About Story of Milford Walking Tour

The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book: a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image.....

Stroll through the village of Milford-on-Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds, while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne.

Hear the story of the string of pearls seven yards long....

Tour Dates for your diary:
  • 11am: Sunday 17th September 2023
  • 11am: Sunday 15th October 2023

Amy achieves First Class Law Degree

A recent article in the Advertiser & Times by Roz Water, tells of the impressive achievements of Amy Cullen.

Amy Cullen
Milford on Sea mum, Amy has achieved a first class law degree and has been recognised as the highest performing student on her course.

On completing her degree, Amy was awarded with both the Stowe Family Law LLP Prize for the overall best performing student, and the Paris Smith LLP Prize for the best dissertation with a 100% score.

This is even more impressive when you discover that Amy is a single mum to four children, and she was diagnosed with, and has been managing the effects of, multiple sclerosis since 2017.

Her fortitude is clear, and this was also demonstrated when before returning to Milford on Sea, she was living with her family in the Cork Harbour region of Ireland.

The article recalls a story of how Amy became determined to do something about a toxic waste dumping site which was considered responsible for health issues near where she lived. Ultimately, Amy ended up petitioning the EU in Brussels, and was successful in her bid to get the government to clean up the toxic site.

Amy's admirable story is well worth a read, please click here.

Milford on Sea Bowls Club Finals Day

On Sunday 10th September 2023, Milford on Sea Bowls Club held their annual Club Finals Day.

Six competition finals were played over the course of the day. The weather provided a constant threat, but the event was completed on the day.

Kate Wall and Julie James competed for the Adey Plate, a Ladies’ Handicap Singles Championship, with Kate taking the winner’s trophy after a closely fought match.

At the same time, Tony Styles and Rob Perkins were playing in the final of the Young Cup. Tony, the defending champion, was unable to repeat his performance from last year and Rob was the eventual winner.

After an extended lunch to avoid the worst of the rain, the two pairs finals were contested. In the South Lawn Shield, Kate Wall and Colin Haupt played Brenda and Rhys Paddison, last year’s runners-up. Brenda and Rhys fought hard to take the winners’ trophy this year. The event is sponsored by Nikki and Tim Wedgwood from South Lawn Hotel.

On the next rink Paul Longley and Gary Anstead were matched against David Hall and Stuart Allen in the Dawson Cup, a drawn pairs Aussie-format competition. David and Stuart claimed the winner’s trophy.

During the afternoon two further singles competitions were concluded. Judy Spooner and Kate Wall competed for the Rose Bowl, with Judy taking her second win in this competition in two consecutive years. This was Kate’s third match of the day – playing in all three sessions. A test of her great stamina.

Alongside were Rob Perkins and Robert Wilcox playing for the President’s Cup. Rob made a valiant attempt to catch Robert, but Robert was the victor at the end.

The trophies for winners and runners up were presented by Paul Ware-Lane, Club President, Mrs Carole Tearle, Past Club President, Mrs Janice Perkins, Ladies Captain and Howard Farmer, Club Secretary. The South Lawn Shields were presented by Nikki from South Lawn Hotel.
