Autumn wins Gold to become a British Karate Champion

We recently published an article about the impressive Karate achievements of local Milford on Sea schoolgirl, Autumn Fry. Well, at the end of April in Durham, she won Gold at the British Four Nations Championships to become British Champion 2024 Under 18s Kumite +66kgs.

It was a great day for Autumn and her team mates from TKW Karate. Under the guidance of Sensei Jamie Jewell the club came home with 2 British Champions and 2 Silver Medalists.

After years of hard work, training, and winning medals & championships across the country, earlier this year, Autumn had become the English Karate Champion in her Kumite under 18s weight category.

She also represents England in the English Karate Federation Junior Female Kumite Team.

Autumn has lived in the village her whole life, having attended Milford on Sea Primary School, and her family certainly have strong Milford on Sea roots having been in the village for over 40 years.

What is Kumite Karate?

Kumite is a form of sparring, one of the three main sections of karate training, and involves full combat against an opponent. The competitors fight with a series of punches, kicks and sweeps to the head and body in sudden death rounds.

Ever wondered what the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society do?

As you may expect, the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society (MOSHRS) play a pivotal role in researching and documenting all aspects of the village history.

However, for members at just £10 annually, there are lots of interesting talks taking place at the meetings in All Saints' Church Hall during the year.

Each meeting contains an interesting historical talk and the opportunity to meet people from across the village. There is also an annual visit to a place of interest.

At the last meeting, which was a full house, there was a powerful MOSHRS Talk, Armada On Our Shores, by Philip St. Lawrence.

MOSHRS have the following events coming up soon:

FoSH Talk: Thursday 16th May 2024:
HMS Agamemnon: Navigating the Legend at The Gates Hall, Lymington Community Centre, SO41 9BQ.

A talk by Mary Montagu-Scott on behalf of Friends of Sir Harry. www.friendsofsirharry.org

Mary Montagu-Scott, director of the Buckler’s Hard Maritime Museum will tell the story of Lord Nelson’s favourite ship, built and launched in 1781 and after a very distinguished 28-year Naval service record, including the Battle of Trafalgar, ended up wrecked in 1809 on the River Plate off Uruguay.

Tickets: £6 for FoSH Members and £7 for Guests. Please click here.

MOSHRS Talk: Thursday 30th May 2024:
The Durotriges Project.

A fascinating subject presented by Paul Cheetham of Bournemouth University. The Durotriges Project is an intensive, multi-disciplinary investigation into the prehistoric and Roman societies of central southwestern Britain.

MOSHRS Talk: Thursday 11th July 2024:
Roman Villa & Museum, and Breamore Estate Visit.

Rockbourne Roman Villa is a unique archaeological site and museum, situated in a peaceful part of Hampshire near the historic town of Fordingbridge, on the edge of the New Forest.

Here you can walk amongst the remains of the largest known villa complex in the area, which once stood in the centre of a large farming estate. Another successful British Sign Language Course

The third 10 week Introduction to British Sign Language Course has been completed by another happy group of Milford on Sea residents.

At the final course session in April, there were lots of smiles and people enjoying using their new found signing skills.

This and previous courses have been run for 10 weeks for two groups, one on Mondays, the other on Wednesdays, with around 25 local people attending.

The aim of the course was for attendees to be able to communicate more effectively with deaf, or hard of hearing people. This valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

New courses are due to start this September 2024 where you could learn these skills too.

Social Deaf Club

5pm to 8pm on the First Tuesday of Every Month in The Cave

This informal Social Deaf Club is a 'Pop-in' event for people that are hard of hearing, or not. Everyone is welcome to come and chat over a drink or Tapas.

Something people fortunate enough to have good hearing, might not realise is that social spaces are often tricky for deaf and hard of hearing people due to inconspicuous background noise.

Also, meeting other people that struggle with their hearing, or people who have some knowledge of British Sign Language, or simply meeting people who are happy to chat to deaf people, is not that easy.

The idea is simply to bring people together to socialise in a safe and comfortable environment.

Just drop in for drink and a chat. Pet dogs also welcome!

The evening is hosted by Nancy Weatherson. Nancy is a local resident, a Deaf Communications Professional, and founder of FeelHear. Nancy also runs British Sign Language courses in the village for Milford on Sea residents.

Tyler Designs New Road Sweeper Artwork

Local school  Milford on Sea Primary School pupil Tyler Pallant, Age 9, has designed the artwork for a road sweeper, following a competition with entries from over 50 pupils at the school.

The competition was run by local builders’ merchant and building materials producer New Milton Sand and Ballast (NMSB). They launched the competition with Milford on Sea Primary School in November, aiming to educate young people about the importance of recycling.

Students were asked to create a design for the road sweeper around the theme of ‘Recycling Awareness’, and all entrants were given a pair of gardening gloves made from recycled plastic bottles.

The road sweeper will not only maintain NMSB’s sites but will also help to keep the surrounding roads from Lymington, across to Wallisdown clean and tidy.

Tyler along with the runners up, Elouise Pallant, Mia Roberts and India Dowse also received a mini model of their design.

Entries were assessed by a panel of judges, comprised of Head Teacher Kate Crawford, NMSB Waste Manager Rob Wheeler, and the driver of the Road Sweeper Paul Brierley.

The competition is the latest activity in NMSB’s ongoing partnership with Milford on Sea Primary School. Over the last six months, NMSB have worked with the school on several projects, including the removal of their old swimming pool, of which the materials were then recycled through their recycling facility in Pennington. Students and teachers were invited to visit NMSB’s recycling centre in November 2023, to learn more about how the recycling process works and see it in action. Ending the project by hosting an interactive assembly about the importance of recycling and launching the road sweeper competition.

Kate Crawford, Head Teacher at Milford on Sea Primary School comments: “We have been delighted to work with NMSB on projects that support our own Global Ethos and enrich pupil’s learning experiences. The first of those projects started with the demolition of our swimming pool, where the children had the exciting opportunity to learn how waste is processed, for recycling and reuse, with our school council actually visiting the plant and seeing first hand.”

“The ‘Road Sweeper Design competition’ caused much excitement across the school, which culminated in a visit from the newly painted Road Sweeper with Tyler’s design and school logo proudly displayed on the side. It was received with very loud cheers and 320 pupils and their families will now be eagerly looking out for the truck in the local community. Thank you NMSB for bringing learning to life and helping us spread an important environmental message!”

Telephone Box Book Share on Village Green

As you wander around Milford on Sea village centre, have you spotted the Telephone Box Book Share at the foot of the Village Green?

This classic piece of British streetwear has been maintained by the Parish Council, and some years ago it was repurposed to provide a local community Book Share. Simply take any books you fancy, or add to the library collection for other people to enjoy.

Members of the Milford on Sea Women's Institute, and local people, often give the books a tidy up as they pass.

It may now be hard to recall, but before the days of mobile phones, these red telephone boxes were the only way to contact people when you were out and about.

Those of us that are old enough, will remember putting 2p coins in the slot to make a telephone call, or if you didn't have the money, making a reverse charge call!

We also have Milford on Sea Community Library in the village.

The village library is in Park Road, Milford on Sea, SO41 0QU, and open Monday & Tuesday: 2pm to 4pm - and - Wednesday, Thursday & Friday: 10am to 12noon.

The community library offers much more than just books on loan, the library also hosts lots of activities and events for young and old. Everyone is welcome, so just pop in the meet the team or take a look below.

Random Seahorse Flag on Milford on Sea Beach Identified

Over this Bank Holiday weekend a random flag with simply an image of a seahorse & crown, appeared on a flagpole on the seafront by the Hurst Road car park nearest The White House in Milford on Sea.

After a while speculating that it might be a marking of breeding grounds for these fascinating sea creatures, or an an area for exotic sea fishing..., a knowledgeable neighbour of ours, who is an experienced sailor, identified the flag as being from the Royal Ocean Racing Club.

It transpires that the flag was marking The Myth of Malham finish line between the flagpole and the green north channel buoy. This gruelling sailing race is organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC).

The Myth of Malham race had started when the first of an impressive RORC fleet of yachts set sail from Cowes at 9am on Saturday morning. The non-stop race was from Cowes to the Eddystone Lighthouse (just off Plymouth) and back over the bank holiday weekend. The first 100 miles of the race mirrored the start of the Rolex Fastnet Race and ultimately the race covered around 235 nautical miles.

All of the racers who completed The Myth of Malham had crossed the line during Sunday night and by Monday morning the flag had gone as quickly as it had arrived.

Villagers enjoy MAF Cessna on the village green

The May Bank Holiday on Monday 6th May 2024 started bright enough for people visiting the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) Cessna 150 aircraft on Milford on Sea village green.

Although the weather became less kind as the rain fell, this did not stop many people going along to try out the pilot’s seat for size, and also trying their hand at landing the plane on the flight simulator.

The event was organised between Christians Together in Milford on Sea and Everton and Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF).

The Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is a Christian mission organisation that has pilots and planes to deliver relief workers, doctors, pastors, school books, food, medicines to isolated people in areas of the world where everything can only be safely and speedily transported by air.

There is a MAF plane taking off or landing every six minutes.
