Messy Easter for Kids

Come and enjoy the kids activities at Messy Easter from 10.30am to 11:45am on Good Friday 29th March 2024 in All Saints' Church Hall.

The free morning is for children and their families to enjoy and explore faith together.

The Messy Easter morning will include a variety of activities for different age groups including Craft, Messy play, Stories & Songs. Hot and cold drinks available throughout.

The activities will be led by volunteers from the church with parents/carers and children taking part together.

Bring the Kids. Free entry but booking required. Please sign up all adults and children that are likely to attend with you.

The Cave announces latest dates for Live Music Events

The Cave have announced their upcoming Live Music Nights, and it looks as though we have a lot of good music to look forward to!

Entry is free, so go along to enjoy the music over a relaxing drink, and if you fancy, grab a tasty plate of tasty Tapas.

Easter Sunday 31st March - 4pm to 6pm: Ben Poore

Ben started playing acoustic guitar at the age of 16 as a way to accompany himself singing. A self-confessed campfire guitarist he has been described as a human jukebox, picking up new covers as requested by the audience. Heavily influenced by Americana and Folk music Ben's performance has been described as stripped back and upbeat.

Ben also started writing new original music in 2020.

Come down and enjoy Ben's chilled vibe, sip a few drinks, sit back and foot tap along with the rest of us, after all, it is Easter Sunday.

Free Monthly Nature Walks around the village

Did you know, that as well a leading conservation projects across the village, the Milford on Sea Conservation Volunteers (MCV) also run regular free Nature Walks for all.

Next Free Nature Walk: 24th March 2024 - 10am to 12 noon.

The Nature Walks are hosted by an experienced guide, as you visit various places around the village as you discover the nature that abounds nearby. Age ages welcome.

Creeks & Saltmarsh Winter Birding Trips

Sailing from Keyhaven Hurst Marine Ferry Pontoon, this is a boat trip around the creeks, channels and saltmarshes of Keyhaven.  

The trips are led by Keith Metcalf and an experienced guest bird expert.  

Space is limited, so pre-booking is essential.

Winter 2024 trips can now be booked via the MCV website or direct with Keith Metcalf at: keithmetcalf2022@btinternet.com.

Creeks & Saltmarsh Winter Birding Trips
  • Thursday 10th October 2024: Departing at 9am sharp
  • Friday 22nd November 2024: Departing at 9am sharp
  • Monday 9th December 2024: Departing at 9am sharp

Bookings will be confirmed by Keith (Trip Organiser) upon receipt of full payment.  A trip booklet will be sent to you about a week before the date of your trip with full details on how to prepare for these winter cruises. 

A short guide on seals will also be sent to help you identify any seals we might encounter during your trip.

Twice monthly Drop in Birding Sessions

This drop in birding sessions are open to everyone of any age, and are held from 10am to 12noon on 1st & 3rd Saturday of every month, at eith Sturt Pond Bird Hide or Keyhaven Bird Observatory. 

Local bird experts are available to help identify birds and answer questions. Scopes and binoculars are available to use. Over 120 species of birds have been recorded in recent times. 

Everyone is welcome, so why not pop in and see what you can discover?

The Keyhaven Observatory exists through the generosity of  the J & D Edgar Ltd. family with assistance from Simeon Morgan Farming, MCV has been given an occupancy licence for a redundant farm building (old pumping station) at the westernmost end of the Ancient Highway.  The brick-building has been converted into a small Bird Observatory looking up The Pans and across to the lower Avon Water.  The Pans has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its gatherings of winter wildfowl. 

Directions to Keyhaven ObservatoryFrom Milford village, turn left at the bottom of the green towards Keyhaven. Pass the Keyhaven War Memorial green on your left and The Gun Inn on your right. Turn left into the NFDC car park. Pay and park and walk towards the track that leads round the northern part of the quay towards the coastal footpath and Iley Lane. After about four hundred metres, you will see the Bird Observatory gate and Welcome sign on your left. For location, please click here

3rd Saturday of every month at Sturt Pond Bird Hide: 10am to 12noon.

Sturt Pond is a haven for swans, ducks, Brent geese, mallard, teal, shelduck & grebes. Two wooden bridges cross the stream which runs from Sturt Pond to the salt marshes. The bird hide is a hidden sanctuary to observe Keyhaven nature reserve.

Sturt Pond Bird Hide is open to the public every day from 9am to 5pm, or dusk if earlier. (Locked at night.)

Directions to Sturt Pond Bird Hide: The bird hide is located immediately behind the Lighthouse restaurant on the Hurst beach side. The bird hide can be found at the end of the concealed metal gated path between the Lighthouse restaurant and the black council sheds.

About Milford Conservation Volunteers (MCV)

Milford on Sea Conservation Volunteers are a group of local people who are dedicated to conserving and improving the wildlife and environment within the Milford on Sea and Keyhaven parish. MCV volunteers have regular tasks groups for logging, scrub clearance, balsam pulling and such like.

In 2020, MCV members were honoured to receive the country’s highest accolade for a voluntary group, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, which is equivalent to an MBE.

New volunteers, young and old are always welcome.

MCV also run other events related to local nature such as:

  • Birding for Beginner Sessions on 1st & 3rd Saturday each month.
  • Guided local Nature Walks are held on a monthly basis.
  • Creeks and Saltmarsh Boat Trip each month. Sailing from Keyhaven Hurst Ferry Pontoon. This is a boat trip around Keyhaven Creeks and Saltmarsh, led by a Bird expert. Space is limited so pre-booking is essential.

Jump aboard the Soul Train Disco on Saturday

The Soul Train Disco with DJ Dave get the vibe going from 7.30pm this Saturday 23rd March at The Bridge.

Join in for a wonderful evening of dance and fun. Playing the smooth Soul Train sounds of Motown and the 70s. 

Grooving starts at 7.30pm and all proceeds go to support the M3 Milford Monday Madness school holiday activities programme for local children aged 4-10 years. 

Everyone is invited. If you fancy, dress to impress in midi skirts, flares and colourful shirts!

Have a Stall at Hurst Castle Sailing Club Boat Jumble

Hurst Castle Sailing Club are planning to hold a Boat Jumble in their clubhouse from 10.30am to 3pm on Saturday 13th April 2024, subject to getting enough stallholders.

The club are selling 12 tables/pitches at £10 each for people to sell their no longer required boating and sailing equipment.

All proceeds would go to the RNLI in support of their 200th Anniversary and hopefully sellers will voluntarily donate a percentage of their proceeds.

There would also be a raffle and collection boxes for RNLI and refreshments to purchase.

About Hurst Castle Sailing Club

Hurst Castle Sailing Club was founded in 1938, and today it is a small, friendly family oriented club where the emphasis is on enjoyment rather than competition. A warm welcome is given to people of all ages, with a range of boating interests and levels of experience.

The Clubhouse, completed in 2013, offers modern changing facilities and a well-equipped kitchen, with splendid views out across the creeks to the Solent.

The Club caters for dinghy, yacht sailors and also canoeists. The most common dinghy sailed is the Scow numbering some forty boats. There are also Mirror, Gulls, Enterprises, Wayfarers, Skippers, Wanderers, Lasers, Toppers and others. There is a full summer sailing programme for the racing, cruising or “pottering” sailor. The Club’s Annual Regatta provides a range of events for dinghies.

For those who do not yet own their own boats, the Club has several dinghies available to members for a nominal fee.

The Club also run a programme of training, delivered by RYA-qualified instructors for both adults (beginners and improvers) and junior members.

An active social calendar takes place throughout the year, and there is a Coffee Morning every Tuesday which provides a social meeting place.

Hurst Castle reopens with 'A-MAZEing' Easter Fun

Hurst Castle reopens on Wednesday 27th March 2024 with Easter fun for kids in 'A-MAZEing Easter' running from 10am to 5.30pm on Friday 29th March to Sunday 14th April 2024.

When you take the family to Hurst Castle over this period you can enjoy Arts and Crafts, and the Easter Maze. All activities included in castle admission.

Ferry available from Keyhaven from 10am and then approx. every 30 minutes.

Captain Crackers back at The Gun Inn

The Gun Inn in Keyhaven are welcoming back local band, Captain Crackers and the Curiosities on Wednesday 27th March 2024 from 7.30pm.

Captain Crackers and the Curiosities describe themselves as: Based in the New Forest, we love frolicking through wildflower meadows, splashing across picturesque chalk streams, getting lost in ancient woodland and fetching up sweaty and bedraggled at The Gun Inn.

It sounds like this will be a unique evening of music and mayhem!
