The Official Opening & History of Milford on Sea Bowls Club

On 21st June 1933 the Mayor of Lymington bowled a silver jack down the newly-created green on Milford seafront, and Milford on Sea Bowls Club was born.

Dress code was very formal, with men in suits, gaiters and trilby hats, and ladies wearing long dresses and bonnets. The first Club President was Lt Col. W Clemson DSO.

Since that day, the Club has operated continually, save a “Wednesday afternoon only” rule during the Second World War for safety reasons. Initially the Club membership was “Men only” – supported by a few partners who came along to help with teas. This gradually changed during the War years when ladies became regular players on the green. Three beach huts provided changing rooms and storage for grass cutting equipment.

In 1947 Milford Bowls Club was one of the founder members of the New Forest Bowling Association. In 1987 the current pavilion building was built.

On 21st June 2023, the Club celebrated its ninetieth anniversary, and Paul Ware-Lane, the current Club President, led a reception for local dignitaries, bowls association representatives and local businesses, who provide much-valued support to the Club. This was followed by invitation matches with Brockenhurst, Highcliffe, Lymington and New Milton Bowls Clubs. During the late afternoon members played a fun bowls match and enjoyed a meal afterwards in a temporary marquee arranged for the extra celebration activities.

On Sunday 25th June the Club hosted Clevedon Promenade Bowls Club who are also celebrating their ninetieth anniversary this year. A “friendly” bowls match was played, followed by a BBQ for players of both teams.

Three-piece suit, gaiters and leather shoes - the player's kit has changed quite a bit since 1933!

Anne Boleyn in music comes to The Bridge

Come along to The Bridge to enjoy 'Anne Boleyn-Wolf at the Door', a musical tale of love and Tudor tragedy at 7.30pm on Friday 7th July.

Bob Whitley (guitars and mandola) and Lee MacKenzie (cello) take us back to the 16th Century and the story of the triumph and tragedy of Anne Boleyn.

Anne Boleyn holds King Henry VIII in thrall for six years and supplants Katherine of Aragon as Queen of England on the promise that she will bear King Henry a son and royal heir.

In a Tudor court of scheming courtiers, religious fervour and feuding families all are fighting for the King’s favour in a deadly battle of destinies and dynasties.

Written and composed by Bob Whitley. Performed by Bob Whitley & Lee MacKenzie

Entry: £12. Buy ticket in advance, or pay on door. Bar open on night.

Milford on Sea named in Most Expensive Seaside Locations

HampshireLive News have reported that data from Rightmove has revealed that two New Forest villages have been named among most expensive seaside locations for house buyers. One of these villages being Milford on Sea.

The top five most expensive seaside locations in the UK based on average 2023 house asking prices are: Sandbanks, Poole, Dorset: £2,028,948 - Canford Cliffs, Poole, Dorset: £1,219,804 - Milford on Sea, Hampshire: £764,859, Barton On Sea, Hampshire: £617,793 and Padstow, Cornwall: £616,578.

It comes are little surprise that many people would wish to live in this delightful village situated in this glorious part of the world. However, this does have a downside, as the property prices are out of reach for many of our young families and people.

I realised that, when younger we may have had to move away from the area of our family home to get our first property (as I did). But, it just feels that the affordability gap is now wider then ever, and with soaring interest rates, the limited property opportunities for young people is now is sad to see.

Milford Tennis & Squash Club History

Many of us may pass the Milford Tennis & Squash Club in Lucerne Road, Milford on Sea, but do you know the club's history?

The club actually started as Milford Country Club in 1927 and became a member of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in 1935. Although tennis has always been the major sporting activity at the club, in the early years croquet and hockey were also played.

In 1936 the first squash court was built on the site and in 1950 the Squash Club, previously a separate club, merged with the Country Club. The club originally had three grass courts and four hard courts and, during these early years, the members largely played social tennis with a limited number of matches being arranged with other local clubs.

The club purchased the freehold of its 1.8 acre site in Lucerne Road in 1945.

Milford on Sea has always been a popular venue for junior tennis players and has since 1938, hosted one of Hampshire's largest Junior Tennis Tournaments.

In the late 1990‘s, the Club changed its focus to include competitive tennis, thus providing opportunities for members of all abilities to participate in internal tournaments as well as in matches with neighbouring clubs.

In 2001 the Club changed its name to the Milford Tennis and Squash Club and subsequently obtained the services of a full time professional coach.

In 2007/8, the Club carried out major improvements to the Clubhouse which included providing new changing rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities as well as refurbishing the whole of the premises. The full cost of £140,000 was met from club funds.

Unfortunately, at 5.25pm on Boxing Day 2009, a devastating fire destroyed approximately 50% of the Club premises, sparing only the new kitchen and squash courts.

Crews totalling 20 firefighters battled the blaze for two and half hours. Almost half of the single-storey sports facility was scorched by the fire and the whole building suffered smoke damage. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the fire.

In a little over a year, the Clubhouse was totally rebuilt using the money from the insurance claim, with an additional £29,000 from club funds being used to improve and upgrade the facilities. The new Clubhouse was formally opened in February 2010 by Mark Cox, the former Davis Cup tennis player, and today the Club is fortunate to have a large function room, and lounge bar capable of hosting events for up to 60 people.

The management of the club is in the hands of the Executive Committee, which consists of a President, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and representatives of each of the Club’s main sections. The Club is run entirely on a voluntary basis and depends on the participation of a large number of the over 600 members. Social events are organized throughout the year, and both internal and open tennis tournaments held regularly. In addition to this, there are lots of informal events for children.

Racketball, squash, table tennis, ridge, mah-jong and have also become important activities enjoyed by club members.

The club has seven high quality floodlit artificial grass courts which are much admired by visiting players, two heated squash/racketball courts with viewing gallery, bar and lounge, disabled facilities and more.

Milford Tennis and Squash Club is family friendly, and all activities can be played with friends, family, or played competitively in different leagues and events.

New members are always warmly welcomed. Pop down and take a look!

About Friends of NCF

In 2007 the founders of Friends of NCF, Steve and Liz Jennings went to Kampala. Whilst there they met some inspirational local Ugandans who had begun a small mission teaching slum children and supporting their families. They returned home determined to help the children and families living in the slum community in Namuwongo and ‘Friends’ was born.

Support started with the sponsorship of children in secondary education and then developed into fundraising for a school building. As the project continued to grow, ‘Friends’ began to finance a feeding programme to help the undernourished children receive a meal during their school day.
