Milford on Sea Library Update

As users will be aware, Milford Community Library has been closed since 20th March. 

The team running the library have not been idle and have been discussing when and how they can reopen safely. Realistically, as it is in a multi-use hall, this will not be until September at the earliest.

 

In the meantime, they need to retrieve all the books that have been out on loan as Hampshire County Council will be recommencing fines for overdue items from 1st August. 

Books/CDs etc. can be posted through the library letterbox at any time (if they will fit). The library has also been open the last few Fridays for the return of larger items and will again be open for returns this Friday (31st July) from 10am until 12.30. 

If you cannot return your books by then or wish to renew them, you can do this online by clicking here. If you need a PIN for your library account, this can be obtained by phoning HantsDirect on 0300 555 1387 or by visiting Lymington or New Milton libraries. If you’ve forgotten your PIN, you can reset this online. 

The library hopes to be able to offer some kind of Click and Collect service once they reopen. Details are still being worked out, and if you would like to be kept informed, please send your name, address, and email address to mosclibrary@gmail.com and they will keep you up to date with our plans.

Sam at La Perle turns 40

Sam from La Perle turned 40 on Sunday 26th July. In true Sam style, he wouldn't take the day off but did finish early at 3pm to join friends & family on the green for a social distance celebration!

We hope he had a great time after all the hard work he had put in to support and feed the village over the lockdown period. We also thank Kerry for sending the pictures of Sam in his earlier years for us all to enjoy.

MOSHRS Podcast: All Saints' Church-Part 3

Milford on Sea Historical Record Society have launched their latest podcast, this time the subject offers more stories relating to All Saints' Church.

In 19th Century England the Anglican Church was home to two opposing forces: the Evangelical Revival and the Catholic Revival.

In the latest video podcast you can find out how these rival revivals confronted each other in Milford.

Community Centre Trustee Applications Closing

Milford on Sea Community Centre is seeking a new member to join our board of trustees. The ideal candidate will have financial experience including cash handling and banking procedures. 

Trustees meet each month and are all actively engaged in making the Centre a success.

£2000 donated to New Forest Basics Bank

Becton & District Rotary Club working with the volunteers of the New Forest Sewing for the NHS, which includes makers in Milford on sea, has resulted in a massive donation of £2,000 to New Forest Basics Bank. 

The money was raised by the masks made by the sewing volunteers being displayed at collection points around the area, including our village, for members of the public to make use of them. The masks were free but recipients were invited to make a donation in aid of a local charity. It is heartening to see that even in these difficult times the generosity of the public surpasses expectation with a sum of £2,000 being raised for NF Basics Bank.

During a visit, Chairman Oliver Stanley identified Tinned Meats, Fairy Liquid and J Cloths as being urgently required. If you can help with these or any other long dated non perishable food items then please contact the Basics Bank to discuss how you can donate the food. 

It appears to be generally accepted that the current circumstances are going to be with us for some time so demand for the services provided by Oliver and his team can only increase.

Social Groups & Clubs welcome back at South Lawn

It has been two weeks since The Cedar Tree Restaurant reopened in the Marquee and Gardens at South Lawn Hotel, and after a steady start the team are pleased to see an increasing number of familiar faces.

Owner, Tim Wedgwood has given us his thoughts; "Whilst many guests first trip out may have been a nervous experience it's reassuring to see that many keep returning. It delights us to know that our guests have the confidence to return and we appreciate the kind comments about how secure people have felt. We are blessed with so much space indoors and out and our Marquee has become very popular with small groups of up to 6 people from multiple households.

The use of our function facilities are still restricted and it is anticipated that conference and banqueting facilities will reopen for larger parties in September. So for now we have a huge function suite that seats 150 feeling very empty. 

So we have an idea which we hope will be helpful. We appreciate there are many small groups and committees of larger groups that are fed up of Zoom meetings and want to get together. Committee meetings are vital for the many social groups and organisations to get back together, so:

Cornwallis Suite - Before Covid changes

We have arranged our function room for how we anticipate our regular clubs might meet when restrictions are lifted. The Cornwallis Suite which seats 150 in normal times is laid with 8 round tables of 6 and a top table of 2 all one metre plus spaced. The rules now allow for a table of up to 6 people inside but from no more than 2 households. So assuming that no members of a committee live in the same household each table can accommodate 2 people. From now up until September we want to make this facility available to any club or committee whether they normally meet at the hotel or not. So if you have a meeting you would like to organise 18 people from 18 households can meet here and up to a maximum of 30 can meet if enough of you share households or social bubbles. 

Just call the hotel to check availability and make your booking and on the day please ensure your organiser arrives in good time ahead of the rest of the guests so we can open up and brief you. All attendees should arrive direct to the Cornwallis suite entrance as access is not available through the hotel. We will even provide tea and coffee facilities with a discretionary honesty box. We will not staff the room but are available to help if needed. 

There is no charge for this facility which we hope will help all our important groups start to get back to normal."

Milford in pictures during Lockdown

Graham Wiffen is a retired semi-professional photographer and during lockdown he has been taking some stunning photographs of Milford on Sea, Keyhaven and the New Forest.

Graham has always been interested in photography and has some early vague memories of mixing chemicals and working in a friends darkroom in his early years. He was also a member of camera/photographic club in Essex in the 80's and produced his own prints for a while.

After years in the corporate world, he moved on to sailing around the world, capturing many thousands of images. He then returned to the UK and has regularly had his images in the local and National press and various glossy magazines and even received a 'Commended' for one of his images in the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.

With the Lockdown in place Graham started a new gallery, showing images of the local area to help those in complete lockdown, who couldn't get out and about to enjoy this stunning area.

Thoughts from Simon Digweed of Fuel Hair Mechanics in the village:

On July 4th our local holiday parks, campsites, cafés, restaurants, bars and barbers opened their doors to the general public for the first time since lock down began. But are they the same businesses we know? 

As businesses and their customers start to emerge from an unprecedented event both professional and personal to them, there is legislation in place to adhere to which has changed the way they can operate. 

They have lost revenue, employees, and in some cases had to close completely. The already strained local independent high street shop is under increasing pressure to exist at all, there has never been a more critical time to support local businesses and encourage UK tourism than now. They are doing everything in their power to still provide a service to the community, let's get behind them. The battle to rebuild has just begun. 

Barbershop businesses who previously operated a sit and wait system have had to implement an online booking system. Legislation dictates salons have to keep a record of clients information (name and number) as a track and trace method in case of cross infection. Shops not complying can face heavy penalties and even closure. Fuel Hair Mechanics in Milford on Sea (a barbershop of notoriety both locally and across Hampshire) were ahead of the pack in this respect and had already implemented an established operating system accessed through their website, Instagram and Facebook page. A business must always look ahead to survive and being ahead of the game is a distinct advantage in our recently adapting world. 

So no matter what the size of the business, or the sector, we all face similar challenges that we can support each other with. Be it just a bit of advice on the minefield of legislation, the recommendation of a local supplier or simply providing some PPE, let’s get together and help each other to ensure that we are all here to face whatever challenges may come our way in the future and stand together as local businesses.

Editors note: Hopefully all of our local shops will get all of the support they need, they have had things tough enough already.

Milford Baptist church services return

Milford Baptist church is starting worship services again.

After almost exactly four months of online worship, the Baptist church is restarting services on Sunday 19th July at 10.30am. 

The plan is to start the service outside the front of the church, but if (when?) the weather lets everyone down the service will move into the building. It won’t be quite the same as before lockdown, as obviously social distancing must be maintained, refreshments can't be served, and sadly singing is not allowed. 

The church aims to live-stream the services so that those who have to keep shielding, or who simply don’t feel ready for that kind of gathering just yet, will still be able to join in. And all services are, as usual, open to all!

Add recipes to the Lockdown Cookbook

We have been contacted by Jonathan, an artist working with SPUD in Sway (a community arts charity) on a project called The Lockdown Cookbook, which is a cookbook for, and by, the people of the New Forest, particularly Sway, Milford on sea & Lymington. 

Jonathan is looking to get in touch with members of the community who would be interested in contributing recipes to the cookbook, as well families and younger members of the community who would like to cook one of these recipes. 

The cookbook is inspired by his great-grandmother's handwritten cookbook, which was passed on to him, and contains all sorts of weird and wonderful recipes collected from the wireless, family, friends and - most intriguingly - strangers. It's a community cookbook written before, during and after the war. 

Nowadays, in a period of scrambling around for flour and eggs in the supermarket, Jonathan wants to create a culinary time capsule of a country kept indoors by the pandemic, and the food they ate. 

He is keen to reach as many people as possible in all generations, but especially older, more isolated people, who might not have Facebook, or email.

Local inventor makes good

Roger Davison lives in Milford on Sea and is a very good amateur cook. Seven years ago he was looking for a means of cooking chicken in a better way, and finding nothing on the market decided to invent his own system. The result was the COQOPAN® a new and fully patented method of cooking chicken in half the normal time by steaming the bird from the inside whilst roasting it on the outside all at the same time. 

After years of design, prototypes and testing he finally developed a successful working model which he presented on the Channel Four television programme “Buy it Now for Christmas in October 2019”. On the show were buyers from Amazon, Lakeland and JML who after his demonstration all gave the product the thumbs up and placed orders on, the spot. Roger came away from the show with orders valued at £50,000. 

Since then things have gone from strength to strength with the COQOPAN®, largely through Amazon, is now selling not only in the UK but throughout Europe and The Coqopan® Company is now featured on YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and LinkedIn. 

And what of Roger himself? Well he is not an engineer but a professional musician, who plays in theatre orchestras in London and but for Covid-19 would be the leading keyboard player for Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre in London.

Sean to Swim the Channel - & Cakes!

Sean Willson, Milford on Sea resident and manager at Everton Hyundai will be swimming the English Channel for two fantastic charities in August. (It was originally July.) - Also, if you like cakes, there is some good news at the end of this article!

Sean explains how he comes to be taking on such an arduous challenge: When I was 15, I was lucky enough to have taken part in a cross channel relay with my school. Ever since then I have had a desire to swim the same stretch of water, solo. I had a chance meeting at a charity talk, where I started talking to someone sat on our table. He went on to tell me about his channel swim, this then spurred me on to pursue my dream of doing the same. So in 2019 I took the plunge and booked my swim across the channel. I started training, swimming in lakes, sea, swimming pools and paddling pools! Taking my training seriously I swam 11 miles in Lake Windemere and have had specialist intensive sessions with Swim Canary Wharf. My training was going well and I was making good progress when Corona Virus struck and lockdown kicked in. This left my dream hanging in the balance, would I be able to swim the channel or would this be another event cancelled in 2020? Good news when lockdown was relaxed I was able to recommence my training in sea locally off Milford and I am due to swim late July 2020 and have been training ever since!!

Unfortunately my fundraising events have not been able to go ahead due to social distancing, therefore I am asking you to dig deep and sponsor me! I have chosen to support The Brain Tumour Charity and The Alzheimer's Society as both charities are very close to my heart. Thanks in advance for your support!!

To further support Sean, his neighbour, Amanda Maidment who also lives in Whitby Road, is to hold a cake sale on her driveway this Saturday 11th July from 11am to 3pm at 36 Whitby Road all money raised will go to his chosen charity.

Amanda is an accomplished cake maker and no doubt there will be some delicious treats to buy and enjoy at home. Just pop along!

South Lawn reinvents itself again

Tim has given us another exciting update on new dining services from South Lawn Hotel and Cedar Tree restaurant:

We have spent the last couple of weeks preparing to re open our doors to the public and we are delighted to welcome so many new and familiar faces back over the 1st weekend with a soft re opening that allowed us to iron out any niggles with our Covid secure operating procedures. 

South Lawn is blessed with loads of space and we have designed an amazing venue to keep our guests as safe as we can. Each of the three areas we have focused on are broken down into Inside, Outside and Marquee. Dining and lounge furniture is all spaced to conform to government guidelines and we have achieved the Visit England We're Good To Go status alongside many of the venues in the New Forest Area, Our aim is to provide an as near normal experience as possible with due consideration to being as Covid secure as possible. In addition to the very strict cleaning protocols in place we are also using a Virucidal Disinfectant Fogging machine in public areas and guest rooms. 

Access is via the hotel reception as usual and in busy times we have a separate entrance through our Marquee. We chose to use a Marquee because it provides many of the benefits of being outside that you don't have from being in a restaurant or bar. Small groups of up to 6 are able to meet at the same table outside from multiple households. We have a number of different styles of seating in our Marquee which include Dining, Lounge and Poseur and we are very happy for small groups to join us for a sociable drink, snack or a full meal. The Marquee does provide somewhere dry if the weather lets us down but can be noisy in heavy wind and rain!

Outside we have the usual offering of dining furniture. Inside the restaurant looks very similar to before but with less tables and 1m+ spacing. Anybody is welcome for a meal, morning coffee, afternoon tea, a snack or just a drink and you can book a table in the Restaurant or Marquee or just turn up. We don't take bookings for garden tables but if you've booked a table inside and decide you prefer to sit in the garden when you arrive that's absolutely fine. 

Tables cannot be laid up formally for now so we've changed the style of our menu to suit a much more casual dining experience, all the usual offerings are included but are complimented with some less formal but very tasty dishes. The new Monday to Saturday Menu and also a Sunday Lunch Menu are available from 12noon to 8pm. (See all the menus below)

We are still really busy with deliveries and we intend to keep our 'At Home' delivery service going for as long as we can as we appreciate how important this has become to many people in our community.

For Want of a Groyne

Rachel Shattock dropped us a line to ask if we would publish her poem, we are always willing to help, so here we go:

As Rachel explains: It’s so upsetting to see the scale of the deterioration to the west of the White House. Milford’s last wooden beach huts are gone/going and the little shingle beach to the side of them is now completely washed away. The sea wall is cracked and broken in many places and the council appear to be doing nothing apart from fencing the area off, so locals and visitors can’t walk along the coastal path either. The lack of care and upkeep makes many of us sad and angry. And all for the want of a timely repair to a broken groyne!

 

FOR WANT OF A GROYNE 

For want of a good groyne the beach was lost 

For want of a beach the sea wall was lost 

For want of a good wall the frontline was lost

For want of a frontline the seafront was lost 

For want of a seafront Milford-on-Sea was lost

Hurst Castle opens on Saturday

Hurst Caste will open on 4th July and you now need to book your timed tickets in advance. 

The castle has introduced limits on visitor numbers to help keep everyone safe, and you won’t be able to visit without your booking confirmation. 

If you’re an English Heritage Member or Local Resident Pass holder, your ticket is free but you still need to book in advance.

Community Centre seeks Trustee

Milford on Sea Community Centre is seeking a new member to join our board of trustees. The ideal candidate will have financial experience including cash handling and banking procedures. 

Trustees meet each month and are all actively engaged in making the Centre a success.

La Perle continues with takeaways

Message from Sam at La Perle: 

Regretfully, we have no immediate plans to reopen as a restaurant. Being such a small venue it would not be viable to have the required social distancing in place, so we have taken the decision to continue to offer our online delivery service for the foreseeable future. 

We are also continuing to operate our Deli from the front door offering hot food, drinks etc from 11am to 8pm Mondays to Saturdays, so if you are in the village you may like to get yourself some lunch or a snack to take to the beach or the village green.
