Random Seahorse Flag on Milford on Sea Beach Identified

Over this Bank Holiday weekend a random flag with simply an image of a seahorse & crown, appeared on a flagpole on the seafront by the Hurst Road car park nearest The White House in Milford on Sea.

After a while speculating that it might be a marking of breeding grounds for these fascinating sea creatures, or an an area for exotic sea fishing..., a knowledgeable neighbour of ours, who is an experienced sailor, identified the flag as being from the Royal Ocean Racing Club.

It transpires that the flag was marking The Myth of Malham finish line between the flagpole and the green north channel buoy. This gruelling sailing race is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC).

The Myth of Malham race had started when the first of an impressive RORC fleet of yachts set sail from Cowes at 9am on Saturday morning. The non-stop race was from Cowes to the Eddystone Lighthouse (just off Plymouth) and back over the bank holiday weekend. The first 100 miles of the race mirrored the start of the Rolex Fastnet Race and ultimately the race covered around 235 nautical miles.

All of the racers who completed The Myth of Malham had crossed the line during Sunday night and by Monday morning the flag had gone as quickly as it had arrived.
