Local school Milford on Sea Primary School pupil Tyler Pallant, Age 9, has designed the artwork for a road sweeper, following a competition with entries from over 50 pupils at the school.
The competition was run by local builders’ merchant and building materials producer New Milton Sand and Ballast (NMSB). They launched the competition with Milford on Sea Primary School in November, aiming to educate young people about the importance of recycling.
Students were asked to create a design for the road sweeper around the theme of ‘Recycling Awareness’, and all entrants were given a pair of gardening gloves made from recycled plastic bottles.
The road sweeper will not only maintain NMSB’s sites but will also help to keep the surrounding roads from Lymington, across to Wallisdown clean and tidy.
Tyler along with the runners up, Elouise Pallant, Mia Roberts and India Dowse also received a mini model of their design.
Entries were assessed by a panel of judges, comprised of Head Teacher Kate Crawford, NMSB Waste Manager Rob Wheeler, and the driver of the Road Sweeper Paul Brierley.
The competition is the latest activity in NMSB’s ongoing partnership with Milford on Sea Primary School. Over the last six months, NMSB have worked with the school on several projects, including the removal of their old swimming pool, of which the materials were then recycled through their recycling facility in Pennington. Students and teachers were invited to visit NMSB’s recycling centre in November 2023, to learn more about how the recycling process works and see it in action. Ending the project by hosting an interactive assembly about the importance of recycling and launching the road sweeper competition.
Kate Crawford, Head Teacher at Milford on Sea Primary School comments: “We have been delighted to work with NMSB on projects that support our own Global Ethos and enrich pupil’s learning experiences. The first of those projects started with the demolition of our swimming pool, where the children had the exciting opportunity to learn how waste is processed, for recycling and reuse, with our school council actually visiting the plant and seeing first hand.”
“The ‘Road Sweeper Design competition’ caused much excitement across the school, which culminated in a visit from the newly painted Road Sweeper with Tyler’s design and school logo proudly displayed on the side. It was received with very loud cheers and 320 pupils and their families will now be eagerly looking out for the truck in the local community. Thank you NMSB for bringing learning to life and helping us spread an important environmental message!”
