate and have access to the very best learning platforms if we want them to be prepared for their future education and beyond.

Our local primary school's very own Mr Groarke has teamed up with some of their pupils to set up a Schools Crowdfunding Page. We want to ensure every child at Milford on Sea Primary School has access to the equipment they need to ensure a high quality education both in and out of school.

Please click here or on the link below to see a short introductory student film and details of how to donate.

Green Flag Eco Award for our school

Fabulous news, Milford on Sea Primary School have once again gained their Green Flag Eco Schools Award.

This is a tribute to all the hard work everyone puts into global learning in the school.

The fact that they have been able to get this without even being in school, shows just how much has been achieved and the vast amount of evidence they have of children participating in high quality eco/global activities and learning continuously (Curriculum Work, Beach schools, Forest Schools, global themed work, climate strike awareness etc... the list goes on!)

Congratulations go to all staff, pupils and parents that have helped the school achieve this prestigious award once again!

The Green Flag Eco Schools Manager commented as below:

"Thank you very much for your recent Green Flag application, I am very pleased to say your school has passed. Congratulations on achieving your 3rd Green Flag!

I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you for continuing to work on your Eco-Schools Green Flag during these unprecedented times- it is a true reflection of your schools determination to make a real difference. If possible please pass on my thanks to your Eco-Committee, I really loved your Eco-Board time line and that you had used the SDGs too.

Once again well done and thank you for all your hard work
