Where am I? - Quiz Answers

If you had a go doing our 'Where am I? Quiz last week you may like to see the answers.

If you would like to see the quiz; please click here.

Some of the answers below also reveal some interesting facts behind the pictures.

1. Verveine Glass Table Tops

The multi-colour bespoke glass table tops at Verveine Fishmarket restaurant in Milford on Sea high street are just a colourful and spectacular as the food!

2. Horizontal Tree in The Beach House Garden

The extraordinary winds on the cliff top have left this tree's trunk in a horizontal position. The tree looks happy enough and battles on in the garden of The Beach House in Park Lane.

The building was originally known as Westover and built by the Siemens family (of electronics and engineering fame) over 100 years ago. Westover was later sold to William Morris a British motor manufacturer, founder of Morris Motors Limited, and described as one of Britain's greatest philanthropists. The building later became a hotel and renamed Westover Hall. Another renaming took place to the The Beach House when purchased by Dorset brewer, Hall & Woodhouse in May 2012.

3. Gable on Parish Council Building

Built in 1889, the top of the building has a Flemish style in both the gable and window surrounds. As the building has no similar designs in the village it is assumed that this was a fashion statement from the day. (In other words; I have no idea!)

4. Milford Bridge (High Street/Park Lane)

In WW2 the words 'Milford on Sea' were chiselled off of the bridge name near the top copping stones. This was done to not assist any German invaders in identifying where they were should an invasion having taken place in the war.

5. Hurst Road on seafront near the Bowls Club

Former home of Montague Dawson RSMA, FRSA (1895–1973) a British painter who was renowned as a maritime artist. His most famous paintings depict sailing ships, usually clippers or warships of the 18th and 19th centuries. (For more information, please click here.)

In later years, the house next door (now flats) was the home of Giusseppe Lund an internationally recognised metal street art sculptor & architectural metalsmith. Giusseppe created many pieces of street art, the most prestigious being the Queen Mother Gate at Hyde Park on Park Lane.

6. Noah Valentine Antiques and Collectables

Tucked in behind the high street shops, accessed by an alleyway between Ray's Italian Kitchen and Haywood Fox is a Tardis containing curios of all shapes and sizes.

7. Conical Roof on Coastal Bakery

The building and roof did not always look like this, in the past the building was square and had the village's WW1 war memorial on the side wall.

Parts of the memorial were lost when alterations took place. However, the village still has a War Memorial with the names of the fallen from the village which is used annually for Remembrance Services, and can be found within the War Memorial Hospital in Sea Road.

8. Millennium Clock

The clock was installed to celebrate the change of century in 2000. Originally, the clock was installed in the apex of the building, but around 2013 it was lowered to its current position.

9. Fossil on Cliff Top

The fossil was discovered when the beach defences were reinforced during 2021 and then sited next to the cliff top path about a 100 metres or so from The White House.

10. Random Wall between The Lazy Lion and High Street Cottage

A piece of wall that appears to have no purpose in the high street is explained in pictures from c.1900. It appears that this wall was originally part of a shop front. However, why this piece was left when it appears to have no structural merit remains a mystery.

11. Civic Award for Pill Box on Seafront

Civic Award received in 2018 recognising excellence in the build environment.

12. Ramp to Beach Promenade

The original Milford on sea beach huts were destroyed in the Valentine's Storm of 2014. In 2017 a galvanised curved steel ramp was installed around the pill box providing access the new replacement beach huts and beach promenade. The ramp fencing includes a cut out design and a couple of cut out fish!

Jessie wins Michelin Green Star Award

You may recognised Jessie Wells if you are someone who dines in Milford on Sea.

Jessie still lives in the village, but he as been on quite a culinary journey.

Having initially trained at Bournemouth catering college, he had his first experience in the top level restaurant kitchen at Verveine, learning alongside the exceptional head chef/patron David Wykes. The knowledge and experience he gained at Milford on Sea's incredible fine dining fish restaurant no doubt fired his passion for creative quality food and the exciting career that was to follow.

His subsequent restaurant journey includes working at Lime Wood Hotel with head chef Luke Holder, and then moving to Cumbria to develop his skills at the 3 Michelin star L'Enclume under Simon Rogan.

In January 2021 Michelin introduced the Green Star Award which is to highlight restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices.

In the autumn of 2020 Jessie became the head chef at Terroir in Southbourne and in 2022 his restaurant was one of only 9 restaurants in the UK to receive the Michelin the Green Star award.

Terrior considers the environment throughout its ever-changing menu which is sourced entirely from Dorset and other parts of the UK. The eco-philosophy also continues inside with its entire interior being built from recycled plastics. The main bar dining area is made from compressed recycled coffee cup lids, dining tables from yoghurt pots and foil lids, while its drinks menu board is made from charcoal.

So, what is the MICHELIN Green Star?
The Green Star was introduced to the MICHELIN Guide Great Britain & Ireland in January 2021. It highlights restaurants at the forefront of the industry when it comes to their sustainable practices. These restaurants offer dining experiences that combine culinary excellence with outstanding eco-friendly commitments, and are a source of inspiration both for keen foodies and the hospitality industry as a whole. Last year, 23 restaurants received the accolade; for 2022, that number has grown to 31.

What kind of things do Green Star restaurants do?
Every Green Star restaurant is different and works in its own unique way – but all make a difference to the world around them and act as role models to us all. Many work directly with growers, farmers and fishermen; forage in hedgerows and woodlands; grow plants and rear animals; and use regenerative methods such as no-dig vegetable gardens and successional cover crop growing. They also often go beyond environmental considerations to address issues related to ethics and wellbeing, as well as contributing to local, national or global charitable and educational projects.

What are the MICHELIN Inspectors looking for when they award a Green Star?
There is no specific formula for awarding a Green Star, as every restaurant and its surrounding region has a unique set of conditions. The Inspectors are simply looking for those at the top of their game when it comes to their sustainable practices. They consider things such as: the provenance of the ingredients; the use of seasonal produce; the restaurant’s environmental footprint; food waste systems; general waste disposal and recycling; resource management; and the communication between the team and the guests about the restaurant’s sustainable approach.

Meet new people in the Meetup CAFE

Have you heard of the Milford on Sea based social organisation called CAFE (The Coast and Forest Events Group)? The group is based in Milford on Sea and a great way to socialise and meet new people.

As explained on their website:

This Meetup group is aimed at people who live in or around the southern, coastal part of the New Forest – hence the name. We aim to help each other perk up our social lives, by making the most of the excellent leisure facilities and venues we have here locally, right on our doorsteps! If you are “Mid-Life"(!), and maybe find yourself unexpectedly single, there are times when you probably feel like going out to see a film or play or to a comedy night, for a meal, for a walk, for a drink, or even just for a coffee. There's lots to do, but it's not so much fun on your own! This could be the group for you.

People of any age and location are welcome, but please bear in mind that most events may take place within an area roughly Lyndhurst to Lymington, Christchurch to Calshot, or close by, and that activities will be focused on the "mid-life" age range. While most members are single, the group is open to sociable singles and non singles alike, (and especially to those who want to actively contribute events to the group!) So, if you want to meet new people, please join!

We hope to meet you soon at a CAFE event.

David, Julie, Jill and the other CAFE organisers.
