A tribute to Michelle

Those of you who have enjoyed the amazing performances of lovely soprano Michelle Walton will be so saddened to hear of her sudden death. Michelle has sung with Colin Judson at several opera events at Milford on Sea Community Centre and, memorably, at the great concert held at the recreation ground as Covid retreated where Michelle and her husband Mark sang an unforgettable 'Bess, You is my Woman Now' followed by Michelle’s 'Summertime.'

Michelle was a wonderful member of the stunning group who performed arias and songs at the Community Centre way back in 2017, singing such a variety as 'Oh Mio Babbino Caro'  and 'I Could Have Danced All Night' as well as taking our breath away as Carmen in 2019.

We are so sad for Michelle’s family and friends and of course in particular for Colin and Pippa Judson who have lost a dear friend.

Milford on Sea Gardeners’ Club celebrate 25 Years

Milford on Sea Gardeners’ Club recently celebrated their 25th year with a party for 63 members, past and present at Milford on Sea Community Centre.

The “posh” china was out and the splendid cream tea was provided by Oakhaven catering services.

Old photographs from the club's archives were on display on boards and members did the celebration proud by bringing flowers to decorate the front of the stage, no mean feat given the drought conditions we have been experiencing .

Founder members and past Chairs, Jan England and Jenny Spenser, attended and Sue Crabb, the current chair was there to help them cut the magnificent cake, baked and decorated by one of the club's committee members.

Raffle prizes were generously donated by local businesses and the raffle raised £134 for Club charities, so a very big thank you to them.

All in all, it was a lovely event which ran exactly to plan with the help of a fabulous team of helpers.

Here’s hoping the Club will still be going strong for the 30th anniversary!

Milford Music-Music for a healthy mind

Prior to the pandemic there were activities in Milford on Sea for people affected by dementia, which sadly closed down temporarily.

The Milford on Sea Charitable Trust, supported by the Community Centre have now started some new groups, one of which is Milford Music - Music for a healthy mind. The group will meet on the second and fourth Thursday afternoon every month from 2pm to 3.30pm at Milford on Sea Community Centre

This new inclusive community music group is open to anyone who likes to sing, or just sit and listen to the music. People affected by dementia or similar conditions are particularly welcomed, along with a family member or carer. Why not come along for a cup of tea, and see what you think? School looking to replace lost PE Shed

During Storm Eunice Milford-on-Sea CE Primary School lost their PE Shed which housed all the Sports Equipment for the school.

The PFA are aiming to replace it with a bigger, sturdier Metal Storage Container with Double Doors. They are hoping that the wider community can help with cost and have set up a Just Giving Page for donations.

Sport isn’t just good for children’s bodies; it’s good for their minds too. Studies have shown that sport has psychological benefits for children and adolescents and teaches them important life skills.

Organised sport has many psychological and social benefits for children – even more than the physical activity during play. Researchers think this is because children benefit from the social side of being in a team, and from the involvement of other children and adults.

The school has a great attitude to sport and exercise and the benefits are highlighted below. It is nice to see that the highs and lows of competitive team sport are alive and well in Milford on Sea.

If you are willing and able to donate to the school, please click here

Developmental benefits of PE

Development from sport goes beyond learning new physical skills. Sport helps children develop better ways to cope with the highs and lows of life.

When they’re playing sport, children learn to lose. Being a good loser takes maturity and practice. Losing teaches children to bounce back from disappointment, cope with unpleasant experiences and is an important part of becoming resilient.

Playing sport helps children learn to control their emotions and channel negative feelings in a positive way. It also helps children to develop patience and understand that it can take a lot of practice to improve both their physical skills and what they do in school.

Emotional benefits of PE
Physical activity has been shown to stimulate chemicals in the brain that make you feel better. So playing sport regularly improves children’s overall emotional wellbeing.

Research shows there’s a link between playing sport and self-esteem in children. The support of the team, a kind word from a coach, or achieving their personal best will all help children to feel better about themselves.

Social benefits of PE
Playing in a team helps children to develop many of the social skills they will need for life. It teaches them to cooperate, to be less selfish, and to listen to other children.

It also gives children a sense of belonging. It helps them make new friends and builds their social circle outside school.

An important part of playing in a team is accepting discipline. Playing sport means children are expected to follow rules, accept decisions and understand that they could be penalised for bad behaviour. It teaches them to take directions from the coach, referees and other adults. Sport also teaches them about team work.

Andy running for Wessex Heartbeat

Shelagh Richardson and her husband Peter moved to Milford on Sea from Lymington five years ago, a couple of years after Peter had suffered a sudden massive cardiac arrest in 2015.

At the time of the heart attack, Peter's life was initially saved by a quick thinking friend doing CPR. South Central Ambulance service were there to help very quickly, and then the expertise of the Wessex Cardiac Unit at Southampton General Hospital enabled Peter to survive.

Their Son, Andy has now entered to take part in the London Marathon in aid of Wessex Heartbeat and he has committed to raising £2000.

Shelagh said; "Sadly, none of us know when we might need cardiac medical care or even a bed at Heartbeat House in Southampton." Shelagh herself spent 9 long weeks in their care.

To donate to Andy's fundraising, please click here.

About Wessex Heartbeat

Hurst Spit Land For Sale

A surprising listing has appeared on the Right Move website, showing that an area of Hurst Spit Land at Keyhaven is for sale.

The land comprises of approximately 9 acres on Hurst Spit, plus a further 1.5km of shingle bank jointly owned with Hampshire County Council. The land has a Guide Price of £200,000 for the vendors share.

The land once featured coastguard cottages and a pub which were demolished around 1985. The image of the newspaper cutting to the right tells the story.

It is understood that the land for sale comes under the control of the New Forest National Park Authority and conservation groups, and that no new structures can be put on the land.

As you may expect, the land for sale doesn't include Hurst Castle!

Straight Banana at Folk Night

Milford's very own 'Girl Band' Straight Banana are performing at the Folk Night at 7.30pm on Thursday 11th August

If you like live folk music, then a night out at Milford Folk Club could be just the thing for you.

Held every Second Thursday of the month at the Community Centre, the next evening being Thursday 9th June.

The evening is hosted by Bill Hesp and floor singers welcome.

Bill Hesp

Tickets: £4.50 on the door or in advance from the CC Box Office

The bar opens at 7.15pm and evening ends 10.30pm'ish.

About Milford Folk Club

Milford Folk Club was established in 2007 – more or less with a wing and a prayer. The organiser hadn’t been inside a folk club since the smoky, dingy, hand over ear sessions of the 1960s but had always loved traditional music, both folk and blues.

So, it was with these 60s type back room of pubs / clubs that she remembered and therefore set about running the new Milford Folk Club along the same lines.

We couldn’t replicate the smoky, dingy atmosphere but we did have converted portakabins and beer!

So much support was enjoyed from other clubs, although at that time there were few outlets for acoustic music – not so thirteen years on.

Milford Folk Club was so fortunate to attract the Goodthyme Brothers, Jim Palmer and Bill Hesp.

Bill has stayed the course and is now our regular host and all time walking encyclopedia of folk knowledge: he knows who wrote and recorded everything.

Bill organises the evenings – usually a couple of songs from him, welcome floor singers and guest singer.

In 2010 the folk club moved into the new Community Centre in Milford on Sea – quite posh, really.

The club meets on the second Thursday of each month and still usually follows the format of host, floor singers and guests.

We try to keep the entrance price down to £4.50 although occasionally have to charge a little more if we brave it and book expensive guests.

The folk club is also very pleased to organise the occasional special evening in partnership with Lymington Folk & Blues Club.

Our room has a stage, brilliant lighting and sound systems if needed and we are always keen to listen to all sorts of music. One exciting ‘spin off’ is the regular Blues evenings organised by Bob Long.

The acoustic/traditional scene locally seems to be thriving and, despite many other venues now operating locally, Milford Folk Club often attracts an audience of around 60 or more.

Our guests always say what a great venue it is, what great audiences Milford provides – and we would add how lucky we are to have so much local talent who come along, support the club by singing a few numbers and of course how lucky we are to have a great venue and a great audience.
