Milford on Sea Poppy Appeal raises over £6,300

Milford on Sea resident, Carol Barnett took on the role of local Poppy Appeal Organiser earlier this year. She now knows the result of the fundraising and has sent the message below:

A message from Carol Barnett, Poppy Appeal Organiser, Milford on Sea Branch.

2022 was the first year that I have organised the Poppy Appeal in Milford on Sea, quite a daunting prospect, particularly in view of the cost of living crisis.

However I was surprised and cheered by the number of people who stepped up and volunteered to sell poppies on blustery and wet street corners, they are to be admired.

Equally when I visited numerous shops, hotels, pubs, retirement homes and nurseries in the area, I was met by many smiles and they all agreed to have a collecting box in their establishment. On behalf of the Royal British Legion, I thank them all.

The First Friday Lunch in the Community Centre and a concert at All Saints Church organised by Jan England, were both very enjoyable events, and raised substantial funds for the Appeal. In addition we received some very generous donations from individuals.

The total sum collected in Milford on Sea for 2022 was £6,322.33.

The Annual Poppy Appeal starts around October time, and Carol would be grateful if you can you spare a few hours to volunteer as a Poppy Appeal Collector?

Café, Pub or Group: Join the Chat About Scheme

Calling all Milford on Sea cafés, pubs, coffee mornings, social groups or community activities.

Chat About is a free scheme organised by Hampshire County Council, where any Milford on Sea business or organisation wishing to play a role in improving wellbeing and social connection in the community can get involved.

Covid-19 has resulted in many people in our community feeling lonely, isolated, or struggling with their mental wellbeing. We know that feeling lonely or down can affect our physical as well as our mental health.

The Chat About Scheme is designed to encourage people to come out and chat about…well, anything really! Connecting with others is one of the five proven ways to boost our wellbeing.

If you run a café, pub, coffee morning, social group or community activity; free membership of the scheme will demonstrate your commitment to customers and the wider community.

When you join you can put up a poster supplied by HCC, create a ‘Chat About Table’ or ‘Chat About Corner’ so that customers or members can clearly identify where to go to connect with others. You could also add crafts, puzzles or activities, or create a regular time slot.

Free training is also available for any volunteers or staff members.

Simon Heaps on Radio & TV

If you have read these news pages for a while you may have been following the journey of 67 year old Milford on Sea para-athlete Simon Heaps, and this week is the anniversary of him losing his second leg.

Rather than focus on the negative changes in his life, he has concentrated on his passion of playing table tennis and become a highly-ranked international para-athlete.

Radio Solent will be interviewing Simon in the Life Stories segment on the Rebecca Parker show in the near future. (This was due to be on Sunday 8th January, but has been delayed.)

He is also doing a TV shoot and interview with Lewis Coombes from BBC South on 12th January. This will be broadcast at a not yet known later date.

Having recently lost funding from two charities, Simon is looking for corporate or personal support to fund his 2023 season. If you would like to get involved his contact details are at the foot of this page. Simon has currently raised £11,720 of his £20,000 target. To find out more, or to donate, please click here.

About Simon Heaps

Simon was born in 1955 and lives in Milford on Sea. In 2019 he lost his lower right leg due to long-term Type 1 Diabetes that he has had since 13 years of age. In 2022 his left leg was also amputated.

Always an accomplished table tennis player, he has now focussed his life on becoming a successful international para-athlete.

Simon has gone on become a key player in the Great Britain Para Table Tennis Team (Class 5). He started 2022 as the Great Britain No 3 and was World Ranked 46 in his Class.

Simon's 2022 Playing Record:

March 2022: Playing in the German Bundesliga season he helped his Hamburg Club to remain top of the table along with achieving a 100% playing record, just 8 weeks after becoming a bilateral amputee.

March 2022: Playing at an International Para Tournaments in Egypt he beat the Great Britain No.2 player, only to lose out in the quarter finals to a highly ranked Egyptian para-athlete.

April 2022: Simon maintained his unbeaten season, winning 28 out of 28 matches in the German Bundesliga. He also beat a Tokyo Bronze Medallist in front of the TV cameras as Hamburg sealed the German Bundesliga Championship Trophy.

At this point Simon had not won a Medal in any International Para Tournaments in his brief para-career. How this was about to change.

May 2022: Saw Simon get to the quarter finals in the Singles at the Jordan Para Open and win the Bronze Medal in the Mens Doubles.

June 2022: He won Silver in Singles and Gold in Mixed Doubles at the Mexican Para Open in Cancun. At the following Para Wheelchair Championship in Rimini, Italy he won a Gold Medal and was crowned European Veterans (over 40’s) Champion. On his return to the UK, he went straight from Stansted to Heathrow in order to travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he won Silver in the Singles.

July 2022: In a tournament in Thailand, Simon had match point against the World Ranked No 10 but was unable to convert the opportunity into a win. This was to be the only tournament since Jordan and to the end of the season where he failed to win a Medal.

September 2022: Simon won the Bronze Medal in Greece, losing a very close match with the World Ranked No 8. Back at a Great Britain tournament he progressed until losing to the World Ranked No 4 in the semi final.

October 2022: He played in Sao Paulo, Brazil where he gained another Bronze Medal in Singles and a Bronze in the Mens Doubles. The last tournament of the season saw him compete in the Copa Costa Rica Para Open in San Jose, California where he won another Silver in Singles and won Gold in the Mens Doubles.

A fantastic run since May winning 3 Golds, 3 Silvers and 4 Bronzes.

Simon is now firmly established as Great Britain No 2 in his Class and is World Ranked No 29. This is a rise of at least 17 places in a calendar year and one that Simon has worked very hard to achieve since losing his second leg.

All of Simon's appearances for Great Britain are on a self funding basis including buying his Great Britain kit. Participating in international competitions throughout 2022 cost approaching £20,000.

Currently Simon does not have a corporate sponsor and has to rely solely on his own fundraising that includes charitable donations, raffles and draws, small sponsorship agreements and donations.

The 2023 season recommences in February and he has just about enough funds to compete in the first couple of events on the Para circuit, namely Egypt and Spain.

2023 could be massive year, if he has the funds to compete. The European Para Table Tennis Championships are being held in Sheffield in September and the IWAS (International Wheelchair Amputee Sports Federation) World Games are being held in Thailand in December.

As the current 12th highest ranked player in Europe, he is hopeful of being selected by Great Britain in Sheffield and would look to be one of the favourites to be crowned World Champion at the IWAS World Games in Thailand. None of this may be possible without additional funding.

If you can help to support Simon in any way, please contact him below.

Wartime Flying Hero Talk at MoSHRS

The Milford on Sea Historical Record Society (MoSHRS) audience recently settled down to hear Rt. Hon. Dr. Julian Lewis MP give his talk on Samuel ‘Kink’ Kinkead, the extraordinary wartime flying hero.

Dr. Lewis has published a biography of Kinkead and described the exploits which contributed to his reputation as a flying ace and his talk was illustrated by many of the original photographs he had collected for his book. His short life was marked by a poignant irony; after surviving countless wartime aerial conflicts, he died when his plane crashed into the Solent during an attempt to break the speed barrier during the peacetime of the interwar years.

(Since his talk to MoSHRS, Dr. Lewis has been knighted in the New Year Honours List for his political and public service.)

The next MoSHRS talk will be given by Will Reid, from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, at 7.30pm in All Saints Church Hall on Thursday 26th January. In addition to talks, outings and access to podcasts,  MoSHRS also offers members numerous opportunities to participate in active research of their locality. To find out moreplease click here.

We have been asked to share this message from Stacey at Ray's Italian Kitchen, and we are happy to do so:

"Firstly, Happy New year to all of our valued customers and to all of you reading this newsletter.

2022 was saw a buzz about town, which was welcome after the previous three years, but we will not mention that! Business was healthy and people flocked to Milford on Sea for most of the year right up until late November which is absolutely incredible.

2023 see Ray’s Italian Kitchen entering its fifth year of trading, we are staying positive about this coming year regardless of what is happening with the economy. People will still need a midweek / weekend treat and there is always time for coffee & cake!

In a small village, businesses rely heavily on their locals and their family their friends supporting them in order to function and thrive. I feel that we are very blessed to be in Milford on Sea as the community value this and do support each and every business which is very unique.

Ray’s is going from strength to strength thanks to you our valued customers and our amazing team whom are all proud and enjoying working at Ray’s.

Our chef Karl will have officially been with us a year in April, although Karl actually worked with us long before joining us on a full-term basis.

I am thrilled to say that Karl has well and truly settled into life at Ray’s, he is embracing Italian cuisine and loving it.

Karl has returned after having his Christmas break full of enthusiasm and ideas. This week for example Karl has made Parmesan & rosemary ciabatta, savoury egg muffins, coffee & walnut cake, jammy dodgers and tea cakes for the deli. Added new influences to the evening specials and created a lunchtime and early evening menu for you to enjoy 2 courses for £15 throughout January.

We very much forward to sharing some of our new menu ideas with you all very soon and we thank you for your continued support.

Learn to Salsa in the New Year

Join in the Beginners Salsa Classes and learn to Salsa in 2023.

The classes are friendly and supportive, with small numbers so that you get more attention and plenty of time to ask questions. It's not just about learning to dance but being part of a community. We regularly go to a local pub for a drink & chat after class.

For those who have done salsa before we teach LA/NY Cross body style salsa.

The classes are held in the Dance Studio in Milford on Sea Community Centre and run weekly on Fridays from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.

Suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience of salsa.

No partner needed. £8 per class.

Learning Salsa is a great way to meet new people and get moving to high energy music. Option to head to the pub together for a drink after class.

To book Beginners Salsa Classesplease click here - or text Danie on 07787 428714 to book your place & pay in class.

Your teacher:

Danie Louise says: I've taught and performed salsa all over the world. I have over 15 years teaching experience and I'm now a professional mindset coach - this class is all about bringing those two disciplines together - to move great and feel great!

I love teaching salsa because it's a lot of fun and I've seen how it's helped so many people (including myself) to feel more confident and happy!

My aim is to help people gain the confidence and technique to enjoy dancing salsa, while creating space to have fun and forget about life's challenges for a little while. As someone new to the area I'm also looking to meet new people and I've learned that salsa is one of the most fun ways to do that!

Naked New Year's Eve Rugby

Does anyone remember what happened on Milford on Sea Village Green on New Year's Eve 2013?

Nine year's ago we published the article below. As they say; 'Lads, will be lads' - Even in a place like Milford on Sea!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Word has reached us that there was a rather strange way for a group of local revellers to celebrate the night of New Years Eve, when a game of naked rugby took place on Milford on Sea village green at around 3am into New Year's Day.

It is understood that this is not a regular fixture, and it was difficult to know who was on which team due to the lack of any clothing. It is thought that around 8 players took part and they were all of an age that should know better!

It is unclear whether they started with any kits, or whether all of their clothes simply fell off simultaneously!

The wet and cold weather meant the match did not last the full game time, and that ample amounts of mud covered the modesty of some.

Thankfully, there were no obvious injuries, but no doubt there would have been suffering later in the day, not just from the exertion of the game, but also as a result of the extended night's celebrations.

Fortunately for us, there are no pictures that we know of. If anyone has any, whatever you do please don't send them in, just delete them from your camera!

Whilst there is a wide variety of clubs in Milford on Sea, we are unable to help anyone who may wish to get involved in any future games, as we do not believe there is a formal Naked Rugby Club to join in the village.

The full list of the night's players is unknown to us, but they know who they are!

PS: The New Milton Advertiser & Lymington Times heard about the story here, and yesterday it was published on the front cover of the 10th January edition of the newspaper for all to see. I bet there are some embarrassed lads around Milford on Sea right now!
