Refuge for Ukrainian family in Milford on Sea

An article by Atonella Lazzeri in the Advertiser & Times tells the bitter sweet story of a Ukrainian family; Alex, Natalie and their children and their kind English hosts Alison and Larry Benjamin.

Escaping the horrors of war, the article tells the family's story of their last months in Ukraine and the current new chapter of their lives in Milford on Sea.

It also tells how they miss their home & country, and their gratitude to be safe thanks to a generous couple and the work of the charity New Forest Homes for Ukraine.

Milford Tennis Club supporting Ukrainian Guests

Several Milford on Sea households are generously hosting Ukrainian refugee families and Milford on Sea Tennis and Squash Club want to help.

A number of our village's Ukrainian guests are keen to play tennis and the tennis club committee has decided that as a club they would like to support them.

A newsletter has been sent out to tennis club members explaining the finer points, but they would also like to raise some money for the children of those families to attend a few coaching sessions and holiday clubs with Tennis Coach, Dan Hitchins.

As I write, the fundraising is close to the £1000 target, and it would be great to smash through it to provide even more support, and to show that we care about families forced to be so far from their homes.

Anyone wishing to contribute in getting the kids to play at the Tennis Club can do so by clicking here, or dropping a donation in an envelope marked UKRAINE and hand directly to Dan at the club.

Sustainable Milford on Sea

Local teacher and mum, Victoria Waller has launched a new website called: Sustainable Milford on Sea, which you can view by clicking here.

Victoria has built the website is to help with information about the risks and predictions of global warming, climate change and sea level rise specifically for the Milford on sea and Keyhaven area, and globally.

It is also helps to direct people with actions to reduce their individual or group emissions and restore biodiversity in the environment.

The website explains that; Much of this information is complex, confusing, and hard to find. It is difficult to understand how exactly we will be impacted, and even harder to know what to do about it! I hope that the information here helps you to navigate this and empowers you to take action, at whatever level and whatever way you can.

The site includes links where people can discover what climate change is and what the predicted local impacts we may see in areas such as: Heat, Sea levels, Climate refugees and Global heating.

There are also links to local Local initiatives groups and projects contributing to climate change mitigation and supporting adaptation.

The website is very much in its early stages and will be built up over time to keep people in touch with Milford on Sea and the climate.

Victoria also give presentations as an introduction to how climate change will impact us locally. If you wish to contact her you can do so by clicking here.

To view the website, please visit: www.sustainablemilfordonsea.uk

About Victoria

Victoria is a teacher, researcher and mother who loves Milford on Sea and grew up locally.

As she explains:
"At school I learnt about environmental issues such as pollution, human issues such as fair trade, and consumption issues such as animal-feed demand fuelling Amazon deforestation, overflowing landfill sites and then eventually fossil fuel consumption driving global warming. I always believed that when things got serious enough, people, governments and businesses would change their policies and habits to avoid complete disaster. That time is now.

The climate has changed, and is continuing to change. The impacts of this for millions of people are already catastrophic. To date, there are no indications of the kind of action that is needed to halt, let alone reverse this. At this point, I realise there is no ‘perfect’ solution, no ‘silver bullet’. I believe we all need to do everything, and whatever we can to reduce emissions and build a future that is healthy, safe and just for people and species across the planet."

Story of Milford on Sea Walk on Sunday

The Story of Milford on Sea history walk lead by Lymington Town Tours takes place this Sunday. Meet on the village green at 11am.

The Walk: The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book - a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image. Stroll through the village of Milford-on-Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne. Hear the story of the string of pearls seven yards long.

This walk starts on the Village Green and finishes on the cliff top at the Beach House. It takes about 1¾ hours and including some footpaths. The footpath by the Mill Pond and woods would be unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Lymington Town Tours are a not-for-profit, volunteer-manned organisation and as such ask for a donation of £5 for each adult walker (school age children go free). This sum helps to cover admin costs.

Sassy's Needs Your Bras!

Sassy's New Forest in Milford on Sea high street (between La Perle and Pickled Weasel) needs your bras!

The shop is supporting the 'Against Breast Cancer' Bra Bank campaign.

The project aims to prevent old bras from ending up in landfill by collecting and then sending them to a recycling company who then pay 'Against Breast Cancer' for them. The bras are then sold to small market businesses in African countries creating jobs and supporting the local economy. In these communities, something as simple as wearing a bra, suggests wealth and influence which helps prevent women being attacked and abused.

This money raised by Against Breast Cancer is used for breast cancer research.

So ladies, please don't bin your bras, recycle them at the Bra Bank in the shop.

About Sassy's New Forest

The shop offers comprehensive selection of bags, clothing and accessories which combine the joy of colour and exciting design.

Formerly known as Beyond The Skin Handbags, Sassy’s new venture in Milford on Sea, owned by Sarah Fitzgerald, is in addition to stores in Lyndhurst and Ringwood, as well as their range being available online through their website.

Milford Girls Cricket Victory at The Ageas Bowl

Milford on Sea Primary School continued its extraordinary month of sporting achievements by winning the Girls Dynamos Cricket Hampshire County Final at the Ageas Bowl on Tuesday 28th June.

Having won the New Forest qualifying event a few weeks earlier, a squad of 10 from the Milford Girls Cricket Team travelled to the Ageas to play off against eight other regional winning teams from across Hampshire.

Back Row: L – R:
Georgia Barber, Pippa Mellor, Millie Bence
Maisie Barber, Kayla Phillips
Front Row: L – R:
Ellie Lane, Daisy Wills, Evie Hayward
Clover Dunn, Ellie Courts
From the first to the last ball bowled, the Milford girls were absolutely unstoppable and showcased quite outstanding skills and cricket.

The girls hit a huge 567 runs, and conceded a total of 104 over the four matches they played, outscoring each of their opponents by over 100 runs in each match.

They took 32 wickets during the day – 12 run-outs, 15 bowled and 5 caught and only lost four wickets.

Boundaries and sixes flowed with all the girls contributing and the fielding, particularly the direct hit run-outs were breath-taking to watch. Even the Ageas Bowl coaches/personnel were awestruck!

After a final match in which they took a staggering 10 wickets Milford were justifiably crowned Hampshire Champions.

All the girls learnt to play cricket during the first lockdown in March 2020, via homemade videos sent to them by their coaches. Once restrictions eased, the girls started to train in earnest at Barnes Lane Rec and have not looked back since. This year the Milford Girls Cricket Club welcomed another 15 ‘new recruits’ and the 30 strong club all attend weekly training sessions.
