The cafe will be open, so please just walk in anytime for a chat. Entry is free and everyone is invited.

It will also give an insight into how British Sign Language helps deaf people communicate with their silent world.

To see Rose's Dance
please click here
Few that saw it, will ever forget the stunning and highly emotional dance by Rose Ayling-Ellis, as she perfectly danced in silence on Strictly Come Dancing.

Rose is a big supporter of British Sign Language. She has been deaf since birth and uses BSL herself to communicate with the world.

She & Giovanni became Strictly Come Dancing Champions in 2021, during which they performed 'Silent Symphony', without doubt, the best ever dance on this long-running and much loved show.

------------------------------------------

Free Sign Language Open Day

Friday 8th September from 2pm to 7pm at The Bridge

It is likely that we all know someone who struggles with their hearing. A visit to the open day would give you valuable tips on the best way to communicate with them.

Everyone is welcome to pop in to this informal afternoon, whether as an individual, business or organisation.

Just imagine the smiles if you could communicate better with any deaf people you know or meet.

------------------------------------------

Deaf Awareness Course: Introduction to British Sign Language

For those that might be interested, after the Open Day, it is planned to hold an Introduction to British Sign Language Course in the village later this year.

This course will be ideal for individuals, businesses, groups or organisations.

The aim is for you to be able to communicate with deaf people, and this valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

We are fortunate to have Nancy Weatherson running the course, she is a qualified Deaf Communications Professional living in Milford on Sea, and she supports deaf and hard of hearing people throughout the UK.

In 2022 the BSL Act was passed, meaning that British Sign Language has now been recognised as a language of England, Wales and Scotland in its own right. This is a wonderful success for the deaf community.

Nancy works closely with Deaf Professionals and together they have created a Deaf Awareness Course designed to introduce some useful communication tactics to you as an individual, or your group.

If this is something that you believe that you will benefit from and enjoy, now is your chance to learn something new that will really make a difference.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Open Day, or the Deaf Awareness Course, please contact Nancy at: nancy@feelhear.co.uk. There is no obligation if you register your interest.

About Lucie and Ocean Soul Yoga

Lucie is an ocean lover and yoga enthusiast, and moved to Milford on Sea in 2020. Lucie’s family and friends are a big part of her life here, and when she’s not teaching yoga, or baby and preschool swimming, she is busy being Mum to Rubie-Lynn, Step-Mum to Madalyn and wife to American hubby Daniel.

Lucie takes great pleasure in anything ocean related. Paddle boarding, surfing, and scuba diving are all top of the list when it comes to ocean related sports and Lucie also enjoys sea swimming all-year round locally in the Solent. More often than not you will find her walking her dog Peaches or running to and from the village to pick up Rubie-Lynn.

Lucie has been teaching yoga since completing her yoga teacher training in 2016 and believes passionately in the benefits this practice can bring to the physical body as well as the mind.

She teaches vinyasa, hatha and restorative yoga, and is planning to complete a children's yoga training later this year and a pre and post natal yoga training next year.

Prior to moving to Milford on Sea, Lucie had a few transient years between the UK and America. For a number of years she was living and working in the Caribbean as a marine biologist specialising in sea turtles, whale sharks, and underwater buoy systems. She then went on to do a yoga teacher training in 2016 in Costa Rica, after which she moved to New Orleans to be with her then boyfriend, now husband Daniel, and worked offshore as a marine observer at sea on big dredge boats, and taught yoga at downtown yoga studios in New Orleans when on land.

Lucie and Daniel were married in the village last year, and are now very happily settling into life in Milford on Sea.

New Beginnings Art Exhibition by Annie Sofiano

Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd September 2023 - 10am to 5pm.

Annie's abstract art on canvas and fabric cushions will be on display to buy, or simply visit to enjoy.

About Annie Sofiano in her own words:

As a mature student studying for my BA Art History degree, I rediscovered the New York Abstract Expressionist movement and I was hooked!

I relate to the vibrancy, the innovative approach and the ground-breaking works of these artists.

These works have influenced my style of painting – colourful splashes that have many interpretations – for me they convey joy, lightness and hope – energies that may be experienced by the viewer.

My background is in interior design, working with beautiful fabrics and creating exciting colour schemes for clients.

In complete contrast my partner and I moved to Mallorca to start a small country house Bed and Breakfast. While caring for the needs of happy holiday makers I still found time to paint, gaining inspiration from the light and beauty of the Mallorca countryside and coast. The hotel also gave me the opportunity to showcase my work and the guests loved it!

We had a great time there, but after 18 years we felt it was time to return to the UK and settled in Hordle, near Milford on Sea in 2021.

As well as painting canvases, I also designed and painted the scenery for the Village Pantomime in 2023 and I am looking forward to doing next years' scenery backdrops.

At last I feel that I have the time to devote to my art, exploring and developing new ideas.

I am happy to accept commissions. Just give me an idea of colours and we can go from there.

More Benchmarks around Milford on Sea Village

Last week we published an article about a Mystery Symbol on Lazy Lion Wall in Milford on Sea high street.

It transpired that the symbol of an 'arrow with a horizontal line above' is an Ordnance Survey Benchmark (BM) and a means of marking a height above sea level.

Local historian, Bob Braid then informed us that similar Benchmarks were on the derelict White Horse Pub, All Saints' Church, and other locations around the village.

Bob's interest now sparked, he set out, with a hint of a challenge, to photograph Benchmarks on his walks around the village.

Bob told us; "Consulting my collection of 1970s editions 1:2500 scale OS maps there were 19 benchmarks plotted around Milford & Keyhaven, including the Red Lion and White Horse (the 1939 edition maps are the latest ones available on the National Library of Scotland website and there are marks on those that don't appear on the 1970s ones and vice versa).

Of the 19, five are on walls of houses that would only be visible by going onto private property, so I haven't verified those are still there.

Similarly, there should be one on the road-facing wall of the oldest part of the school and I haven't gone there.

Excluding the Red Lion & White Horse, of the remaining 11, 8 still exist; 4 in Keyhaven, one of the photos attached is poor, it was still rather gloomy when I was there and couldn't get closer than about 10 feet. 2 are heavily eroded and can only just about be made out."

As Bob say; "Probably not remotely interesting to anyone else, but it kept me quiet for a while".

Having a similar nature for trivia, I understand all about researching things that people may not have the remotest interest in!

To read the original article, please click here.

------------------------

Addendum: 23rd August 2023

Another Benchmark has been found, this time on the east wing of Hurst Castle. Unusually, this one is a metal plate.

Benchmark on the east wing of Hurst Castle

Addendum: 28th August 2023

An intrepid reader has sent the map below, which was found on the OS Benchmark Archive.

Who knew a simple  observation of a mark on a wall could lead to learning so much. Stranger still, some other peole have found this interesting!

Milford Tennis Club host LTA Open Junior Tennis Tournament

Milford Tennis & Squash Club recently hosted the 84th 'Grade 4 LTA Open Junior Tournament', with 10 players from the club competing against visiting players from Cheshire, London and the Isle of Wight.

Mixed weather throughout the week meant the event started in typical British summer weather and had a rain delay of 1.5hrs!

Luckily, the club had lots of other activities to keep the juniors engaged; board games, pool table, cards and colouring!

Once the rain stopped, the 8 years and under (Red) kicked off the action with 6 boys and 5 girls playing a round robin format. A fantastic effort by Milford member, Bertie, runner up in his first tournament.

Later on, came the 9 years and under (Orange) event which saw a mixed draw of 6 players battle a round robin to determine the winner. Once all matches were completed it saw another Milford member, William, top the standings with 4 wins out of his 5 matches.

Day two and the sun was shining, again an excellent field of players attended, some local and others travelling from Cheshire, London and the Isle of Wight.

Our third and final day saw 40 children battling it out on court. Some were taking part in their first ever tournament, others returning for a second time that week and a fair few were best friends! Congratulations to Milford member, Joey, narrowly beaten by the second seed in the 14U singles final.

The children have been fantastic ambassadors for tennis and shown great mental strength, commitment, talent and sportsmanship. A credit to themselves, their families and coaches and what is most pleasing is that 10 players on display were from our club. Coach Dan and Caitlin have been focusing on getting juniors into competition and all our players had a wonderful experience and would do it again.

Thanks to the volunteers, who without their help this tournament couldn’t go ahead; from the preparation of the courts to the steady stream of officials escorting the juniors on court, supervising and umpiring.

And of course, to referee extraordinaire John Cliff, The Trough New Forest for their delicious food and sponsors support from Hayward Fox, Solent Dental & Moore Barlow.
