Historic Birdlife Records of Milford (1802-2022)

Keith Metcalf’s second wildlife book; ‘The Historic Birdlife Records of Milford-on-Sea’ is on sale from 1st October. His first major book, ‘The Natural History of Milford-on-Sea’ was published in 2020 and sold-out within a year of publication.

Keith said; “This is the second book in my 4-book wildlife series with this one being devoted entirely to our local birdlife. It is an historic record covering the past 220 years”.

Keith continued; “Whilst I was researching early birding records, I noted that there was a plethora of published material going back as far as the 1800s. These historic books and magazines often contained obscure but important references to Milford’s birds.

The more I delved, the more interesting the records seemed to become. I doubted that many readers would have come across these important older books and reports so, despite the enormous amount of additional work and time this took to include, I thought it was imperative that these old, often obscure records be fully embraced and shared with everyone. It added about a year to the books writing and production, but for those with an interest in local bird history it will at least allow readers to go to a one-book source and pick out the most interesting birding information for each species recorded in our area since 1802”.

Keith went on to say; “In the 1800s I was intrigued to read about black grouse and capercaillie in the New Forest, these being raised and reintroduced by local gamekeepers. Blackcock was regarded as a ‘Royal’ bird and kept only for the King’s table. At this time it was even thought that with the spread of Scottish fir plantations in the New Forest that both black grouse and capercaillie might feel quite at home here and survive … which of course they didn’t! According to a story published in one of Colin Tubbs books, black grouse actually did survive for a time in the extreme north of the Forest until well after the 1939/45 second world war had ended.”

Keith told us that without the collaborative help from Marc Moody, Peter Hobby, the late Tony Locke and Chris Barrass (MCV & Wings) each of whom has submitted their individual records to be included in this book, the more modern birding history for Milford-on-Sea, Hurst and Keyhaven would have been so much the poorer.

Signed copies of Keith’s 400 page A4-size full-colour book are available to order online from: keithmetcalf2022@btinternet.com at a recommended retail price of £49. A free handy bookmark that gives the key to all the important nature reserve sites and the acronyms used to the older historic records is included with each order. There is also free delivery to any address in Milford-on-Sea parish (including Keyhaven, Lymore, Agarton and Downton), plus Everton, Lymington, New Milton and Barton-on-Sea. For deliveries elsewhere a £13.50 p&p charge should be added to the payment. Alternatively, books can be collected (by arrangement with Keith).

A £1 contribution for every book sold will be donated to ‘Wings’ youth group to put towards one of their visionary birding conservation projects. Online payment details will be sent upon receipt of all email orders.

Dance with The Silver Swans

Do you like to dance? Then you might like to join The Silver Swans.

These local dance lessons were started about 3 years ago by Stephanie Constantine-Smith and she now runs classes in All Saints' Church Hall Milford on Sea, including an newly introduced additional class.

The Royal Academy of Dance Silver Swans ballet classes are specially designed for older learners. Silver Swans will help improve your mobility, posture, co-ordination and energy levels.

These ballet classes have been specifically designed for the over-55s, but any adult is welcome to join, whatever their age.

Research shows that 75% of the factors affecting quality of life and longevity are related to lifestyle, while only 25% are hereditary. This means that there’s no excuse for not getting more active whatever your age. And dance in particular, can play a vital role in ensuring a longer and better quality of life.

Research also often puts dance ahead of other physical activities in the variety of health benefits that it brings. Ballet and dance are also very social activities and Silver Swans classes can be great places to meet new people with a passion and joy for life.

Silver Swans meet on:
  • Thursdays 10.45-11.45am - All Saints Church Hall, Milford on Sea. *New class
  • Mondays 12.00-1.00pm – All Saints Church Hall, Milford on Sea
Term time only.

Remembering Queen Elizabeth ll

As The Queen lays in state and the country mourns, tributes ring out from around the world.

Everyone will have their own memories of her majesty, and their own thoughts towards her passing, personally she has my upmost respect, - and it is sad that someone who has been there for my entire life, and led by example, is now missing. She made so many of us proud to be British.

It was only in June this year that the country celebrated her Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of unwavering service. It seems appropriate to once again share the 'Queens Platinum Jubilee Photo Album' featuring the community of Milford on Sea celebrating this very special occasion.

Walk for Wellness walks for Oakhaven

In August 2019, Melissa Page founded a free voluntary walking group which is still going strong and always looking for more people to join in. Walk for Wellness meet at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays starting walks from The Needles Eye Café in Milford on Sea

Melissa kept the group going during Covid doing one to ones, then pre-booked groups of 6, before returning to a 'come when you want' structure. This no doubt helped a lot of people both physically and mentally during that period.

Some members of the group are doing a charity walk for Oakhaven Hospice next Saturday 17th September. Melissa, together with members of her walking group, are keen to raise some money for the fantastic work Oakhaven do and at least 12 of the group have decided to walk locally to raise funds (and keep fit of course!).

The plan is to walk at least 100 miles between them. Melissa will be doing the full 26 miles, some of the group are doing 13 and others 10 or less, and everyone will be doing their walks on the 17th September. Everyone is keen to do their bit, and if you see them in their unmissable bright orange Oakhaven t-shirts please give them a wave and some moral support!

Melissa appreciates that people are inundated with requests for sponsorship or charity donations but if anyone does want to support them, you can visit their the link to the Just Giving page by clicking here.

About Walk for Wellness

Walk for Wellness was set up by Melissa Page in August 2019, she is a qualified personal trainer and ex-lawyer who has a real passion for fitness, and has completed 4 marathons and various charity challenges.

Melissa wanted to give something back to the community so she started free walking groups at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays for anyone who would like to go along.

The aim being for people to get some exercise and simultaneously have some social company.

The exercise is followed by a well-earned coffee and chat. The groups tend to cover 3 to 3.5miles in the hour but different speeds can be catered for (including jogging).  She always does a warm up to start and a stretch after.

Anyone that would like to join in can just turn up at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays outside the Needles Eye Café.

The importance of fitness is clear, and people’s reasons for walking varies, and Melissa is keen to see new members join in for fitness and fun.

To join the Walk for Wellness free walking group, or to find out more, please contact Melissa on pagetwo@hotmail.co.uk or 07712 164310.

Amen."

Parish Council response to Swallowfields Park Development

Response from Milford on Sea Parish Council to Pennyfarthing Homes’ online consultation relating to Strategic Site 7 - known as Swallowfields Park, Manor Road, Milford on Sea.

LOCAL PLAN
The site SS7 in the New Forest District Local Plan 2016- 2036 was adopted for ‘at least 110 new homes and public open space’. The Parish Council considers that the proposed 191 new homes will be an over development of the site resulting in a cramped environment and will put an excessive strain on infrastructure and public services.

DESIGN AND LAYOUT
The Parish Council wish to see detailed designs of the proposed dwellings. It is felt that the housing at the Swifts is lacklustre, unattractive, dated and very ordinary. There is an opportunity for this development to enhance the area rather than following a standard mass development pattern.

We note that the affordable housing is largely situated directly under the comms mast. We wish to have every assurance that this is acceptable and safe.

PRE-CONSTRUCTION
Prior to any works commencing all remedial works to the Public Open Space at the land adjacent to the school must be completed to resolve the problems with the unsatisfactory condition of this land and the consequent liability concerns from its use by the public and the school.

Provision of traffic lights at the Everton junction of B3058 and the A337 must be mandated and works commenced before construction work starts.

The Parish Council trusts that, and will look for, evidence that new-build standards will be shown to be coping with the problems of climate change and energy costs.

We welcome the provision of footpaths, cycle routes and the provision of a pedestrian access to the site from the B3058 opposite the school.

Protection of existing trees is imperative as is the retention of existing hedges. More tree planting will be welcome.

DRAINAGE
Drainage and sewerage problems are of great concern to the village. Mains sewerage from this new development must not connect to existing pipework which is already overloaded causing major issues at Keyhaven with frequent spills onto roads and into Sturt Pond. The Parish awaits proposals from Pennyfarthing on how it intends to deal with this major concern.

CONSTRUCTION PHASE
Access to the site as suggested by Pennyfarthing at the N.E. point of the site to be installed with the essential proviso that construction traffic must avoid school start of day and end of school times.

A condition must be imposed that all construction traffic parks within the site. No parking can be tolerated in Manor Road, Manor Close, Knowland Drive or other neighbouring residential roads.

The Public Open Space provided must be ready for leisure and informal play before the first residents arrive. This land must be prepared to a high standard. Councillors are very aware of the failure of the ground preparation at the neighbouring Swifts development. We wish to be advised of the specification of the Alternative Natural Greenspace.

Pennyfarthing to ensure that no topsoil is removed from the site leaving verges and green areas in poor condition. We note the inferior state of these at the Swifts development.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING
We welcome Pennyfarthing’s commitment to provide affordable housing in accordance with government policy that 50 per cent of the dwellings on the site must be within affordable housing guidelines. We regret that the largest proportion of such housing is categorised as being for first time buyers. The cost of such housing, even discounted, will be beyond the means of many people currently registered on the Homesearch Register. We ask for evidence that the provision of the affordable housing on this site will answer the registered needs of the village. We also wish to be reassured that the allocation of affordable housing will follow current regulation in that tenants or lessees will have a strong connection to the village and that, contrary to the statement in Pennyfarthing’s consultation, shared ownership will not contain the right to ‘staircase out’ so that a property will become owned completely by the resident. This provision will ensure that the less expensive housing at the site will not be sold on as second homes but will remain within the affordable housing provision.

We look for reassurance that the provision of affordable housing will not be eroded when plans are submitted.

GENERAL
We note that Pennyfarthing has adopted the name Swallowfield Park as a working title for SS7. Perhaps “Swallowfields” minus the “Park” may fit better with its neighbour, the Swifts.

The Parish Council intends to engage with more village feedback at public meetings.

Choir Leader Christine is inviting new people to join and said; We would like to welcome new members to join us as we start the new autumn / winter term. We’ll be singing out and about in our community as well as holding our very own Christmas concert in the community centre this December. Fancy being part of it? We’d love to see you.

We sing contemporary rock and pop songs and learn by ear. No previous musical skills are required and you don’t need to read music or audition.

We’re a friendly group and we love having fun, singing and socialising.
