New Kids Book by Village Author

A Milford on Sea based new author, Lisa Dillane, has published her first book for children & teenagers, entitled Jensen and the Planet.

The book is about being kind to our world, and designed to discuss a serious subject without fear and through the fun of poetry.

Lisa spent many years working in a corporate environment, and she explains that: "The birth of my first grandchild filled me with wonder and inspired me to do something very different. I hope that, in a small way, this book will inspire him and hopefully many other children, to look for small ways that they can help our planet."

Keyhaven Parking Charge Plan being reevaluated

In March 2024 we reported on a Public Consultation on Parking Charges in Saltgrass Lane and New Lane, Keyhaven, and the outcome is that the plans are to be reevaluated.

A recent article in the Advertiser & Times by Roz Waters has reported that the plans for on-street parking charges are going back to the drawing board and the plans are to be re-examined.

To read the full A&T article, please click here.

The original plan was to introduce:
  • Daily on street pay & display parking spaces from 10am to 6pm.
  • No waiting at any time.
  • Motor Caravans will not be allowed to park from 8pm to 8am.
  • Parking Charges would be £1 per hour and £8 for all day.

Initially, it was thought that only the issue of overnight parking was to be addressed, but daily parking charges were in the notice, which means that there would no longer be any free parking close to the beach for locals or visitors in Milford on Sea or Keyhaven.

Locally, there is an issue with the volume of Motor Caravans parking overnight, and antisocial behaviour from a small minority. However, the initial proposals did not simply address this one issue.

As always seems to be the case, the people and families that can least afford to pay the charges will be hardest hit. A free two hour period would be a fairer action in our opinion.

Harry Redknapp coaches Milford on Sea Youth FC

Harry Redknapp was recently a prestigious visitor to Milford on Sea Youth FC. Harry had joined a club coaching session as part of 'The Sun Footie For All campaign'.

The Sun have teamed up with Tesco’s 'Stronger Starts Campaign', which funds healthy foods and activities for children, to support kids’ football clubs after shocking figures showed 94 per cent of grassroots teams were struggling in the face of soaring costs.

Milford on Sea Youth FC have been awarded a £1,000 grant which they will use for footballs, ball launchers for goal scoring drills, bibs, cones etc. for all their teams.

Under-15s coach and club secretary AJ Aitken said to The Sun: “We have to say a massive thank you to The Sun for awarding us this funding. It’s wonderful that something like this is available to teams across the country, as having a kid doing sport can cost a fortune. Allowing us to buy all the equipment we need means we can keep fees low for families, meaning parents don’t worry, and the kids can just focus on being part of a team.

AJ continued; "It also elevates it from a kickabout in a muddy field to something with structure. For the lads, having Harry come to visit has been brilliant. They’ll remember it for ever, and I know they’ll be telling all their pals at school about training with him.”

-------------------------
About Harry

Now 77 years old, Harry is known by the younger generation as a TV personality and the 2018 winner of 'I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!'

Prior to this, Harry was a professional midfield football player. His career started at 15 years old playing for Tottenham Hotspur youth team.

Still a schoolboy, in 1963 he moved to West Ham United where he broke into the first team in the 1965/66 season, making seven appearances and scoring one goal. His teammates included, 1966 World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore, World Cup Final hattrick hero Geoff Hurst, and England midfielder Martin Peters. Harry spent 10 years at West Ham United making 175 appearances and scoring eight goals.

In 1972 Harry joined AFC Bournemouth from West Ham before ending his playing career in the North American Soccer League (NASL) as player/coach with Seattle Sounders between 1976 and 1979.

Harry then moved into football management with AFC Bournemouth, West Ham United, Portsmouth, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers and Birmingham City.

In his seven years managing West Ham United they finished eighth in the Premier League in 1997/98 and a record-high of fifth the following season. The summer of 1999 also saw West Ham win the UEFA Intertoto Cup and qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time since 1980.

During his second spell at Portsmouth, he managed the side to win the 2008 FA Cup. He then went on to guide Tottenham Hotspur into the UEFA Champions League at the end of the 2009/10 season.

Romantic wartime journey from Geffen to Milford on Sea

Clare Canning, who lived and was bought up in Milford on Sea has recently share a charming and extraordinary wartime love story about her Grandmother Oma and Grandad Maurice.

Clare explains: "My grandfather's family had been established in Milford on Sea for many generations at this point, my great-grandfather having built 16 of the houses in Carrington Lane for his many children, and further back, the family being connected to the lighthouse as keepers at Hurst Castle.

Oma in the sea at Milford on Sea beach
c.1952
My Oma (Dutch for Granny) - Theodora Gloudemans - came to Milford in 1946, from the small village of Geffen in the Netherlands, which had been on the front line for much of the war, spending large amounts of time under German occupation.

Grandad was a tank commander stationed in the fields surrounding Oma's village, and was once visited by a suspicious 17 year old Theodora, who was bringing eggs and cheese to the English soldiers to exchange for a pair of military winter boots for her father. The rest, as they say, is history.

After the end of the war, Grandad was sent back to England and to Milford on Sea, where he told his family all about his beautiful Dutch girl. Despite a significant language barrier, the then 18 year old Theodora made an enormous decision, and set off across a war-ravaged Netherlands, alone, by train to the Hoek van Holland. She took the ferry to Harwich, then the train to London, where Maurice, my grandad, met her.

They travelled to Milford on Sea and were exhausted when they finally arrived in Carrington Lane, settling in with Maurice's parents, though in strictly separate rooms. Oma's visa allowed her to stay in the UK for only 3 months, so she had just a few short weeks to decide if she would make the UK, the English language, Grandad and Carrington Lane her forever home. She chose to stay, and Theodora and Maurice married only 11 weeks after she arrived in the UK.

Oma, Maurice and son Bob (Clare's dad)
Outside 18 Carrington Lane

Theodora made the impossibly brave decision to leave her entire family and everything she had known to stay here, learning the language as fast as she could. She once told me that her mother-in-law used to write a shopping list for her to take into the village, where she had to hand it over to the shopkeeper, being unable to ask for what she needed. The shame was so much that she made a point to learn English fluently as fast as she possible could, and I imagine that the majority of people who knew her would never even have guessed she wasn't English.

She is one of the bravest teenagers I can imagine, living though appalling suffering, taking huge risks on a stranger and the kindness of his family, and made Milford on Sea her home for life, until she died in January 2009.

The Geffen family still visit the village every year, and we grew up - as her grandchildren - across two nations. Milford on Sea and Oma/Grandad/our entire family story are intertwined so closely, and I wanted to share this picture I love of Oma in her youth, standing on the shores of her new home."

Th comments on the Facebook post revealed warm memories of the family from long-time Milford on Sea residents.

Many remembered 'Oma', who was locally known as Dongie. This was an adaptation of her proper name Theodora which in Dutch is shorted to Doortje. Maurice is also fondly recalled.

The family lived originally at Spesbona, then 18 Carrington Lane, and finally at 24 Carrington Lane.

To read all of the comment on the Facebook post, please click here.

This story is also now being told in Geffen in books and across social media, and Antonella Lazzeri, a reporter from the Advertiser & Times, is in contact with Clare and will be publishing an article soon, so worth watching out for that as well.
