Ray's Italian Kitchen launches Beach & Garden Menu

Ray's Italian Kitchen in Milford on Sea, have launched a Beach & Garden Menu to add their already extensive pizza and pasta takeaway menu.

There is a new Friday Lunchtime Menu with Flatbreads / Ploughman's boxes to takeaway eat on the beach or in your garden. You can also add fries, ice cream, ice lollies and even a bottle of wine. You can pre-order on Wednesday for pick up on Friday.

Ray's can also cater for you and your friends/family on Wednesday & Friday Evenings so you can concentrate on catching up. The comprehensive 'Social Distancing' menu will feed 6 people for £50.

Walk for Wellness Revisited

With lockdown restrictions being relaxed a little now is the time to think about getting outdoors for more exercise with some social interaction and boosting your immunity with some fresh air. Walk for Wellness/Jog for Joy is a free walk or jog group that Melissa set up last year for the community with twice weekly meetings on Mondays and Wednesdays. 

Now small groups outside are permitted Melissa has decided to restart the sessions from Wednesday 3rd June, but to comply with the Government guidelines the groups will now be limited to 6 people in total each time and of course they will have to observe the social distance rule. 

Each group is open to walkers or joggers – the joggers can go on ahead and double back so they will still benefit from the company of the others. 

Initially the groups will meet at 10am on Mondays and Wednesdays meeting outside Needles Eye Café. If there greater demand Melissa may add additional slots. 

All are welcome but to effectively limit the numbers you need to book by contacting Melissa by clicking here or text/call: 07712 164310.

About the Sessions

The purpose of the regular free sessions is to help people of any age keep fit, as well as to have some fun social interaction doing what is generally acknowledged as a very effective health improver. While the group is exercising there will be the opportunity to pick Melissa’s brains and to discuss health generally, nutrition and exercise – and of course just have a good old natter and some socialising. 

The actual walks/jogs run for about an hour (covering approx. 3 miles for the walkers). All abilities and beginners welcome and those that want to try to jog will be given some targets to reach. 

About Melissa

Melissa Page moved to Milford on Sea village in May last year and she has been regularly volunteering in the Community Centre Café. She would now like to use her particular skills in doing more for people in the village.

Melissa was a lawyer for 20 years before deciding to follow her passion for fitness and retrain as an accredited personal trainer. As a fairly inactive child and young adult Melissa, in an attempt to lose weight for her wedding, took up running and quickly became a dedicated gym bunny. She has run 4 marathons, the last of which she finished in 3 hours 37 minutes (coming 10th in her age group). Before moving to Milford she used to train people privately although she hasn’t done this since moving here. 

On arrival in Milford she completed her charitable fund raising commitment to run 50 kilometres every week for 50 weeks despite a prolonged knee injury. Over the last year Melissa realised how important running was, not only to her physical, but also her mental, health. At 51 she remains relatively fit and loves exercise, running & walking regularly with her husband. She is not intending to carry on with her personal training business for income but would love to help others in the community benefit both physically and mentally from regular outdoor activity and to enjoy some good company and chats with a group of like-minded people.

Catch Menu for this week

This week’s menu from Catch has all the fishcakes available. Where fresh stock is unavailable, we will supply the same product frozen. The lobsters were a huge success so after many requests they are on the menu again, along with the Salmon Supreme. Keeping everything lovely and summery for you. At the time of writing we do not know the market price of the lobsters. The price will be confirmed on ordering, but please assume it will be similar to last time - £22 for a half and £40 for a whole. We dare not remove fish soup right now, I think we are giving you a taste of a holiday in France that may have to wait until 2021.

The Crabbie delight this week is Crabbie Tarts – quiche for grown-ups. 

The feedback from mackerel fillets is that the beetroot remoulade is enough for 2 portions, so an extra fillet has been added for a light lunch / starter for 2 people. 

Local Watercress is still abundant, so fishcake specials are Salmon & Hampshire Watercress. 

We still have the same veggies and Jersey Royal potato salad for you. Anyone like any strawberries? Let us know.

We will telephone you on Wednesday afternoon to take payment, and confirm your delivery information. The order will be delivered Friday morning. 

Delivery is free for orders of £30 or more. For orders of less than £30 a small delivery charge of £5 is applied. 

For these local deliveries, we are switching away from our plastic packaging (it is fully recyclable I hasten to add) to our Kraft compostable packaging, which we use for our events. It goes in the freezer perfectly and will be fully labelled for you.

An enterprising group of local people have put together a 'Good News Newsletter' with the aim of keeping everyone informed and amused during this difficult time.

The Good News Newsletter has been created by Milford Library, Milford Mutual Aid Group, The Village Voice and MoS News Bulletin.

We will be publishing a copy of each edition here online and for those in the village who do not use digital communication, the Parish Council are printing some paper copies which will be available in some village shops and some distributed by volunteers.

A Soapy Family Story

We have discovered this old article from August 2013

Dr Jenny Davies has dropped us a line to tell us about another notable grave in All Saints' Churchyard, Milford on Sea.

 

Jenny writes: "My grandfather, Walter Lee is buried in Milford on Sea churchyard. He was related to Lord Leverhulm of Sunlight Soap fame. 

My grandfather's father, Frederick Foxen Lee used to help Lord Leverhulm (William Lever) when he was a lad going round Bolton selling his grocery items from his barrow in the streets near to his fathers' grocery store. (all documented in William Lever's biography; The King of Sunlight).  We still have an original bar of sunlight soap! 

My great grandfather (Frederick Foxen Lee) had married Joanna Lever, so my grandfather was a relation of William Lever himself! 

 

My grandfather Walter Lee's great Aunt, Elizabeth Foxen (nee Lever) was tayloress to Queen Victoria. 

During WW1 my grandfather (Walter Lee) served in the Royal North Lancashire Regiment. He was a gunner, and I have a map of a farmhouse in Ypres which his unit had to capture. They tried, but he received bullet wounds, was taken to the field hospital. He was so badly wounded that he was going to die a painful death as the hospital had run low on medicines. 

The practise in the field hospitals was to use a pillow to smoother patients who were not going to recover. The concept was to humanely stop pain and help them to die.

My great grandfather, (his father, Frederick Foxen Lee), was a herbalist, and he went over to join my grandfather in the field hospital, where he then used leaches and herbs as medicines. Walter Lee recovered and they both came home to Bolton. My grandmother Lucy Lee (nee Hamer) had family who were killed in the Boer war. Her grandfather and great uncle were in the Lancashire Regiment who died in Boer campaigns."

Silver gents ring found on beach

A gents silver signet ring was found on Milford on Sea beach near the rocks yesterday, Tuesday 26th May 2020.

The ring has some initials. Please click here if it is yours, let us know the initials and we will let the finder know, they have kindly offered to post to whoever lost it.

The History of Milford on Sea Youth Group

The Barry Phillips Youth Trust was started in 2010 in memory of Barry, with a Declaration of Trust which was completed by village solicitor, Hugh Whitlock. The original trustees were Jenny Spenser (Barry's wife), Zena Gibson and Veronica Crowley.

Over ten years the trust ran successfully and awarded in excess of £11,000 to local children.

It was around 1970 when the Church had to abandon their youth fellowship because of a covenant on the new church hall which forbade youth activities. The old hall in Sea Road was then let to Barry Phillips (at the time, Jenny's husband to be) at a peppercorn rent to run as a youth club. 

When the church commissioners found they were not getting a good rent they offered it to the youth committee chaired by Barry, who managed to secure over £4000 through local fundraising to buy the site for the youth of Milford on Sea. 

Jenny joined the committee in 1980 and with Hampshire County Council supplying grants and wages for youth leaders, the club ran until 1995 when funding was withdrawn.

The youth group carried on with volunteers, but the maintenance of an old building was beyond the trusts resources, so in 1997 it was handed over to the Parish Council with a legal agreement that the site would become a Community Centre and Youth Club. 

The Parish, as an elected body, were unable to apply for lottery money, so a new body of trustees was set up and eventually after almost 10 years our present village Community Centre was opened.

Barry passed away in 2009 a month before the new Community Centre was opened in September 2010.

Jennie Barnard and her husband have found themselves in lockdown at Shorefield Country Park, under normal circumstances they would be busy pet sitting for dogs and cats, while their owners went on holiday! 

Jennie says; "Without the company and unconditional love of our little fur babies, and being in lockdown, our lives are pretty empty.... So we thought we would like to help the community by offering our home and our love to a dog who finds him/herself without a carer at this time." 

Jennie says she has many references on the Trusted House Sitters website, they have members for over 5 years.

Village Supports Ray's Italian Kitchen

After the government's lockdown news on the 23rd March, and as the lockdown took hold, Stacey, owner at Ray's Italian Kitchen in Milford on Sea set about trying to find ways to save her business.

Ray's Italian Kitchen opened in December 2018 in memory of her father, Ray, who was one of her greatest supporters. Stacey said: "I have been a restaurateur in the New Forest for many years, but this place is a personal endeavour for me and something I am extremely proud of. The support from my team and customers over the last 16 months has been incredible."

As a first step to save her business she launched a takeaway service, cooking the menu herself with her partner Paul, doing the deliveries. At the same time she has had to balance the home schooling for her son, a tough ask as I am sure any parents with young children will appreciate.

Sadly, this would not be enough, so she launched a Crowdfunder page so that her customers who wanted to, could make a donation, or buy a gift voucher, to help Ray's survive the lockdown and beyond. 

The Local Enterprise Partnership offered a grant to match fund all the money raised by this appeal.

Astonishingly, Stacey's customers have been fabulously generous, and with three days to go she has raised £9,320 from loyal supporters in the village and beyond.

Even in these tough times Stacey has thought of others, and every week she does a special menu for the vulnerable in the village where she delivers a tasty two course hot meal for £10 to over 70 elderly people in the village.

Naturally, Stacey is very thankful to everyone who has supported her and sends her warmest thanks from their support and kindness, and also says; "I am looking forward to seeing you all again in sunnier times."

Joanne in The Big Solent Sing

Keith Metcalf of Milford on Sea conservation volunteers and former Parish Clerk, is a very proud father and grandfather and his day was made when he saw his daughter, Joanne Vezey featuring in the Sing Now Choir in The Big Solent Sing.

The choir's performance was flawless, inspiring and uplifting. 

The song was recorded at home in isolation, when 170 voices came together to spread a message of hope in these strange times.

Baby Owl spotted

Eagle-eyed (or should that be owl-eyed?) William on the 19th May, and Maggie last week, spotted a baby owl in Milford on Sea.

The fluffy ball was sitting by a fence near Knowland Drive.

We are told that the beautiful baby owl was sunning himself on a wire attached to a fence and he appeared very relaxed and content. Many people came along to admire him and took  pictures.

During the early evening he was placed on the roof of a shed and when Maggie's husband went to check on him, he could hear mother owl calling her chick back home.

The nature on our doorstep is great isn't it!

Can you join the sewing and knitting efforts?

The Milford on Sea Community Panel are requesting help in Sewing for the NHS. 

The Charitable Trust is responsible for the MoS Mutual Aid Group (covering Milford, Keyhaven, Lymore, Everton and Downton), which is organising volunteers to support all those people in our communities who are self isolating.

The MoS Mutual Aid Group now have over 170 volunteers, who are shopping, collecting prescriptions, walking dogs, and making friendly phone calls to keep people going. Our website, milfordonseamutualaid.com has lots of information about everything that is going on and how to get involved, or ask for support. 

Many in the village are already volunteering and our Parish Clerks are providing the telephone contact for residents, and generally supporting the efforts in other ways. 

The Churches and many of the local community organisations have been actively supporting people too, and many village groups have been working together.

The MoS Mutual Aid Group have been promoting the work of New Forest Sewing for the NHS. In Milford this is being led by the WI and others who have joined up with them. They have been doing an amazing job supplying Southampton and Lymington hospitals with gowns and scrubs, headbands, scrub bags, and knitted hearts. They have also been making masks for workers, and have now made them for our volunteers as well. 

As the village shops are becoming busier the team are hoping to also supply them too and other local workers. But more help is needed.
