Mike Taylor’s last journey

Mike Taylor a regular at St Mary's Church in Everton and father of Caroline, who runs the Milford on Sea Community Centre charity shop, sadly passed away suddenly last week.

St. Mary's Church - Everton
Mike had selflessly helped many people over the years and he also served the community of Everton in many different ways.

Mike’s funeral is next Thursday 21st May 2020. Sadly, there can be no service, however friends and anyone who knew Mike are invited to line the road as the hearse leaves Everton village.

The hearse will leave St Mary's Church car park at 1.30pm, travel to Everton, past Lymore Social Club and then turn around before travelling the length of Old Christchurch Road.

Mike's wife, Pat is going to make a rose garden in memory of Mike and if anyone wants to include a rose, please leave it near St Mary's Church front door and it will be taken to Pats home later in the day.

Unsung Village Heroes

We received this note from a proud mother in Milford on Sea, who writes about her daughter, and at the same time appreciates that many other loved ones are in the same position as her.

This current Coronavirus crisis affects people in many different ways:

"My paramedic daughter, Jane is tired, frightened, resilient, brave, wise, compassionate, angry (with the idiots she encounters on every shift). She won't walk her dog along any narrow paths because she is so worried that she might pass the virus on to someone else because she herself is so exposed. She hasn't seen her sons for 8 weeks. She along with so many others in all sorts of fields are heroes - just that I know and love her. Sorry to bang on but you should know about this doorstep star.

You certainly don’t have to be wearing a uniform to be an essential person."

Really glad that Jane has her age on her side, but I guess that doesn’t make each day much easier.

I can only image what that must be like for all of our key workers and NHS staff in the firing line, as I sit in the comfort and relative security of my home.

Their stress is no doubt shared by their family, friends and probably most by their mum.

I, and I am sure many others, admire what they are all doing for us. Thank you doesn't quite seem enough, but it is sincere, and all we can offer.

Crowdfunding for Ray's Italian Kitchen

On the 1st May, Stacey of Ray's Italian Kitchen in Milford on Sea, launched its “pay it forward’ crowdfunding project as a way of continuing to trade in these uncertain times.

The project allows anyone to buy gift vouchers in advance, enabling Ray’s to mitigate immediate cashflow issues caused by these unprecedented times.

The responses from customers and supporters has been amazing and Stacey said: "We have raised £4,800 as of Thursday (7.5.20) and only £200 to go to hit our target of £5,000. This has all happened in less than a week, and I just would like to send a massive thank you to our wonderful community and customers it's truly amazing and it's giving me strength to push forward. Thank you so much." Editor's note: The amount is higher than this now.

Capture our Key Workers

Throughout this national crisis some very important people across Milford on Sea village have kept us all going by providing services, support and doing all they can to keep everyone's spirit up.

The village Doorstep Album has had many nice pictures of people sent in from across the village (205 people so far) and the album will stand as a defiant & warm memory of this very significant and difficult time.

But... we do not have enough photos of the people that have kept the village alive in the album.

So, can you help please. When on your walk around the village can you please try and capture some photos of our key workers on their doorsteps (at a safe distance and with their permission of course.)

All that we have at the moment is the South Lawn Team and Stacey from Ray's Italian Kitchen with her family. I think we would all agree that a lot more people deserve to be included.

There are so many within the village who are supporting us; the supermarkets, the takeaway services, newsagent, butcher, fishmonger, greengrocer, florist, pharmacies, carers, nurses, council workers, teachers, emergency service workers, home bakers, volunteer groups and many more...  It would be so nice if many of them are featured in the Villagers on the Doorstep Album.

It is usual with any general request that people think someone else will do it, and then no one does!  So, if you can help please do, we would rather have too many photos than not enough. I am very sure lots of us would love the see the smiling faces of the people who have been so important to the village at this time in our history.

Please get snapping and send your photos to: please click here.

Milford Trust’s Parting Gift to Olivia Inspires

New Forest youth charity, Olivia Inspires is extremely grateful for a donation from Milford on Sea’s Barry Phillips’ Youth Trust which has just closed.

The Trust was set up in 2011 in memory of Barry Phillips, a former Arnewood School teacher who lived for many years in Milford on Sea and made a huge and lasting contribution to the village. How many realise that the Youth Club was started by Barry and it was his foresight that enabled the new Community Centre to be made possible?
Barry Phillips’ Youth Trust was set up to help young people in the Milford on Sea area realise their aspirations and gain a positive attitude to life by giving financial aid to help towards a vocation or career.

After nearly 10 years the trustees have reached the difficult decision to close the Trust and distribute the remaining money to a similar cause.

Barry’s widow, Jenny Spenser said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the money and extremely happy to hand over our mantel to Olivia Inspires and hope you can keep Olivia’s memory alive and continue to do so much to help others.”

Milford on Sea student, Olivia Burt died in 2018. Olivia Inspires was set up to allow her spirit to live on by helping young people aged 11 to 18 years, whose families live in the New Forest District Council area and who are facing financial hardship. Grants are provided to help them develop their potential in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), the arts and sport.

It's hard here, it even harder in Nepal

Life in the UK is difficult for many, and with the crisis being worldwide there is also great unreported suffering.

Freedom to Learn is a Milford on Sea based charity run by Joey & Mark Owen. The charity works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.

The charity specifically supports families in Kushadevi, Nepal and the villagers haven’t even been able to access soap to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

They also haven’t been able to work to earn enough for food or seeds to plant their crops - essential for year round income as many are subsistence farmers. As one of the local head teachers said last week: "We’re not sure what’s worse - the deadly spread of Covid-19 or or widespread famine from a prolonged Lockdown across rural Nepal.”

With next to no support from government, they are really struggling.

Joey and Freedom to Learn have set up a multi-level campaign support their students in Nepal during Lockdown

There is a Crowdfunder where people can directly and easily donate towards relief parcels, please click here

There is a 2.6 Challenge where people can also have some fun while fundraising!, please click here to see the campaign poster.

You can follow their progress on their website or Facebook page.

The amazing Milford on Sea C of E Primary School family have also been doing some amazing fundraising for this cause.

Kate Crawford (head teacher) sent pictures of some of their hard work.
  1. First is Miss Walton running 26.2 miles last week
  2. 2nd is Mr Willis with his son riding 26km everyday
  3. 3rd is Miss Walker-Arnot with her two out running 2.6km every day

The school has had links with Kushadevi School in Nepal for a number of years. Aware that families and children are experiencing really challenging circumstances due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, they decided to take on some 2.6 challenges to raise much needed money for their friends in Nepal.

The response from children and their families at home has been brilliant and shows incredible solidarity and support for our Global Neighbours

Children have taken on challenges such as running 26 minutes everyday for a week, cycling 26 km in a day, running 2.6 miles every day for a week. One little Reception child is running 26 laps of his garden every day.

The Keyworker Children that are presently at school have taken on completing a challenge every day for 2 weeks such as 26 skips, making 26 VE Day handprint flags, 26 weeds pulled up from the garden, 26 people at their VE Day Party

Staff have also challenged themselves by walking, running and cycling different distances.

If you would like to donate to this brilliant cause you can do by clicking here.

The school website also has more information, please click here

More about the charity

Freedom to Learn is a Milford on Sea based charity run by Joey & Mark Owen. The charity works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.

They do this by working collaboratively with local grass roots organisations as implementing partners. This structure is not only a legal requirement in Nepal and India, but also ensures that the work they do is locally and contextually relevant. It safeguards against wasted resources, increasing the prospect for sustained and significant impact for the communities they work with. Partners include “Rural Community Foundation Nepal” “Edulift” and “Sahasi Ketaketi” are all monitored and audited by both their National Governing Charities Body and by the Freedom to Learn team on the ground. And after working together since 2012, they know they do a fantastic job.

Freedom to Learn is also committed to raising public awareness about the importance of education and development work; facilitating and mentoring advocacy projects in both Nepal and the UK.

In many areas of the developing world education is key to lifting children and their families out of poverty. Providing adequate education is fundamental to helping young people and families gain independence and emotional and financial security, that we often take for granted.

  • As a monthly donation of any amount, at your own discretion – every pound counts!
  • As a long term commitment of £10 per month for ten years. (£1,200 for a full education)

Lost cycle light on Hurst Spit

We have read online that Simon from Fuel Hair Mechanics has lost a light off of his bike on Hurst Spit, would be nice if we could find it for him.

Here is what he wrote:

"Hi everyone, I lost my front cycle light this morning on my cycle to Hurst Castle along the stones. If anyone finds it can you post it through the security side door to my shop please. I am local and didn't buy an ice cream on my ride I promise, although it would had been a nice breakfast! Have a great day."

If you find the light, his high street shop address is below.

To read more about Fuel Hair Mechanics, please click here.

Hopefully, they will be back cutting hair in Milford on Sea soon, the shop looks amazing and whilst most of us guys are losing our hair, he does wonders for those that still have a full head of locks for him to work on!

FOOTNOTE: Simon's light has now been found and returned by a kind Milford on Sea resident. Nice to live in a village where people look out for each other.

Milford on Sea Commemorates VE Day

In these unprecedented times, Milford on Sea's planned commemorations of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day were badly affected. Badly effected, but not scuppered, as the village spirit ensured that this special occasion was marked appropriately to recognise all of the sacrifices made by so many during World War Two.

The village green saw an emotional and impeccably observed two minutes silence at 11am. People had gathered to pay their respects, and although they were apart (by the 2 metre social distancing), they were together in spirit.

Passing traffic even stopped for the silence and this was followed by a heart felt round of applause.

The morning was certainly a poignant occasion in these troubled times.

Paul French captured a really nice collection of photograph of the morning, please click here to view.

The village doorstop album also now contains photos of some people celebrating VE Day on their doorstep. To view please click here. (Keep sending your village Doorstep Photos please!)
