Cricket Hat Trick for Mighty Milford Girls

Having come first and second in last week’s New Forest Schools Sports Partnership Tournament, Milford-on-Sea Primary School’s two girls’ Cricket Teams, The Heys and The Hoes (named after Rachel Heyhoe-Flint the pioneer of Girls and Women’s Cricket in England), excitedly set off for the Ageas Bowl on Wednesday to compete in the Hampshire County Final.

Milford have won this Tournament for the last two years. Could they make it three in a row and complete the Hat Trick?

The all-day tournament saw 12 teams from across the County split into four pools of three, with the Winners of each Pool progressing to the Semi-Finals.

The Hoes
Milford-on-Sea Primary School Cricket Team
The Hoes started strongly with excellent wins over Vigo Primary and Wimborne Juniors. Having topped their Group, they progressed to the semi-finals where they met St Patricks. This was an incredibly even match, with the scorching temperatures undoubtedly affecting both teams.

After an exciting and tense 16 overs, St Patrick’s pipped The Hoes and took the win by just one run!

Obviously, disappointment for the Hoes, but they can truly hold their heads very high.  For such a young team of one Year 6, six Year 5’s and one Year 4 their achievements this season have been quite magnificent.

Meanwhile The Heys were going about business in their normal fashion. They breezed through their Pool Matches against Padnell Juniors and Binstead Primary scoring a total of 219 runs and taking 7 wickets whilst conceding 71 runs and one wicket in the process.

The Heys
Milford-on-Sea Primary School Cricket Team

Into the Semi-Finals against St Faith’s, The Heys kept their foot down restricting their opponents to 35 runs and taking 5 wickets in the process. Their batting was another masterclass as they smashed nine Sixes and posted 96 runs on the board and booked their place in the Final for the third year in a row.

The Final against St Patricks was another demonstration of the superb Cricket played by The Heys. Their tight bowling resulted in 24 out of 40 dot balls and five wickets and left St Patricks with 24 runs on the board and a big task ahead of them as The Heys went into bat. With another seven Sixes and numerous Fours, The Heys put on a massive 94 runs (in 40 balls) and for the third year in a row ended the day as Hampshire U11 Girls’ Dynamos Cricket Champions.

Hordle Cliff Beach Huts - Going, Going, Gone

Thirty one of the most damaged beach huts at Hordle Cliff, and the wooden steps to the beach near Paddy’s Gap car park, have now been removed.

The removal was completed by New Forest District Council (NFDC) over around a two week period.

The clear devastation of these beach huts was predominantly caused by winter storms, in particular Storm Ciaran in November 2023.

With 300 beach huts at Hordle Cliff, there remain others that appear to be at-risk along the eastern section, and time will tell their fate when more bad weather hits in the coming months and years.

We are fortunate that a number of good local photographers, Chris Mabey with his dog Archie, Trevor Machin, Graham Wiffen, and Jan Anderson shared online some informative photos of the damaged beach huts, and the removal operation.

Lost Beach Huts over the years

The Hordle Cliff Beach Huts are not the only ones to have been lost in recent years. In 2020 a row of beach huts closer to The White House, and what was then named Westover Hall, were lost in storms.

The Valentine's Storm in 2014

On Valentine's Night in 2014 a devastating storm, with winds of over 80mph, hit Milford on Sea and destroyed the beach huts on the seafront. The devastation was so severe that it made the National News at the time. To read more, please click here.

About Story of Milford Walking Tour

The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book: a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image...

Stroll through the village of Milford on Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds, while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne.

...and hear the story of Daisy and the string of pearls seven yards long.

Social Deaf Club Next Tuesday

Everyone is invited, hard of hearing or not, to the next New Forest Social Deaf Club on Tuesday 2nd July 2024 at The Cave. Drop in anytime from 5pm to 8pm and you can even bring your dog!

The evening is a great opportunity to meet and chat to new people, whilst relaxing over a glass of your favourite wine, a speciality gin & tonic, or a premium beer, - and if you fancy, grab a tasty plate of meat, fish or vegetarian Tapas.

--------------------------
About the New Forest Social Deaf Club

The New Forest Social Deaf Club is held the First Tuesday of Every Month from 5pm to 8pm in The Cave, entry is free, and everyone is invited, hard of hearing, or not.

This informal social gathering is attended by people from the village and across the New Forest.

This concept was originally founded in February 2024 as a direct result of FeelHear’s first 10 week Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) Course in Milford on Sea village.

Organiser Nancy explains: "When our first Introduction to BSL Course completed in December 2023 the delegates asked ‘what’s next? It was decided that we needed a comfortable, safe space for them to practise their new found signing skills in a social environment. There was also the opportunity to invite others who were deaf, hard of hearing, or simply interested in the deaf world. My aim has always been to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing world, and what better way to do this than to bring everyone together over a cheeky drink in a posh wine bar! - The Social Deaf Club was born.

Hard of hearing, or not, everyone is welcome.

Upcoming New Forest Social Deaf Club dates this year:

Drop in anytime from 5pm to 8pm. Free Entry. Pet dogs also welcome!
