Story of Milford Walk on Sunday

The Story of Milford on Sea history walk lead by Lymington Town Tours takes place this Sunday. Meet on the village green at 11am.

The Walk: "The Story of Milford - a guided walk featuring the local history of Milford on Sea. The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book: a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image.

Stroll through the village of Milford-on-Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne. Hear the story of the string of pearls seven yards long.

Note: This is a longer walk than the normal tour length, taking about 1¾ hours and including some footpaths. The footpath by the Mill Pond and woods would be unsuitable for wheelchairs.

This walk starts on the Village Green and finishes on the cliff top at the Beach House

Lymington Town Tours are a not-for-profit, volunteer-manned organisation and as such ask for a donation of £5 for each adult walker (school age children go free). This sum helps to cover admin costs.

Council can crushing

Did you know that New Forest District Council recommend that ideally cans should not be crushed?

This is because the material recovery sorting at Hampshire County Council waste disposal authority sorts out materials initially based on their shape/size, so the process is looking for an uncrushed can.

Additionally, during the process the cans need to go through a magnetic field to pick them off the conveyer belt. Sometimes when they are crushed they can be missed as they can sit beneath the reach of the magnet.

However, the material recovery facility that NFDC send the recycling to at Alton, has a second magnetic field that is set up to capture smaller metal material such as crushed cans. So they are confident that both crushed and uncrushed cans are captured for recycling.

MoSHRS hold successful Day Trip

After a gap of two years, members were delighted that Milford on Sea Historical Record Society (MOSHRS) could now hold its first 'post-Covid' annual outing.

The Day Trip held in July visited three historical sites in the Hampshire area on a day which was sunny and warm, but which broke no high temperature records.

The first venue was the National Trust property and gardens at Hinton Ampner. The property was inherited by in 1935 by Ralph Dutton, 8th Lord Sherborne, who set about creating his vision of a historic country state.

This 20th century 'Neo-Georgian' house was painstakingly rebuilt and furnished following a devastating fire in 1960. What MOSHRS members enjoyed seeing was Ralph Dutton's vision for a home and grounds which recalled the past while embracing the present.

Following lunch at Hinton Ampner, the outing party travelled south to Southwick House. This is late Georgian Grade II listed 19th century manor house, built around 1800, which now serves as the home of the Defence School of Policing and Guarding. In 1944, during the months leading up to D-Day, the house became the HQ of the Allied Supreme Commanders. Members passed through military security and first visited the D-Day 'Map Room' where the curator, Richard Callaghan, gave an absorbing lecture on Operation Overlord, the run-up to D-Day, as well as the security measures taken by the military when installing the map. Numerous members commented that they felt a "sense of history" from being in the very place where such fundamental decisions were made which were still so critical in shaping the world in which they had been brought up.

Picture Above: Some MOSHRS members loiter in the Map Room to inspect the map (made by the Tri-Ang toy company) whilst others have moved on into the room where the D-Day decision was made. It was here that, after hearing the forecast of a favourable weather window, General Eisenhower uttered his famous response; "Let's go!"

The third, and final, venue for the day was a visit to The Golden Lion public house in the village of Southwick, which had served as an Officers' Mess for not only Ike and Monty, but leaders such as Jan Smuts and, at other times, Prince Philip and Lord Mountbatten. Here MOSHRS not only enjoyed a cream tea but learnt more from the landlord, Greg, about some of the "goings on" between Golden Lion patrons and the most significant figures from Southwick House, which are not generally recorded in history books.

About Oakhaven & Will Legacies

It is because of the legacy of Phoebe and John Coates that Oakhaven Hospice exists. The land on which the Hospice sits was once their home. It was gifted to the charity in 1992 so that Oakhaven could be established and so that people at end-of-life would receive specialist care in a safe and comfortable environment. Without their vision and generosity, Oakhaven simply wouldn’t be here.

Since opening, Oakhaven has been providing free hospice care for local people and their loved ones. During that time, gifts in Wills have played a significant role.

One in four patients are supported thanks to people leaving Oakhaven Hospice a gift in their Will. Legacies help to make every moment matter for those who are facing end-of-life and they are extremely grateful for all gifts in Wills, whatever their size.

After providing for family and friends, choosing to make a gift in a Will to Oakhaven Hospice can help provide future support and care as well as being a tax-efficient way of giving to charity and supporting the community.

Results of YOUR+HEALTH Survey

As you may be aware, the Milford on Sea League of Friends conducted a YOUR+HEALTH Survey in recent months and the results can now be published.

The response for all areas of the community to this important survey on the future of health services in Milford on Sea was nothing short of outstanding.

The survey was completed by 1,485 local residents, which represents around a third of the Milford on Sea adult community. The aim of the eight-week study was to find out what residents wanted most from their Health Centre.  Top of the wish list with a vote of 91% and 92% respectively was a pharmacy and the availability locally of blood tests.  A number of services were proposed by those surveyed which included physiotherapy, mental health clinics and women’s health services.  The full results are available at: www.HealthHub-milfordlof.co.uk.

According to Paul Highett-Smith of the League of Friends Health Hub; ‘The results are a robust representation of what people would like to see provided by their medical centre. The next steps are to discuss the findings of the YOUR+HEALTH SURVEY with the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group and we will keep the local community informed of progress.’

To read the survey results please click on the image below:

About the YOUR+HEALTH Survey

The brief survey, initiated by the the League of Friends, asked for your views on the future of the Milford on Sea War Memorial Hospital.

There is a lot of history and emotion regarding The War Memorial site. Local people wanted a war memorial to help everyone remember those who served and lost their lives in WW1. It was decided that the hospital was the best way to achieve this.

The hospital hasn’t been a working hospital for over fourteen years, and has long been overtaken by the centres of healthcare excellence found at Southampton, Lymington and Bournemouth.

The aim of the survey is to understand your current and future healthcare needs to help achieve improved access to sustainable additional local health services.

One of the ways the League of Friends will be helping the community is by discussing with the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group how local needs of the population can be met.

Refuge for Ukrainian family in Milford on Sea

An article by Atonella Lazzeri in the Advertiser & Times tells the bitter sweet story of a Ukrainian family; Alex, Natalie and their children and their kind English hosts Alison and Larry Benjamin.

Escaping the horrors of war, the article tells the family's story of their last months in Ukraine and the current new chapter of their lives in Milford on Sea.

It also tells how they miss their home & country, and their gratitude to be safe thanks to a generous couple and the work of the charity New Forest Homes for Ukraine.

Milford Tennis Club supporting Ukrainian Guests

Several Milford on Sea households are generously hosting Ukrainian refugee families and Milford on Sea Tennis and Squash Club want to help.

A number of our village's Ukrainian guests are keen to play tennis and the tennis club committee has decided that as a club they would like to support them.

A newsletter has been sent out to tennis club members explaining the finer points, but they would also like to raise some money for the children of those families to attend a few coaching sessions and holiday clubs with Tennis Coach, Dan Hitchins.

As I write, the fundraising is close to the £1000 target, and it would be great to smash through it to provide even more support, and to show that we care about families forced to be so far from their homes.

Anyone wishing to contribute in getting the kids to play at the Tennis Club can do so by clicking here, or dropping a donation in an envelope marked UKRAINE and hand directly to Dan at the club.

Sustainable Milford on Sea

Local teacher and mum, Victoria Waller has launched a new website called: Sustainable Milford on Sea, which you can view by clicking here.

Victoria has built the website is to help with information about the risks and predictions of global warming, climate change and sea level rise specifically for the Milford on sea and Keyhaven area, and globally.

It is also helps to direct people with actions to reduce their individual or group emissions and restore biodiversity in the environment.

The website explains that; Much of this information is complex, confusing, and hard to find. It is difficult to understand how exactly we will be impacted, and even harder to know what to do about it! I hope that the information here helps you to navigate this and empowers you to take action, at whatever level and whatever way you can.

The site includes links where people can discover what climate change is and what the predicted local impacts we may see in areas such as: Heat, Sea levels, Climate refugees and Global heating.

There are also links to local Local initiatives groups and projects contributing to climate change mitigation and supporting adaptation.

The website is very much in its early stages and will be built up over time to keep people in touch with Milford on Sea and the climate.

Victoria also give presentations as an introduction to how climate change will impact us locally. If you wish to contact her you can do so by clicking here.

To view the website, please visit: www.sustainablemilfordonsea.uk

About Victoria

Victoria is a teacher, researcher and mother who loves Milford on Sea and grew up locally.

As she explains:
"At school I learnt about environmental issues such as pollution, human issues such as fair trade, and consumption issues such as animal-feed demand fuelling Amazon deforestation, overflowing landfill sites and then eventually fossil fuel consumption driving global warming. I always believed that when things got serious enough, people, governments and businesses would change their policies and habits to avoid complete disaster. That time is now.

The climate has changed, and is continuing to change. The impacts of this for millions of people are already catastrophic. To date, there are no indications of the kind of action that is needed to halt, let alone reverse this. At this point, I realise there is no ‘perfect’ solution, no ‘silver bullet’. I believe we all need to do everything, and whatever we can to reduce emissions and build a future that is healthy, safe and just for people and species across the planet."
