Milford on Sea Bowls Club Open Morning 2024

Milford on Sea Bowls Club has been a prominent feature of the village since 1933. Located on the seafront, the green boasts one of the finest vistas on the South Coast with stunning views of Christchurch Bay, the Isle of Wight and The Needles. Such is the draw of the location that they attract members from New Milton, Barton and Lymington areas in addition to Milford and Everton.

The club compete in both the New Forest and Bournemouth and District Ladies’ and Men’s Leagues and are members of the Hampshire County Bowling Association. They also host “friendly” matches with clubs from further afield. In addition, they have club matches, providing both a social and friendly competitive atmosphere for their members.

A team of accredited coaches are always ready and willing to provide support, whether to a new rookie bowler or to perfect the skills of an experienced league player. These facilities are provided free of charge to members.

The outdoor season typically runs from April until the end of September each year. During Autumn and Winter there is a indoor short mat facility available to all members in the clubhouse.

Regular Club Social events are held throughout the year, both outdoors and in the clubhouse building. There is also a licensed bar available for the use of members and their visitors.

The annual open morning is on Wednesday 24th April 2024 at 10.30am to 12.30pm. Come along to find out more about this friendly Club, and have the chance to try out the game for yourself. Shoes, bowls and coaching provided.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to visit the club website – www.milfordonseabowlsclub.org – or give the Club Coach, Janet, a call on 01590 645258.

Thank You to the Co-op Milford

Our local Southern Co-op in Milford on Sea high street very generously donated Hot Cross Buns for the Christians Together Good Friday service on the village green.

Sadly the very wet and windy recent weather meant that the service was moved to All Saints’ church as the organising team had visions of people slipping and sliding all over the Green and of the chair legs sinking into the mud!

Thankfully, the hot cross buns did not go to waste, and were enjoyed in the church instead.

The All Saints' team send their warmest thanks to the team at the Co-op Milford for their delicious support.

Haley's Crab Cakes in Aldi TV Competition

Milford on Sea resident Hayley Elsdon, and founder of The Fabulous Catch Company, is competing in a TV competition to get her crab cakes stocked in supermarket chain Aldi.

Haley will be appearing in the first episode of a six part Channel 4's series 'Aldi's Next Big Thing' on Tuesday 2nd April 2024 at 8pm.

If successful, Haley could get her crab cakes stocked in 1,000 Aldi stores nationwide.

Her story of how and why the business started is intriguing. Also, the quality and sustainability of the product shines through, as does Haley's passion for what she does.

Fingers crossed that she wins.

PS: If you missed the show on the day, the episode can still be watched on Catch Up.

-------------------------
Editors Note

Spoiler Alert! Hayley and husband Herbert, presented really well in the show, and against some tough competition, and after cleverly modifying their product to suit the mass market, they won the contract to supply Aldi with 20,000 of their crab cakes. Brilliant!

-------------------------
About The Fabulous Catch Company

Hayley Elston founded The Fabulous Catch Company in 2012.

Based in Calshot, her independent fish and crab cake business, produces sustainable, British fish products.

Hayley, also known as The Cod Mother, comments on her website; "We make an exciting range of posh fishcakes, many of which have achieved a prestigious Great Taste Award. We’re raising the profile of the humble fishcake – from a rather unappetising bright orange ‘puck’ served for school dinners and in greasy chippies – into a rather splendid, healthy lunch or supper dish, with no frying tonight!"

Prior to founding The Fabulous Catch Company she had a successful career as a Food Projects Consultant, during which she developed a passion for supporting the declining fishing industry and protecting the diminishing fish stocks. And so the Catch brand was born.

Today The Fabulous Catch Company make unique fish delicacies for the retail and restaurant trade, as well as a range people can by directly. Products available to buy online include ready-to-eat gourmet fishcakes, flavoured & gluten free fishcakes, fish fingers, vegan seacakes, smoked maceral pate, and tartare sauce, all of combine traditional flavours and modern tastes.

Summer Season Spa Installed on the Village Green

Around 6am this morning, early risers visiting the village centre will have spotted a large prefabricated building being hoisted from a transporter lorry and a team firmly installing it on the top of Milford on Sea village green.

Initially it was thought that this might be connected to the Psychic Fair due to take place this Saturday.

However, when approached, the event organisers said it had nothing to do with them, and they didn't even see it coming.

It turns out, and apparently without local residents realising, planning permission had been approved by New Forest District Council in early February to install a temporary Spa & Relaxation Centre at the top of Milford on Sea Village Green.

The planning permission runs until the end of the Summer season in June.

The spa opens at 10am today, and will be open to all offering a range of beauty therapy, facial treatments, dietary advice, Swedish massage, as well as having a jacuzzi, a plunge pool and mud bath.

Amazingly, the normal planning restrictions were avoided on the basis that this is only to be a temporary structure.

Bob D'Bilda, managing director of Dreams on Wheels, the operators of what will be known as 'The Pleasure Pod' said; "We are delighted to be able to enhance the village green and bring some sunshine to a drab place".

One of the professional beauty therapists, Gloria Blusher said that she is looking forward to some of the challenges she will face.

Some other members of the 'The Pleasure Pod' Spa Team looking forward to meeting you will be; dietician Emma Royds, jacuzzi manager Lottie Bubbles, and the masseuse team of Ivor Bentitt and Dr Dan Tickles.

Anyone concerned about the temporary spa and wishing to express their objections, anger, or apoplectic rage can contact Mr I. Gottu by emailing his secretary on: avu.got-ityet@nfdc.com.

--------------------------------

PS: Saturday's Psychic Fair has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

You would have thought that they would have seen that coming?!

Grace has been at Paddle on the Green since the opening of this very pleasant café and takeaway in 2020.

Nuclear Test Medal Presentation

Colonel John de Candole MC, President the Milford on Sea Branch of The Royal British Legion, was a surprise additional guest at a family reunion for David Brockett on Sunday 24th March 2024. David was a former General Manager of The Chewton Glen Hotel.

David Brockett
Nuclear Test Medal holder
Colonel de Candole was there to present a very special gift, the Nuclear Test Medal, which is awarded to military and civilian personnel who witnessed the British nuclear tests in the 1950s and 1960s.

David Brockett served as a Catering officer in the RAF between 1957 and 1959 and was on Christmas Island during the tests in 1958.

The servicemen present at the nuclear tests were required to turn their backs to the explosion and then to turn around to witness the results.

Colonel John de Candole MC,
David Brockett & family
The fact that Colonel de Candole presented the medal was of particular note as he also wears the same medal for witnessing earlier tests in Australia.

After the surprise presentation the two veterans were able to compare their experiences surrounded by David’s family and friends.

Come along to the Monthly Social Deaf Club

The next Social Deaf Club is on Tuesday 2nd April 2024. Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome.

This informal club is a 'Pop-in' event where anyone can come into The Cave to chat & meet new people from 5pm to 8pm on the First Tuesday of Every Month.

Something people fortunate enough to have good hearing, might not realise is that social spaces are often tricky for deaf and hard of hearing people due to inconspicuous background noise.

Also, meeting other people that struggle with their hearing, or people who have some knowledge of British Sign Language, or simply meeting people who are happy to chat to deaf people, is not that easy.

Well, this is where the Social Deaf Club comes in.

Drop in to The Cave on any First Tuesday of the Month between 5pm to 8pm to join in the monthly get-togethers.

The evening is informal, and simply provides a space where people who hear well or not, can chat over a drink or Tapas. To make things as comfortable as possible, background noise is minimised with things like drinks chillers temporarily turned off.

The idea is simply to bring people together to socialise in a safe and comfortable environment.

Just drop in for drink and a chat.

Pet dogs also welcome!

The evening is hosted by Nancy Weatherson. Nancy is a local resident, a Deaf Communications Professional, and founder of FeelHear. Nancy also runs British Sign Language courses in the village for Milford on Sea residents.

Stunning Cliff Top Grape Hyacinths

There is a lot to smile about as Spring arrives, particularly in beautiful surroundings of Milford on Sea.

This excellent photograph by Cleo Conway-Bence captures a swath of grape hyacinths on the cliff top, and is the perfect reminder that summer is on the way.

Photograph by Cleo Conway-Bence

Grape hyacinths (Muscari) are a genus of perennial bulbous plants native to Eurasia that produce spikes of dense, most commonly blue, urn-shaped flowers resembling bunches of grapes in the spring. The common name for the genus is grape hyacinth, but they should not be confused with hyacinths.

Captain Crash Debut Single out now

Local band, Captain Crash & The Magic Hats, who feature two long-term Milford on Sea village residents, have released their first radio friendly single entitled 'Anywhere'.

To listen to Anywhere (For All I Know) please click here.

The single is now available on all major music platforms such as Spotify, Apple iTunes, Amazon Music and other music sources.

----------------------
About Captain Crash & The Magic Hats

The band were born after a 2012 jam session with local musician Pauly Gordelier.

Their two demo albums blend bluesy rock with 60s/70s influences, adding psychedelic flair and ethereal melodies. Imagine The Smiths jamming with Lou Reed or Pink Floyd with Radiohead whispering in their ear.

Their music carries an ecological message, but it's the raw passion and storytelling that truly resonates. This is music for the soul, straight up and authentic.

Darrell 'Crash' Kennedy is the band's singer/songwriter & rhythm guitarist. He is based in Milford on Sea, and has lived here for most of his adult life.

About the single 'Anywhere'.

The song was initially recorded with band member Arthur Rathbone Pullen, who is also owner, music producer and studio engineer at Sizzle Studios in Bournemouth, and then later remixed and remastered at HP Studios in Ringwood.

Darrell 'Crash' explains:

The song Anywhere depicts a protagonist searching for connection and meaning in a vast and possibly lonely universe. They feel insignificant, unsure of their place, and yearn for answers or companionship.

Despite facing silence and doubt, they are determined to keep searching, "traveling at the speed of sound" to reach "out there."

The song leaves the outcome open, but emphasizes the journey itself, questioning our own place in the universe and the possibility of finding connection.
