Did you know that New Forest District Council recommend that ideally cans should not be crushed?
This is because the material recovery sorting at Hampshire County Council waste disposal authority sorts out materials initially based on their shape/size, so the process is looking for an uncrushed can.
Additionally, during the process the cans need to go through a magnetic field to pick them off the conveyer belt. Sometimes when they are crushed they can be missed as they can sit beneath the reach of the magnet.
However, the material recovery facility that NFDC send the recycling to at Alton, has a second magnetic field that is set up to capture smaller metal material such as crushed cans. So they are confident that both crushed and uncrushed cans are captured for recycling.
Everyday is a school day!
