Helicopter lands on Needles Lighthouse

Talented local photographer, Graham Wiffen has once again captured dramatic pictures of activity near to Milford on Sea.

Having spotted that THV Galatea was moored off Milford on Sea for most of the day last Tuesday, he then observed that later in the afternoon, it launched a helicopter, joining a second, which took a close look at the Needles lighthouse.

One of the helicopters then landed on the top of the lighthouse, and if you look closely you can just about make out the guys wandering around the base of the lighthouse in their orange gear.

Background info from Wikipedia:

THV Galatea is a lighthouse tender operated by Trinity House, the body responsible for the operation of lighthouses and marine navigation aids around the coasts of England, Wales and the Channel Islands.

THV Galatea provides aids to navigation for the safe passage of mariners, including maintenance work, buoy deployment, wreck location marking and towing. She is also able to carry out additional tasks such as hydrographic surveying and wreck finding and contract commercial work.

THV stands for: Trinity House Vessel

About John Illsley

John Illsley is an English musician who rose to fame as the bass guitarist of the critically acclaimed band Dire Straits. With Dire Straits, John has been the recipient of multiple BRIT and Grammy Awards and a Heritage Award. As one of the founding band members, with Mark Knopfler, his brother David and drummer Pick Withers, John played a major role in the development of the Dire Straits’ sound.

Throughout it all, John and Mark were the only founding members to remain in the line up of Dire Straits right through from 1977 until they decided to call it a day in 1995. They still remain close friends and recently produced a programme “Guitar Stories” for Sky Arts.

During their time together as Dire Straits they sold over 120 million albums and toured extensively across the world. When Dire Straits took a couple of well earned breaks John released two albums; Never Told a Soul (1984) and Glass(1988). Both featured Mark Knopfler as a guest musician.

Dire Straits were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

As a musician John also has 8 solo albums to his credit since Dire Straits stopped touring. John will be playing all the Dire Straits classics and a few new songs from his new album VIII.

Today, John is also an accomplished artist.

New Thriller from Milford on Sea Author

Milford on Sea author, Robin Crumby has published his new thriller, CongoVariant, a prequel to the popular four-book post-apocalyptic series set at Hurst Castle in the aftermath of a fictional pandemic!

The prequel is set 20 years earlier than TheHurst Chronicles series, in 1998 in the years leading up to the second Iraq war.

Alice Bishop, an infectious diseases doctor whose family live in Yarmouth, travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo as part a WHO expedition to investigate the source of a mysterious outbreak.

Meanwhile, MI6 operative Blake Harris is searching Iraq for weapons of mass destruction as part of a United Nations inspection team. Harris must find the truth about the Iraqi weapons programme before the Allies’ patience with Saddam Hussain runs out.

Harris and Bishop discover a terrifying plot to plunge the Western World into chaos. A virus capable of changing the course of history. In the wrong hands, a bioweapon more powerful than anthrax.

If you enjoyed Robin's previous fast-paced thrillers such as Contagion, Outbreak, The Cobra Event and The Hot Zone you'll love Congo Variant.

About Robin Crumby

Robin Crumby is the British author of 'The Hurst Chronicles', a post-apocalyptic series set on the south coast of England in the aftermath of a deadly flu pandemic.

Since reading John Wyndham’s Day of the Triffids as a child, Robin became fascinated by end of the world dystopian literature and was inspired to start writing by Cormac McCarthy’s 'The Road' and Emily St. John Mandel’s 'Station Eleven'. Why? Because post-apocalyptic fiction fires the imagination like nothing else. Pondering what comes next, who would survive, what would life look like? Much of the best fiction in this popular genre focuses on brain-eating zombies or events unfolding in the USA, so Robin determined to write a story set in the UK.

His Eureka moment came wandering the shingle beach at Milford on Sea, inspired by the beauty and rich history of the Solent. Where better to survive the end of the world than a medieval castle surrounded by water? Robin spent much of his childhood messing about in boats, exploring the many waterways, harbours and military forts of the Isle of Wight, where 'The Hurst Chronicles' series is set.

Biscuit Cottage coming in May

Earlier this week we published an article from Clare & Glenn at No64 The Biscuit House about the launch of No64 Pizza, they now have news of the launch Biscuit Cottage, a one bedroom luxury holiday cottage located in the heart of the village which will be launching in May.

Clare writes:

Hello everyone, for the second time this week!!

So, we are now taking bookings for Biscuit Cottage, and my goodness, we are so thrilled and excited!!

Just in case you don’t know what Biscuit Cottage is, it’s our brand-new holiday let venture, here in Milford on Sea (right next door to No64 Biscuit House – to the right of our shop in the image provided)!

It’s a 1-bedroom, 2-storey cottage, with lounge, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom (with bath & shower), all designed and styled by me!

We’re aiming to open for business mid-May and so we’re taking bookings as of right now, we have also started the process of launching via Airbnb but we wanted to tell Milford on Sea News readers first!

Here are some images of the two completed rooms; the bedroom & the bathroom, both upstairs, downstairs will have a large lounge and a kitchen. (Pictures to follow when completed.)

The new kitchen is being fitted in the coming weeks, at which point the lounge will also be completed, dressed, and photographed for our pictorial portfolio. We hope you like what you see so far…..?

Our offer to you is £185 per night, it’s a minimum 2-night stay (booking), and we must stress (just in case you’ve not visited us) it’s a high street location (albeit in a tiny village) and so you have no allocated parking provided (there are plenty of places to park though).

We’re currently working on our full T&Cs and booking docs (as well as a new section on our website); 2 stipulations we do have, however, are no smoking and no pets please.

If anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I think that’s everything for now….?

As you can tell, I’m super-excited about this little cottage, it’s a little piece of me and I can’t wait to see what you think!

Clare

This walk starts at 11am on the Village Green and finishes on the cliff top at the Beach House with a duration of 1¾ hours.

There is no need to book, just turn up at the start point a few minutes before the walk time shown so that you can meet the guide.

About the Tour
The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book: a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image.....

Stroll through the village of Milford-on-Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne. Hear the story of the string of pearls seven yards long....

Tour Dates for your diary:

  • 11am: Sunday 16th July 2023
  • 11am: Sunday 27th August 2023
  • 11am: Sunday 17th September 2023

Lymington Town Tours

Fancy being a Local Tour Guide?

Lymington Town Tours are looking volunteer tour guides for 'The Story of Milford, and 'Voices from the Grave' walking tours in Milford on Sea village.

New Tour Guides are needed for training and shadowing our existing guides later this season and for 2024 and beyond. Walks are usually conducted from May to October and free training is provided by experienced guides, some of whom have been with the volunteer, non-profit group since the start of the project in 1986!

What does a Tour Guide do? One or two guides per group of 6 to 10 attendees set out on a designated route around the village, stopping at various points to recount highlights from the history of Milford on Sea. The walks last for between an hour and 90 minutes.

Who can apply? Anyone with a love or passion for local history who feels able to communicate that interest to a group of people in an enthusiastic manner. You do not have to be an accomplished public speaker but you do have to be able to command some facts and communicate them to the audience in a clear and concise, non-partisan manner – a good sense of humour also helps make the walk memorable for our attendees. You must be able to donate time to the project – for training and the walks themselves take place normally (May to October) on Sundays at 11am and special walks for visiting sailors or history groups are often conducted.

What do you get paid? Nothing, zero, zilch! Guides do it for the love of it and to engender some interest in local history for future generations. There is a voluntary contribution request made by each guide and a cloth bag is passed around the group to collect the donations – it is suggested that each adult contributes £5 but children are free! This money goes purely to cover administration costs for leaflet printing, picture research and laminating illustrations for presentation, badges for guides, website maintenance and insurance etc, etc.

Interested? Just email the tour team with any questions at info@lymington-town-tours.co.uk.

New Pub Sign at The Smugglers Inn

The Smugglers Inn in Milford on Sea village centre have installed a new pub sigh at the front of the pub.

The sign now features an image of The Needles and Lighthouse, in place of the original sign which featured a smuggling pirate holding a barrel of contraband.

Peter's father and grandfather were commercial artists, and he went to Portsmouth College of Art to study the Decorative Arts. The majority of his professional work was for breweries, mainly Whitbread, as a pub sign artist. Over 37 years he hand-painted over 2000 original English pub signs, primarily across South England. (Many of his signs can be seen by clicking here.) He also worked for the film industry painting backdrops and murals, working as far as Croatia and America. On retiring he turned to painting pictures for pleasure, specialising in aircraft.
