Sassy's opens in Milford on Sea

Sassy's has opened in Milford on Sea high street between La Perle and Pickled Weasel.

The shop offers comprehensive selection of bags, clothing and accessories which combine the joy of colour and exciting design.

Formerly known as Beyond The Skin Handbags, Sassy’s new venture in Milford on Sea, owned by Sarah Fitzgerald, is in addition to stores in Lyndhurst and Ringwood, as well as their range being available online through their website.

Coin Purse Ukraine Appeal

Sassy's are giving anyone who donates any amount to Ukraine, in any of their shops, a free leather coin purse.

All donations go through the till, so everyone has a receipt and Sarah will then forward all money collected to the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) British Red Cross. Donations then benefit from the Government matching scheme.
On the first day they raised £22 in Milford and will forward the money at the end of each week.

Music Festival reinvents itself

The Milford on Sea Music & Arts Festival has been a much-loved community event for many years, however due to the costs and organisational work involved it is just not possible for the very small team to bring back the festival in its pre-Covid format in a short space of time.

So, it has been decided to take this opportunity to create a more ethical and greener event which supports the local businesses and creates less waste and noise with and a village size event for locals and visitors to enjoy. The week will also incorporate a 'Greener on the Green Faire'.

Venues and times are being finalized with acts being booked in venues and pubs around the village. This will help to support them post Covid and able events to run safely with predicted numbers through free/donation ticketing.

This structure is similar to Southwell or Bristol Folk festival, where the green is a focus for the stalls and pop-ups and the bands can do sets in multiple venues around the village over the week.

The current plan is to have events, music acts, restaurants with carbon footprint menus running in the venues around the village all week from Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May to Sunday 8th May. Venues will include the Community Centre,  pubs, bars, restaurants, churches and other halls.

On the Saturday and Sunday there will be food stalls, workshops and pop up acoustic sessions on the green from 11am to 5pm with bands and acts in the surrounding venues continuing into the evening.

The goal is to raise funds for local greening projects and for the local community to get together to make memories and make good things happen.

Can you spare a few hours to help?

There really aren't many people on the organising committee, so the team could really do with some help to make everything happen this year.

They would love to hear from anyone who could spare a few hours to assist with social media, sponsorship, fundraising, liaising with potential performers and gathering donations for the raffle.

If you are willing to help, Please contact: info@milfordfestival.com

Would you like to perform or have a stall at the event?

Local eco based stalls, live acts, and pop-up workshops wishing to get involved are invited to get in touch. Please contact: info@milfordfestival.com

Simon seeks corporate sponsors for £100

As you may have read here previously, Simon Heaps represents Great Britain at wheelchair table tennis Class 5. He is 66 years of age and as result of Type 1 Diabetes, which he has had since 13 year old, he originally lost his right leg in May 2019 but recently lost his left leg on 13th January of this year.

Simon is determined for his misfortune to not stop his table tennis, although he had had to cancel playing for Great Britain in Costa Rica in December because of the ongoing complications he had with his condition.

After 3 weeks away from the table tennis table Simon resumed training and practise in February and aims to return to competitive table tennis playing for his German Bundesliga Club in Hamburg in the weekend of the 19th March. He will then be back for a few days before travelling to Cairo to represent Great Britain in the Egypt Para Open from 29th March to 2nd April 2022.

Another Bundesliga match at end of April followed by French and Jordan Para Opens in May for Great Britain.

Simon said; "Losing another leg has not dampened my enthusiasm or desire and at 66 I am as keen as ever."

Simon still an outside chance of making the Commonwealth Games team but he thinks that missing the South American tournament may have cost his place on the team.

When Simon represents the country he has to totally self fund and can only do this by his own fundraising efforts, which includes small sponsorships, charitable grants and donations. Playing International Para table tennis is not cheap as there are tournaments all around the world.

Simon's current World ranking is 46 after playing in only 3 International events and also the Great Britain No 3. "I have a lot of International experience, albeit as an able bodied athlete, as I played for England on many occasions as a Junior and Senior with the highlight of my career being European Cadet champion in 1970 back in the day! I even have to purchase my own Great Britain kit and this is where this is leading. I currently have no Corporate Sponsor and need your help to raise £5,000 please."

British Para Table Tennis has just launched their new playing and training kit as from 1st March which has to be used at all times when representing Great Britain in sanctioned International events.

For any local businesses that want to support Simon
he has an exciting sponsorship opportunity that will only cost £100.

Simon allowed to display advertising on my shirts, shorts and tracksuit when representing Great Britain.

He is looking for at least 50 businesses to support him and give a minimum of £100 (or more in multiples of £100) to have the following sponsorship opportunities and be drawn out of a hat for 3 very special, tax deductible, ways to market your company. Each £100 gets a chance (ie: £500 gets you 5 chances in the draw etc.)
  • 1st drawn - Full sponsorship on playing shirts, tracksuit and training shirts
  • 2nd drawn – Short sponsorship, tracksuit, and training shirts
  • 3rd drawn – Training shirt sponsorship
Draw will be live on Facebook and done at the end of March.

So if you believe in Para Sport and Milford on Sea residents then please contact him for further details:

Join the Milford Bluetits for a sea swim

If you have ever strolled down the seafront and seen a group of swimmers braving the water in all weathers, it may have been the Milford On Sea Bluetits.

To explain how the group works, here are some words from their Facebook page:

No club fees, registration, rules, requirements, expectations. We are an informal group of mixed gender people who just like to swim together. Some carry on throughout the winter months, some don’t. Some enter swimming events, some swim across the Channel, some meet every morning same time, same place and swim chat their way through the water. Others swim ice miles, some meet for coffee and cake, and maybe a swim or even a paddle. Our link to each other initially is the joy of challenging ourselves to potter in and around open water together throughout the year.

Please visit their Facebook page on the link below to find out more, or if you are ready to join up and enter the waves!

Kids bake cupcakes for Ukraine

As we all watch in disbelief as the horrific scenes unfold in Ukraine, two local children, supported by their dad Josh, decided they want to help in some way.

Last Saturday they ventured out in the cold, onto the village green to sell some homemade cupcakes, - and received some generous support for local businesses.

Their original target was to raise £400, but as we write the total has now reached an impressive £1,937!

----------------------------------------------

Here is how Josh described their cupcake sale on the the village green:

"I just wanted to say thank you for the overwhelming generosity and support today.

My kids Reuben and Maya are raising money for Ukraine - donating to MSF (Doctors without borders).

They were supported by their friends and members of the community.

We wanted to make a special mention of appreciation to Reuben’s school friend Seb and his Dad, Kristian who joined us on a cold Saturday morning.

Amanda Maidment and the team from The Coastal Bakery who donated the most amazing cakes… which were of course the first to go… we’ll be back next weekend for one ourselves!

Clare Southcombe-Holmes from No.64 Biscuit House for her hot water bottles and donation. You saved the kids from going blue!

Lesley and Alex Davis from the Pickled Weasel for their support and not selling cakes today.

Penny Gluning for her outstanding cakes which were loved by all and also ran out very quickly!

We raised £575 in cash in 3 hours and a further £279 from family, friends and the community on our just giving page bringing the total to £854!

At the end of the day we still had two trays of cakes left which our friend Val Chalk kindly offered to take to church tomorrow to see if we can eek towards £1000!"

Hurst Castle named in World Monuments Watch

The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has announced that Hurst Castle has been named to the 2022 World Monuments Watch, a selection of 25 heritage sites of worldwide significance whose preservation is urgent and vital to the communities surrounding them. These sites powerfully demonstrate pressing global challenges of climate change, imbalanced tourism, underrepresentation, and recovery from crisis, underscoring the need for greater action to support heritage places and the people who care for them.

Situated on a remote and exposed shingle spit which commands the Needles Passage between the Isle of Wight and the mainland, Hurst Castle is subjected to immense forces of wind and tide. In February 2021, a section of wall on the 19th-century east wing of the castle collapsed, after the sea exposed and undercut its foundations. English Heritage is hard at work on a major project to protect and bring stability to this most challenging of heritage sites, at the forefront of sea level rise and climate change.

Launched in 1996 with founding sponsor American Express, the Watch is announced every two years and includes heritage places nominated by individuals and community-based organizations across the globe. The program has been a proven tool for raising awareness of sites in need of protection and galvanizing action and support for their preservation. To date, WMF has contributed more than $110 million toward projects at more than 300 Watch sites, with the visibility provided by the Watch helping communities leverage an additional $300 million from other sources.

Rob Woodside, English Heritage’s Conservation & Estates Director, said: “We’re grateful that Hurst Castle has been recognised on the World Monuments Watch as it is a great opportunity to highlight the challenge of managing heritage in the light of sea level rise and climate change. With changes in longshore drift and more frequent storms, Hurst Castle is amongst the most difficult heritage sites to protect in England, but the threat of rapid coastal erosion is also faced by heritage organisations around the world. We’re hoping, through our work, to share lessons learnt with those facing similar challenges.”

“Saving irreplaceable cultural heritage has never been more important,” said Bénédicte de Montlaur, President and CEO of WMF. “The daunting global challenges facing heritage in the twenty-first century require innovative, sustainable, and replicable solutions. By supporting communities in preserving the places they treasure most, we can strengthen social bonds and foster a greater understanding that our futures as global citizens are inextricably linked.”

Representing 24 countries and nearly 12,000 years of history, the 2022 Watch encompasses a broad range of examples of how global challenges manifest and intersect at heritage sites, providing opportunities to improve the lives of communities as they adapt for the future.

One year on from Hurst Castle Collapse

The Hurst Castle team have published an update on the situation following the collapse of the East Wing last year:

This Saturday (26th February) marks one year since the collapse in the east wing at Hurst Castle and we wanted to give you an update on the work so far.

Over the last year, 22,000 tonnes of shingle and rock armour have been transported along the spit to protect the east wing and the stabilisation of the damaged section has now been completed by English Heritage.

In the forthcoming weeks, a permanent revetment sea defence will be completed, providing protection for the next 50 years.

The next six months will see English Heritage undertake a major study, to determine the best course of action around the future repair of the breach and how best to protect the castle. During this time, the east and west wings as well as the beach in front of the castle, will remain closed for the public’s safety.

However, we’re delighted to say that the Tudor keep will be open to visitors for the season from Friday 1 April 2022, with the admission price reduced accordingly.

The daily ferry service will also begin on Friday 1 April, departing from Keyhaven at 10am and then approximately every 30 minutes.

Refreshments will be available to purchase from outside the castle entrance.

To pre-book your castle tickets please visit; www.hurstcastle.co.uk

Thank you to everyone for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back to Hurst Castle soon.
