Hurst Spit Land For Sale

A surprising listing has appeared on the Right Move website, showing that an area of Hurst Spit Land at Keyhaven is for sale.

The land comprises of approximately 9 acres on Hurst Spit, plus a further 1.5km of shingle bank jointly owned with Hampshire County Council. The land has a Guide Price of £200,000 for the vendors share.

The land once featured coastguard cottages and a pub which were demolished around 1985. The image of the newspaper cutting to the right tells the story.

It is understood that the land for sale comes under the control of the New Forest National Park Authority and conservation groups, and that no new structures can be put on the land.

As you may expect, the land for sale doesn't include Hurst Castle!

Seals swimming in Sturt Pond

Whilst out for a run on a glorious August summer morning last week, Katie Leanne came across two inquisitive seals swimming in Sturt Pond.

Taking a break in her run, Katie captured a video of these wonderful creatures enjoying themselves.

A delight to see. We are so lucky to live in such a glorious place.

Keyhaven Art Exhibition starts on Monday

It is probably no surprise that the natural beauty of the Milford on Sea coastline and surrounding countryside creates inspiration for many local artists. For most of the year they are hidden away quietly creating works with their brushes and this is the time of the year they emerge to show us the results of their efforts.

The exhibition is Free Entry and has refreshments available in aid of Keyhaven Sea Scouts.

Just pop along to view the art, and if you fancy many pieces are for sale.

MCCG becomes Milford Volunteer Drivers

Milford on Sea Community Care Group (MCCG) has been renamed to Milford Volunteer Drivers (MVD)

The MVD volunteer drivers provide a valuable service in transporting anyone in the village who may struggle to get to a medical appointment.

Since recommencing after the Covid shutdown, the demand for the service continues to grow, which in turn means they require more volunteer drivers to help keep up with demand.

Supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community is a very rewarding and valuable role.

As a volunteer driver you decide when you are available (Any time you can spare will help). Volunteer drivers are paid 50p per mile towards their motoring costs and personal liability insurance is arranged for you.

To get involved or for more information please contact Will on 07716 118914.

To book a journey, please call: 01590 641700

History of the group
The Milford Community Care Group was founded in 1982 by two women from All Saints’ church who recognised villagers’ need for reliable transport to medical appointments. From these small beginnings the Group expanded into the Registered Charity it is today. At its peak the Group was driving 40 people a week to medical appointments. In 2022 the group was renamed to Milford Volunteer Drivers (MVD).

Straight Banana at Folk Night

Milford's very own 'Girl Band' Straight Banana are performing at the Folk Night at 7.30pm on Thursday 11th August

If you like live folk music, then a night out at Milford Folk Club could be just the thing for you.

Held every Second Thursday of the month at the Community Centre, the next evening being Thursday 9th June.

The evening is hosted by Bill Hesp and floor singers welcome.

Bill Hesp

Tickets: £4.50 on the door or in advance from the CC Box Office

The bar opens at 7.15pm and evening ends 10.30pm'ish.

About Milford Folk Club

Milford Folk Club was established in 2007 – more or less with a wing and a prayer. The organiser hadn’t been inside a folk club since the smoky, dingy, hand over ear sessions of the 1960s but had always loved traditional music, both folk and blues.

So, it was with these 60s type back room of pubs / clubs that she remembered and therefore set about running the new Milford Folk Club along the same lines.

We couldn’t replicate the smoky, dingy atmosphere but we did have converted portakabins and beer!

So much support was enjoyed from other clubs, although at that time there were few outlets for acoustic music – not so thirteen years on.

Milford Folk Club was so fortunate to attract the Goodthyme Brothers, Jim Palmer and Bill Hesp.

Bill has stayed the course and is now our regular host and all time walking encyclopedia of folk knowledge: he knows who wrote and recorded everything.

Bill organises the evenings – usually a couple of songs from him, welcome floor singers and guest singer.

In 2010 the folk club moved into the new Community Centre in Milford on Sea – quite posh, really.

The club meets on the second Thursday of each month and still usually follows the format of host, floor singers and guests.

We try to keep the entrance price down to £4.50 although occasionally have to charge a little more if we brave it and book expensive guests.

The folk club is also very pleased to organise the occasional special evening in partnership with Lymington Folk & Blues Club.

Our room has a stage, brilliant lighting and sound systems if needed and we are always keen to listen to all sorts of music. One exciting ‘spin off’ is the regular Blues evenings organised by Bob Long.

The acoustic/traditional scene locally seems to be thriving and, despite many other venues now operating locally, Milford Folk Club often attracts an audience of around 60 or more.

Our guests always say what a great venue it is, what great audiences Milford provides – and we would add how lucky we are to have so much local talent who come along, support the club by singing a few numbers and of course how lucky we are to have a great venue and a great audience.

Story of Milford Walk on Sunday

The Story of Milford on Sea history walk lead by Lymington Town Tours takes place this Sunday. Meet on the village green at 11am.

The Walk: "The Story of Milford - a guided walk featuring the local history of Milford on Sea. The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book: a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image.

Stroll through the village of Milford-on-Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne. Hear the story of the string of pearls seven yards long.

Note: This is a longer walk than the normal tour length, taking about 1¾ hours and including some footpaths. The footpath by the Mill Pond and woods would be unsuitable for wheelchairs.

This walk starts on the Village Green and finishes on the cliff top at the Beach House

Lymington Town Tours are a not-for-profit, volunteer-manned organisation and as such ask for a donation of £5 for each adult walker (school age children go free). This sum helps to cover admin costs.
