On Sunday 10th September 2023, Milford on Sea Bowls Club held their annual Club Finals Day.
Six competition finals were played over the course of the day. The weather provided a constant threat, but the event was completed on the day.
Kate Wall and Julie James competed for the Adey Plate, a Ladies’ Handicap Singles Championship, with Kate taking the winner’s trophy after a closely fought match.
At the same time, Tony Styles and Rob Perkins were playing in the final of the Young Cup. Tony, the defending champion, was unable to repeat his performance from last year and Rob was the eventual winner.
After an extended lunch to avoid the worst of the rain, the two pairs finals were contested. In the South Lawn Shield, Kate Wall and Colin Haupt played Brenda and Rhys Paddison, last year’s runners-up. Brenda and Rhys fought hard to take the winners’ trophy this year. The event is sponsored by Nikki and Tim Wedgwood from South Lawn Hotel.
On the next rink Paul Longley and Gary Anstead were matched against David Hall and Stuart Allen in the Dawson Cup, a drawn pairs Aussie-format competition. David and Stuart claimed the winner’s trophy.
During the afternoon two further singles competitions were concluded. Judy Spooner and Kate Wall competed for the Rose Bowl, with Judy taking her second win in this competition in two consecutive years. This was Kate’s third match of the day – playing in all three sessions. A test of her great stamina.
Alongside were Rob Perkins and Robert Wilcox playing for the President’s Cup. Rob made a valiant attempt to catch Robert, but Robert was the victor at the end.
The trophies for winners and runners up were presented by Paul Ware-Lane, Club President, Mrs Carole Tearle, Past Club President, Mrs Janice Perkins, Ladies Captain and Howard Farmer, Club Secretary. The South Lawn Shields were presented by Nikki from South Lawn Hotel.
