Seals at Hurst Castle

Hurst Castle had some delightful visitors last week. Who doesn't smile when you see seals relaxing or at play.

Bird spotting notes by Peter, taken from Hurst Castle Website

Here are a few notes from recent visit. Winter visitors still with us; spring visitors arriving soon.

  • Brent Geese – around 450-500. They will be heading back to Siberia soon.
  • Canada Geese – a pair seen on the marsh; look out for nesting.
  • Teal – approx. 60 (30 pairs) on Sturt Pond. The males now have pristine plumage and are very vocal with their distinctive clear ringing ‘treel’ calls. They are one of the most handsome of our wildfowl this time of year.
  • When 30 or so males are all calling together, the sound carries a fair distance.
  • Red breasted Merganser – a pair seen in the river.
  • Great-crested Grebe – 3 seen fishing in the mouth of the river; one in full summer plumage.
  • Little Egret – 4 seen across the area, possibly more in the creeks
  • Grey Plover – 14 counted feeding across the marsh.
  • Black-tailed Godwit – 24 counted feeding in Keyhaven Harbour at low tide.
  • Dunlin – estimated between 450 – 500 feeding in the creeks across the patch.
  • Mediterranean Gulls – 5 on Sturt and 1 on the marsh. Slightly larger than the Black-headed Gulls with a blood-red bill. Listen out for their distinctive call, a rising and falling note, similar to a nasal ‘yeah’.
  • Special rare bird seen: a Shore Lark has been seen on the inside of Hurst Beach, south of Cut Bridge; discovered end of January; last seen 17th February. Can be easily overlooked among the shingle.

Gin of the Month at The Cave

The Cave in Milford on Sea village centre have launched their Gin of the Month for March 2023.

Sing Gin is Distilled in small batches, with a unique blend of seven beautiful botanicals which harmonise to create a rare and tantalising freshness with distinct floral undertones.

In The Beginning... Sing Gin's founder, Ian installed a little copper pot still in his cellar, surrounded himself with botanicals and began experimenting. After recreating his favourite gins and getting the hang of which botanicals worked best together, he developed a recipe that captured the spirit of his beloved Yorkshire Dales, and won his family’s approval too.

Sing Gin is now made in the Dales village of Kettlesing. They let the botanicals steep overnight inside Bella, their steel and copper still (named after their first family dog). Then the grape spirit and botanicals are distilled in 50-litre batches. Small batches offer higher quality control. Four hours later, the gin is ready to enjoy.

Juniper, mint, orange peel and flax are among the seven top-quality botanicals Sing Gin uses. Flax is especially dear to to them as it is an historic Yorkshire crop, and they grow the flax ourselves. Rather than using whole botanicals, they crush all of theirs by hand with a large mortar and pestle. Extracting the oils in this way helps them to achieve their signature strength of flavour and aroma.

Sing Gin is crafted from grape-based spirit rather than grain. Grape delivers a silky smoothness that, in Ian's opinion, grain can’t quite match. Grape was actually an ingredient in the world’s very first juniper spirits back in the 13th century, so it’s a nice nod to tradition.

Cliff Top Path Closed/Open Confusion

A few days ago we published that it appeared the cliff top path from Milford on Sea to Barton was open once again, as the barriers had moved and the path was freely accessible from Milford on Sea.

However, a recent visitor to the cliff top has said that the fences with the no access notifications are once again in place across the footpath on both sides.

That got us wondering if someone had simply moved the barriers out of the way to access the path, and this had given the impression the path was open once again.

It has today been confirmed that unfortunately, the cliff top path between Milford on Sea to Barton on Sea currently remains closed.

NFDC estimate that the cliff path could re-open in a few weeks’ time, subject to the erection of some new fencing on the path.

We will let you know when the path is reopened.

Local History Just Got Bigger!

This week, the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society (MOSHRS) has launched the second of its Local History Lives! suite of search aids - online access to a Names Directory which is being filed with over 90,000 records of people and places with connections to Milford on Sea.

These records have been drawn from historical lists of names such as Censuses, Parish Rate Books and Tax records. For the researcher, lists are like gold-dust providing an historical context to a person or place. But, like gold prospecting, they can take a great deal of researching. The MOSHRS Names Directory takes some of that hard graft away.

If you are unsure of the spelling of the name of the family or place then you can make use of wildcards where a “?” can mean any letter you don’t know. Having isolated a source, the researcher may contact the relevant repository such as the Hampshire Record Office and examine the original document (or facsimile).

Funding for Local History Lives! has come the Hampshire Archive Trust, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Parish Council and Hampshire County Council, as well as from MOSHRS.

Local History moves forward in jumps – new sources are uncovered, new topics are researched, old topics are reassessed – it is a constantly changing landscape. Local History Lives! allows us to move with these changes, as new lists are uncovered you will find them in our Names Directory.

Local History Lives! provides us with an ever-widening window into the past.

About the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society
