The Smugglers Inn in Milford on Sea village centre have installed a new pub sigh at the front of the pub.
The sign now features an image of The Needles and Lighthouse, in place of the original sign which featured a smuggling pirate holding a barrel of contraband.
On the side pub wall there is still an original sign which was painted by Peter J. Oldreive.
Peter's father and grandfather were commercial artists, and he went to Portsmouth College of Art to study the Decorative Arts. The majority of his professional work was for breweries, mainly Whitbread, as a pub sign artist. Over 37 years he hand-painted over 2000 original English pub signs, primarily across South England. (Many of his signs can be seen by clicking here.) He also worked for the film industry painting backdrops and murals, working as far as Croatia and America. On retiring he turned to painting pictures for pleasure, specialising in aircraft.
