King Charles I imprisoned at Hurst Castle 375 years ago

Hurst Castle have published a reminder that today marks the 375 year anniversary that King Charles I was taken from Hurst Castle on the journey leading to his execution in London six weeks later.

During the Civil War (1642–51) Hurst Castle was held for Parliament. It was never attacked, but achieved fame shortly afterwards when Charles I was imprisoned in the keep from 1st to 19th December 1648 after the Parliamentary army ordered his arrest and transfer from Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight.

For exercise Charles was allowed to walk along the spit. According to Herbert, the king woke one night hearing the sound of the bridge being lowered and horsemen entering the keep. It was the arrival of orders to move him from Hurst Castle. On 19th December 1648, he was taken on towards London for his trial and execution.

Hurst Castle: An Illustrated History by Jude James (Wimborne, 1986), Pages 28 to 36, has the best recent detailed account of Charles I's time at the castle.

Everyone invited to Festive Afternoon at Hillyfield Rest Home

Hillyfield Rest Home are hosting a Festive Afternoon at 2pm on Friday 29th December 2023, and they have invited everyone in the village join them.

The Festive Afternoon will feature mince pies, tea and coffee for all, and is also an opportunity for the local community to come into the home.

If you are feeling a little lonely after Christmas and wanting some company for the afternoon, or would like to meet the residents and care workers, or simply want to take a look around, you are welcome.

The residents in Hillyfield always love a natter and to meet new people. This afternoon will be a great way to brighten Christmas for yourself and others, so please put the date in your diary.

Chocolates for the school from Everton Hyundai Garage

Everton Hyundai Garage visited Milford on Sea CE Primary School last week bearing gifts and in the guise of Father Christmas.

Our generous local car showroom and service centre donated over 300 Chocolate Selection Boxes for all the children to enjoy over Christmas. (Or before for those that can't wait to open them!)

The PFA Elf, Kerry lent a helping hand to Father Christmas as they handed out the gifts, spreading some Christmas cheer and creating lots of smiles.

Jellyfish on Milford on Sea beach

New Forest District Council have made the announcement below following a Portuguese man o'war jellyfish being recently seen on Milford on Sea beach.

NFDC Announcement:

A Portuguese man o'war jellyfish has recently washed ashore at Milford on Sea beach. Please keep away if you spot any as they can sting, so keep dogs clear too. 

There is an increased chance of seeing these because of recent weather.

If you spot anything unusual on our beaches, please let us know. Use a What-3-words location with a photo and anything else relevant. Do not collect or put yourself at risk on the coast.

Jellyfish are important indicators of changes in our seas. Sightings can be reported and the data helps to monitor the health of the ocean. You can do this by clicking here.

Good News for playing fields near school

The Advertiser & Times have published an article written by Roz Water, with good news about the playing fields close to Milford on Sea Primary School.

As part of the development of The Swifts housing estate on Lymington Road near the school in 2021, developers Pennyfarthing Homes provided the playing fields for the village.

However, there has been an ongoing dispute about the 2.2 hectare of fields and they have never been used as they were considered not being not fit for purpose, due to it being littered with rocks, metal and broken glass.

The Milford on Sea Parish Council refused to take responsibility for the site until this had been resolved.

The good news is that this now appears to be being satisfactorily resolved.

Milford on Sea Youth FC looking for U12 Players

Milford on Sea Youth FC U12's are looking to recruit experienced players for their Top League Football Team

This is an exciting opportunity to grow and develop in this experienced team which will be challenging the league and County Cups next year Pathway to U18 and U23 football in the Southern football leagues with Bashley FC.

The U12 team are currently top of the Bournemouth Youth League and are looking for like minded, dedicated players to join the team. With next year moving to 11-a-side this is great opportunity for new players. 

The squad trains early evening on Thursdays, and play games every Sunday in the Bournemouth Youth League.

The village football club was founded in May 2002 by three local ladies, Sarah Elliott, Sara Jeffcock and Hilary Short.

The club caters for girls and boys from ages under 8 to under 16 and competes in the Bournemouth Youth Football League on Sundays throughout the season in mini, 9-a-side and 11-a-side soccer.

The club has a Hampshire FA accreditation and is linked to Bashley FC, giving the U18 & U21 boys the best chance to progress from youth to senior football at an established senior football club.

The squad trains early evening on Thursdays, and play games every Sunday in the Bournemouth Youth League.

Everyone is welcome and new players are always invited.

Places available at Milford on Sea Pre-School

Milford on Sea Pre-School Plus have some places available for Spring 2024.

The charity run pre-school in Milford on Sea still have a few places left for the January and April 2024 intake and are accepting new applications now.

The school are proud to be the only Forest School accredited Early Years provider in the whole of Hampshire and have an experienced and established team who provide a holistic and child led learning environment.

The Pre-School's vibrant, engaging indoor space includes Role Play Stations, a Technology Corner, Creative Area, Reading Snug and Loft Playhouse. The large outdoor space includes a Forest School, Allotment, Outdoor Play Area, Mud Kitchen and Sand Pit.

Successful first British Sign Language Course

The first two groups of Milford on Sea residents have now completed the 10 week Introduction to British Sign Language Course. There were lots of smiles and people using their new found signing skills when they came together to receive their course achievement certificates this week.

The course started at the end of September 2023 and ran for 10 weeks for two groups, one on Mondays, the other on Wednesdays, with around 25 people attending.

The aim of the course was for attendees to be able to communicate more effectively with deaf, or hard of hearing people. This valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

So many thanks for giving us an insight into a world of silence. We knew nothing. Now we know a little about communicating with deaf friends and we might be able to actually help someone. 

Nancy introduced us all to British Sign Language in a fun, informal way.

The course has helped me in everyday life. We need to educate the world about deafness and the struggles.

The course is easy to follow, not stressful, fun & rewarding.

Introduction to British Sign Language Course

British Sign Language helps deaf people, or those hard of hearing, communicate with their silent world, and you can learn more about this amazing language here in Milford on Sea.

Just imagine the smiles if you could communicate with any deaf, or hard of hearing, people you meet.

The aim of the course is for you to be able to communicate more effectively with deaf, or hard of hearing people and to bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing world.

This valuable and caring skill can enhance the lives of those you meet who are unable to hear the world around us.

The same session is held twice a week. So, if you can't make your regular booked session, you can come to the other day in the week.

There will also be an opportunity to meet and chat with fellow course members.
  • Ten Week Course: Runs for one hour a week for 10 weeks.
  • Cost: £99pp in advance for whole course.

Nancy is a warm and friendly person with great communication skills, and she is also a qualified Enhanced DBS Lipspeaker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

Her aim is to deliver deaf awareness in her home village of Milford on Sea and to promote and highlight us as leaders in this great new initiative.

Nancy has over 20 years' experience in Hotel Management where she completed her CIPD – HR Masters qualification. Her love for British Sign Language started in 2006 when she passed BSL L1. She did this to enable her to communicate with deaf guests that visited her hotel.

Based in Milford on Sea with partner Jon, they are huge ambassadors of the deaf world raising awareness with charity events and deaf socials. Nancy travels regularly to clients in Bristol, London, Fleet and beyond.

Signed Christmas Song Concert at Everton Nurseries on Saturday

Everton Nurseries are holding two Signed Christmas Song Concerts, one at 12.30pm & one at 1.30pm on Saturday 16th December 2023.

Come along and watch or join in with The Village Voices Choir singing some festive carols, where the songs will also be performed using a British Sign Language signer.

The singers will also be joined by some clever Hearing Dogs & their recipients.

The signing of the Christmas carols will be led by Nancy Weatherson.

About our Signer, Nancy

Nancy is a warm and friendly person with great communication skills, and she is also a qualified Enhanced DBS Lipspeaker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

Her company, FeelHear, has the aim is to deliver deaf awareness across the whole of the New Forest and surrounding Coastal areas and promote and highlight Milford on Sea as leaders in this great new initiative.

Most recently she has been running 'Introduction to British Sign Language Courses' for small groups in Milford on Sea.

The aim is for participants to be able to communicate with deaf people, and to learn this valuable and caring skill to enhance the lives of those they meet who are unable to hear the world around us.
