Rebrand for Mandy at Elmsleigh Cakes

Renowned Milford on Sea cake designer and baker, Mandy Black has recently rebranded her company from Elmsleigh Cakes to Amanda Black Cakes.

The new company name now reflects the individuality of her sophisticated individual cake designs.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Mandy recently spent a week in September honing her talents by participating in an intensive course in the highlands of Scotland, led by multi-award winning cake designer & baker Paul Bradford

Paul is one of the world's most respected cake designers and holds the prestigious Disciples D’Escoffier award, which he was awarded for his dedication to sharing his cake skills. He has made cakes for many famous people and royal families, including the late Queen.

Mandy commented: "We had the best of times and my creative brain went into overload. During the course I made two new wedding cake designs which not only wowed the other students but also Paul himself, if that isn’t an accolade I don’t know what is. Anyhow with his encouragement I have taken the plunge to grow my company and rebrand to reflect how my business and my cakes are now as my creative journey has evolved."

The sophisticated cake designs below demonstrate another evolution in Mandy's skills and experience.

Next, Mandy has been personally invited by Paul Bradford to be part of his display at Cake International, the biggest cake show in the world, at Birmingham NEC in November 2023.

---------------------------------

About Amanda Black Cakes

Mandy initially founded her company in Milford on Sea as Elmsleigh Cakes in 2011.

Mandy's journey so far has taken her from being a computer operations manager who started making cakes for her kids, and on to making cakes for everyone, including our royal family.

In 2022 (and again in 2023), Mandy received worthy recognition of her talents as a baker and cake artist when she was recognised as one of the Top Three Cake Makers in the New Forest.

In summer 2023, Mandy was invited to be a Cake Judge at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show.

In September 2023, she attended a week long intensive course led by Paul Bradford, holder of the Disciples D’Escoffier award which he was awarded for his dedication to sharing his cake honing her already exceptional cake making skills, and one of the world's most respected cake designers.

During the year, Mandy rebranded her company to Amanda Black Cakes to reflect the individuality of her ever evolving cake designs.

In November 2023, Mandy was personally invited by Paul Bradford to feature her cakes in his display at Cake International, the biggest cake show in the world at Birmingham NEC.

At the show Mandy stands shoulder to shoulder with the big names in cake design from around the world. People that she looked up to, and who’s books she bought when first starting creating amazing cakes.

About Milford on Sea Community Library

In 2020, Hampshire County Council withdrew funding, and Milford on Sea Library was forced to close on 20th March 2020.

The library had been located in Milford on Sea Village Hall for several years. The Village Hall is operated by the trustees of the Milford Village Association (MVA) and they were happy for the library to stay.

So, the Library team, of Jill Neil, Liz Everard, Clare Johnston and several others, set about founding Milford on Sea Community Library in consultation with Hampshire County Council.  Their quest was successful, and Milford on Sea Community Library became an independent self-funded library, run by volunteers, on 16th March 2021.

During Lockdown in 2020, to help keep community spirits up, the Library Team and Milford Mutual Aid with Jenny Whitely and valuable volunteers produced The Good News Newsletter, which was circulated throughout the village. A mini version of TGN as it has become known, continues to be published in the Village Voice Magazine.

The Milford on Sea Village Hall is also used by various community group and they are always willing to accommodate events, presentations and classes where possible.

Alex takes over at Butchers on the Green

Alex Farr has been one of our village's traditional butchers, working at the bench and behind the counter at Butchers on the Green since October 2021. Alongside him was the familiar face of owner and master butcher, Keith Potter.

Keith, purchased the business from Dave Gates two years ago, and he has now decided to handover the business, and Alex is now the proud owner of Butchers on the Green.

Keith will still be seen behind the counter now and then, as he intends to work in Butchers on the Green part-time every so often.

In the past couple of years Alex & Keith have created a reputation for themselves in the village for providing quality meats and pre-prepared meals with a friendly and helpful service, and Alex has some exciting plans to provide even more for shoppers in Milford on Sea.

Alex said: "I am excited to have been given this opportunity to carry on serving and providing a service to this tight knit community. I am looking to expand the ranges of meat, fish, cheese condiments and pastries that we offer, to make it a more inclusive and integral part of the village. I am committed to sourcing the finest products at affordable prices. All I ask for is the residents of Milford on Sea to come in and give us a try please.

There are a lot of misconceived ideas that we, as local butchers, are expensive, however many of our products are comparative or even cheaper (per kg) than supermarkets. I think you would be very surprised the prices we offer, and without the cost and time of driving outside of the village!

I look forward to seeing you in here, and please keep your eye on our social media platforms for offers and meat value freezer packs.

Thank you all for your continued support for keeping your independent local shops operating."

Butchers on the Green is owned and managed by Alex Farr a former pub head chef who retrained as a butcher around 2010. He now uses his culinary skills to make the pre-prepared meals on sale in the shop.

Butchers on the Green was formerly known as The Butchers Shop, an award winning butchers which had been owned and run by Dave Gates for 36 years until his retirement in October 2021.

The business was then purchased by Keith Potter, an experienced master butcher who had owned other butcher businesses in the past, and he rebranded the shop to Butchers on the Green. Alongside Keith from the beginning was Alex Farr who managed the business day to day with him.

In October 2023 Keith retired, and Alex became the proud owner of Butchers on the Green, with Keith taking an occasional part-time role.

Village Millennium Clock repaired

It is very nice to see that the village Millennium Clock has been repaired and renovated to its former glory by renowned clock specialist and the original maker, 'Smiths of Derby'.

The repair and renovation was possible after a community fundraising campaign secured around half of the £5000 required to cover the costs. The balanced was covered by the Parish Council.

Back in 2000, the beautiful double-sided illuminated Millennium Clock was a wonderful addition for the village, and it was erected on the wall above what is now the Lymington Cat & Kitten Rescue charity shop in Milford on Sea village centre.

In 2008, an appeal for funds to move the clock to a lower position was held. Due to the generosity of villagers, that appeal raised £3,000 and the Millennium Clock was serviced and moved lower down, making it easier for villagers and visitors to see the time more clearly.

Unfortunately due to the pandemic, lack of regular service, and its exposed position, the clock started to keep a time of its own, either six hours fast or six hours slow depending on your viewpoint. Thus, the fundraising appeal was commenced in April 2023 and championed by Parish Councillor, Peter Jennions.

The Parish Council have committed to cover the cost of regular servicing by Smiths of Derby going forward.

So, with a bit of luck, the village Millennium Clock will now be keeping good time for many years to come.

Danestream Flooding Now and in the Past

Local resident, Janis Anderson has sent in some interesting pictures of the Danestream in Milford on Sea flooding. The photos show The Pleasure Grounds and paths by the Japanese Bridge under water on the weekend of the 28th October 2023.

Other parts of the village were also affected with flooding throughout the week, as the downpours were unrelenting. This included The Lazy Lion pub garden, Lymore Lane, Saltgrass Lane in Keyhaven, plus several other places.

Milford on Sea village is not new to flooding, as covered in some previous articles:

Bob Braid of the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society previously shared some photos and newspaper cutting of flooding in the village from 1968 and 1982.

At the time, Bob commented; "This is how the village used to be before the 'Downton Lane Dam'. 1968: I think the estate car was owned by the owner of Bay Trees who got fed up with vehicles sending waves through his front door; until the police told him to move it."

New Forest Catchment Flood Management Plan

Published in December 2009, an interesting document highlighted the village and the Milford Flood Alleviation Scheme.

The village has flood defences and structures at the Flood Storage Reservoir and the Flood Attenuation Dam on the Danes Stream upstream towards Downton, Milford on Sea.

In Autumn 2000, an Environment Agency report, described the Milford Dam Flood Alleviation Scheme as having been designed to store water during high flows. The gate operation is automatic and if there is a power loss, air pressure will close the gate to the fail-safe condition. It will open on resumption of power but the gas cylinder will need changing.

This defence prevented Milford on Sea village from flooding 4 times during the Autumn 2000 event.

The Danestream
The New Forest Catchment Flood Management Plan detailed the regional flood risk in 2009, and concluded that the main source of flooding in the New Forest area is from rivers with significant influence from tidal conditions. Risks that are most significant included Milford on Sea and Keyhaven

The report also stated that; 'There have been several large events over the last century, particularly on the Danes Stream'.

Based on an impact of a 1% annual probability flood event, in 2009 the number of properties at risk was 77. This was forecast to rise to 244 by 2100. Near the coast, river flooding may be affected by high tide levels, which is expected to get worse with any predicted future sea level rise.

January 2023: Danestream bursts its banks

Long-time local resident, Paul Baker (and his little buddy, Luka) captured a dramatic video as they waded through the flooding close to the slope at the junction of Blackbush Road and Sharvells Road. Please click here to read article.

Memories of the Danestream: Following publishing the article 'Danestream bursts its banks' we  received memories from Alice Yeandle. Alice was bought up in Milford on Sea, having moved to village from Worthing at 5 years of age. She now lives in France. Please click here to read article

January 2023: Lazy Lion Cellar flooded

Having needed to close for a few days following their cellar being flooded, The Lazy Lion soon reopened and was back and welcoming customers for tasty breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

------------------------------------

'Danestream or Danes Stream, who knows?'

Nothing to do with flooding, but in previous articles we have pointlessly investigated the correct name for the Danestream. Please click here to read article.

------------------------------------

The 'Pleasure Grounds' through which the Danestream runs, is understood to have only got its name around the 2000's. Previously it was known as 'The Pleasure Gardens'; as it had been planted up as an ornamental garden and it was part of the 19th century Georgian attempt to turn Milford on Sea into a prominent and gentrified seaside resort.

Some long-standing village residents also refer the area simply as "Pledge".
