James Durrant on Great British Menu

Anyone who was fortunate enough to come along to James Durrant's free cookery demonstration during Milford on Sea Food Week will know what a fabulous chef he is, and if you missed him, or would like to catch more of his cooking, he is appearing on BBC2's Great British Menu every evening this week.

James appeared in the Milford on Sea Food Week Cookery Theatre, as the headline demonstration organised by Hampshire Fare.

His culinary career started in the kitchens of Gordon Ramsey and he went on to become head chef at the Michelin star Maze in Mayfair with Jason Atherton.

Today James runs Durrant Restaurants, providing his expertise as a private chef and operating his own pub and restaurant at The Plough Inn in Longparish near Winchester. 

In March 2012 James took over The Plough Inn, Longparish with his wife Louise. Only six months after opening, The Plough Inn was awarded the UK Pub of the Year Award by the Good Food Guide. It now holds two AA rosettes and has been included in the 2014 Michelin Guide and awarded a BIB Gourmand rating for the second year running.

James’ menu on the Great British Menu Show celebrates the bravery shown during the war and how we have progressed as a nation with what is available to us now. While researching his menu for the competition, he discovered that his wife’s grandfather served in the army during the war and, aged just 17, was one of the first to land on the beaches on D Day.

Milford Author Publishes The Patient

Local Milford on Sea author, Maureen Farenden has published The Patient, the second book in her Trilogy.

New Greeting Card Venture

Another new business venture is starting out in the village. Ellie Whitehall is an Independent Phoenix Trader selling quality UK produced, Forest Stewardship Commission (FSC) accredited greetings cards, gift wrap, note cards and stationery which are not available in the shops.

Ellie offers her range through informal in-home events called ‘Coffee and Cards’ where a few friends are invited or she can just bring some cards and brochures. Ellie also provides baskets of products/samples or brochures in the workplace, and attends Craft markets, Christmas fetes, mother and toddler groups, school fairs, fundraising events etc. 

Originally from Nottingham, Ellie moved to Milford on Sea in November 2013 as she had wanted to live by the sea for a long time and Milford of course seemed to be the perfect place. She loves being part of the village, and with her partner David, enjoy walks along the beach and tasting the culinary delights in the restaurants and pubs. she is also now a member of the village choir, and looking forward to being more involved in village life. 

Ellie will be having a stall at the Milford on Sea May Fayre on Monday 5th May where you can buy some of the Phoenix range and she can also be found some Saturday mornings at St. Thomas’ Church hall in Lymington.

Ellie says that Phoenix is a business that is fun, flexible and family friendly, and she is always looking for people to join her team as way to earn some extra income, be part of a team and meet new people.

Food Week Launches on Radio Solent

The interview was live on air between 9.35am and 9.50am on Radio Solent. As well as promoting the great Food Week we have starting tomorrow, I was also asked to review the Sunday newspapers. 

We managed to cover; a political observation on the European Union Debate, a view on the great news that 'Fat Pensioners Live Longer', Jermaine winning The Voice, and a chat about the Hurst Bridge April Fools Day story on Milford on Sea News. All of this was done without swearing, coughing or eating. Well, I did cough a bit once!

Have You Got Your Tickets?

Milford on Sea Food Week is now getting under way and there is still time to get the last few tickets for lots of great events. Also, many of the 100+ events are free of charge and perfect for enthusiastic cooks, foodies, families and the kids.

The celebrity shows are pretty full or sold out, but still worth checking the website, as some cancellations do come through.

Our fabulous range of restaurants and cafés are all putting on something for you to enjoy during the week, so don't dine at home, get out and check out the great food in the village!

Food Week has lots things for you to enjoy, such as foodie events, tastings, demonstrations, educational talks and so much more. Everything is listed in the Free Programme, so please pick up your copy in The Village News newsagent (opposite the village green), at the Community Centre or in many of the shops.

When you are next in the village why not pop into the Food Week Information Centre on the village green for a chat, and perhaps even buy a few raffle tickets to help our coffers, together with the chance to win a scrummy raffle prize!

Local village photographer, Adam Lynk is on a mission to capture as much of Milford on Sea Food Week as he can in pictures.

Quite a challenge, with over 100 events taking place during the week!  But if anyone can do it, he can.

To make his life a little more difficult, Adam will be loading all of his Food Week photos to a website, where you can view them, download free small images, or even but larger print quality shots.

Prize Winning Sausages!

Our local award winning family butchers, The Butchers Shop in Milford on Sea, has once again added to their extremely impressive array of awards.

At his shop in Church Hill Dave supplies grass fed and free range New Forest beef from local farms, free range out-door reared pork and local Dorset and Hampshire lamb prepared on site by skilled and friendly butchers.

They also produce their own unique, wide range of nationally recognised prize-winning sausages with flavours to suit everyone's taste, together with traditional or hickory smoked bacon which is home cured on the premises.

Help Out with Dementia May Fair

A good old fashioned May Fair fun day for all the family is being planned for the village green on Sunday 18th May at 2pm.

The May Fair also hopes to have May Pole dancing, a Big Balloon Launch and a variety of stalls.

As well as having fun, the purpose is make people aware of Dementia and to understand how to help people with dementia in our community.

To make the day as successful as possible, Ruth is looking for a kind sponsor for the kids Punch & Judy (£200), help with refreshments, and for stalls of fun activities we can all enjoy.

It would be great if people could help out with things like: Bat the Rat, Sponge throwing, Face painting, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Egg and Spoon Racing, Duck Fishing, - in fact, anything traditional and fun.

Local charities are welcome to have stalls to raise money for your own charity but any costs to families must be at a minimum.

Milford on Sea is working to become a Dementia Friendly Village. This is a Friendly Communities Initiative Commissioned by Hampshire County Council, looking to create a community where people with dementia: Can live as independently as possible, Can still be part of their community, are met with understanding and given support when they need it.

Dementia Support Groups are also being established in the village. 50 B4 50-Elderflower & JSW

The Elderflower Restaurant

A new restaurant, The Elderflower opened in Lymington a week or so ago. 

Situated in the former Bluebird Restaurant on cobbled Quay Street, the building has been transformed from a rather dark old fashioned parlour, into a modern fresh and crisp dining room.

We were greeted by a happy and enthusiastic front of house team. As we went to our table we chatted to a high profile chef we know who was already enjoying his meal, there was also another local chef on another table, both naturally checking out this highly awaited new restaurant.

The £25 Lunch for three courses was impressive, both in terms of the choice and value.

Between us we enjoyed the rather fantastic starters of Curried Haddock & Mussel Soup, and the scrummy Spatchcock Quail with crispy angel hair, soft boiled quails eggs and quaildaise. (Nope, I'm not sure what quaildaise is either, forgot to ask, but it tasted nice!)

For main course, between us  we had Grilled Fillet of Pork with anise braised celery, yellow split peas, apple & grain mustard. I had actually became a vegetarian for the day and went for the Wild Garlic Dumplings with coast vegetables, pickled seaweed and Isle of Wight blue. All good again.

We had seen a number of desserts come out from the kitchen and they looked quite excellent creations. 

My sweet was an instant decision, Heavenly Chocolate with Bailey's & white chocolate, praline, nutty chocolate parfait. As we had gone for the set three course menu, my wife was even persuaded to order the Taste Of The Forest with truffle honey cake, pine cream and wild berry port. You will never guess who ate that!

One of our friends went for the Rhubarb Fool with poached rhubarb, rose meringue and floral glass, which was served in what seemed like a large shallow trifle bowl. Not normally excitable, her eyes almost exploded and she tucked in. Being too much of a lady to lick her plate in public, she simply had to settle for scraping the glass bowl until she got most of the pattern off!

The Head Chef Patron, Andrew Du Bourg was formerly Head Chef at 5* Chewton Glen hotel and Michelin starred Club Gascon, London. Andrew and his wife Marjolain have created The Elderflower to serve modern British food with a sprinkling of French flair using locally sourced produce from land and sea.

It is also clear that everything is designed to try and achieve a coverted Michelin star. In our opinion this could be well on the cards in the not to distant future.

The Elderflower is certainly a restaurant for food lovers who like something slightly different. 

Being spoilt with great restaurants in Milford on Sea we naturally normally love to eat in the village, however for an occasional change of scenery, The Elderflower is certainly a place we will be returning to.

A bright Sunday and we were off to JSW in Petersfield with our good friends. A one hour drive and we were soon sitting at the table enjoying a pre dinner drink, home-baked bread and a free canapé dip. 

Jon and I had played a blinder by buying the girls a seven course Tasting Menu meal at the Michelin starred JSW for Christmas. They were so impressed we had been so thoughtful, which is slightly different from our mutual 'always in trouble for something' position.

A bit of a result really, as we bought the meals on a 2 for 1 Groupon deal for £72.50, plus of course we had to go along too!

The meal had an assured confidence. Whilst not the most spectacular meal, this establishment seem to focus on quality ingredients and clear favours. I even ate and enjoyed Cauliflower, which is of course a vegetable of the devil.

The smoked chicken and parmesan risotto was also a triumph. It sounded so simple, but the taste was amazing. Indeed, each course complemented the other, the portions perfect and service excellently timed.

As I was driving, my normal alcoholic consumption was zero. (The things I do for my wife. I know, she is so lucky!)  As our friends were also driving, it was surprising to discover our conversation stayed quite adult and we all remembered everything the next day, which is not what normally happens when we all go out!

Free Cake at Noshtalgia!

Never one to miss the opportunity of free cake, one event I will not be missing during Food Week is Noshtalgia!

Noshtalgia! is a free event, where the young and older generations of Milford on Sea come together to demonstrate recipes of yesteryear. Young MiCO members have paired up with older village residents, who have each shared a recipe from the past. A bit like the ‘The Great British Bake Off’ where Mary Berry passes her experience on to younger cooks, - the teams will be doing similar in Milford style!

A panel of judges will cast a fun eye over the creations and if there is enough to go round the audience will also get a taste.

The event organised by MiCO (Milford Community Organisation) and free to enter, so just come along!

Hurst Bridge Meeting Erupts

Stormy scenes were witnessed as protesters from Milford on Sea made their views known at a recent Hampshire County Council Planning Meeting.

The meeting chairman, Councillor Jass Dupp, only managed to restore order with the threat of calling the police.

After a five year consultation process the proposals for Hurst Bridge were presented for decision by the council.

Protesters tried to make the point that the Milford on Sea community had not been directly consulted and objected that all meetings had taken place in Winchester. These arguments fell on deaf ears.

Hurst Bridge is planned to run from a new bridgehead to be constructed next to Hurst Castle across to Totland Bay on the Isle of Wight.

Councillor Druff, made the point that the new bridge is key to the regeneration of the Isle of Wight and will increase tourism trade for the island. He also said; "Hurst Castle have a great opportunity to expand their café offering to travellers wishing to rest before crossing the bridge."

Plans were then revealed to create a suitable access road, the Village Green would be narrowed in order to widen Church Hill. Shouts erupted from the viewing gallery as protesters heckled, banged their sticks and threw various objects and liquids into the council chamber. As police dragged away the final protester, the livid Milfordian made it clear where the council could stick their bridge.

Eventually order was restored. Councillor D.Druff, in a slightly agitated state, reopened the meeting by saying; "Some people simply do not appreciate want we do for them. Those people from Milford on Sea are always trouble. Why is it that so many retired people have nothing better to do that get in the way of our great ideas." 

Councillor Hugh Jass apologised for Councillor Dan Druff's outburst, and went on to say; "We also wish to make it easier for people from Milford on Sea to reach the island, and saver cards will be made available to all residents which will offers discounts for journeys made on foot or disability scooter."

The chairman then asked the council to vote on the Hurst Bridge proposal. The proposal was approved by a majority of 11 to 1 with the construction of Hurst Bridge to commence on the first day of April 2015. 

Local residents are now planning a sit-in protest and barricades in Church Hill the moment the roadwork team arrives.

A Morning of Fine Cheese

A familiar TV face will surprise you in the 'From Corrie to Cheesemaker' Show in the Food Week Cookery Theatre at 10am on Friday 11th April. 

Sean Wilson, is best known as a soap star, after 21 years playing Martin Platt on Coronation Street.

Today Sean is an accomplished chef and award-winning artisan cheese maker. He has his very own company called The Saddleworth Cheese Company with whom he has won a Gold Medal at the World Cheese Awards in both 2011 and 2012. 

Most recently Sean has had his own ‘Great Northern Cookbook’ TV series and has published a cookbook of the same name. 

Join Sean to hear about his journey from the cobbles to the cheese making urn, with some tips on what makes great cheese, and a few of his light-hearted life stories along the way.

Milford Weather Watch

Standing on the seafront I often see irritatingly fit people striding or even running along Hurst Spit.

On a number of occasions I have even been forced by my wife to make the journey, on the basis that it will apparently 'do me good'. I am not clear on how walking 1.5 miles (or for younger people 2.5km) on shifting pebbles does me good, - but I do know that refusing would certainly not end well for me.

Always unprepared, it is guaranteed that I will be wearing unsuitable shoes to ensure the soles of my feet end up looking like I have been walking on hot coals for an hour or so. Why people do not simply take the enjoyable and picturesque Hurst Ferry from Keyhaven Harbour straight to Hurst Castle I am never sure.

Actually arriving at Hurst Castle is always a pleasure and relief in equal measure, the castle is every changing with what is happening inside, and their is always something new to discover that has been there for centuries. Better still the café serves cake.

Since being breached and reduced to a small rockery after the violent Valentine's Night Storm, the spit is now restored to its full glory and those with a masochistic streak can once again accept the walking challenge. Those who wear flip flops can also see if they can make it to the castle before their feet shred to pieces.

I myself have no immediate plans to go in any other way than by ferry.

I even have the option to easily check out what is happening at Hurst Castle without leaving my PC.  Hurst Castle has solar powered cameras that relay the scene 24 hours a day. You can see what is going on right now from the link below. I can even see what is happening in and around Hurst Castle in stormy weather, I may even catch a glimpse of a mad walker battling the wind and rain, as I sit and watch with a scotch & coke with a bag of pork scratchings.

The Needles Lighthouse also has a new web camera, it is mounted on the outermost of the chalk rocks near sea level. The camera and weather station are 100% solar powered and uses a 3G data network connection for transmitting the images.

The camera operates from Dawn to Dusk 7 days a week and updates its images every 20 minutes - click here to take a look at The Needles Lighthouse camera.

My wife has just suggested that as it is nice today, we should take a walk this afternoon. I think I feel a migraine and limp coming on.

Village Party Night Moves Date

The Village Food Week Party Night! due to be held on Thursday 10th April at South Lawn Hotel will now take place in the summer.

Dorsal Fin are one of the south coast's top soul and rock bands, who play a range of everyone's favourite funk, soul, blues, rock and pop. One thing is for sure, Dorsal Fin are well known for getting any party rocking with soul, rock & retro pop numbers, whilst you enjoy a pay bar, dancing & loads of fun!

When the new dates are announced, the party will suit all ages, and is a great opportunity to get together with friends, or family, or to just come along and meet new people. You can get on the dance floor, or sit at the many tables to simply to enjoy the music and watch the action!

Show Off Your Garden

The organisers of Milford on Sea Open Gardens are looking for new village gardens to join in for this fun day. 

The event takes place on Sunday 29th June, where local people get the opportunity to visit various home gardens across Milford on Sea.

Organiser, Jenny Spenser said; "We have some great stalwarts who open everytime for us but would love some new people - it is not onerous & everyone who has helped in the past really loves the buzz - hard work but great fun & very satisfying."

The event is organised by Milford Gardeners' Club but you don't need to be a member to join in. All the net proceeds go to the Clubs charities. The insurance, organisation, etc is done by the Club, so all you need to do is to just be around for the day to chat about your garden.

Senior Moves in Milford

If you are going to have a change of career and lifestyle what better place to do that than in Milford on Sea.

Susie Kendall now lives in the village and started her professional life as a solicitor in the City, she then retrained to deliver communications skills training to business schools and large organisations on a freelance basis. 

However, she really wanted to work more in her local community and came up with the idea of New Forest Senior Moves, combining her professional background with a desire to do something worthwhile and work with other local businesses.

She moved to Milford from London with her family five years ago, and has since acquired a kayak, several pairs of wellies and a dog! It was her husband’s experience as a fledgling journalist on the Lymington Times ten years previously and a strong love of the sea that drew them back to the area.

Susie said; “We knew we wanted to be part of a strong community, but having lived in London for 11 years we didn’t want to live in a town. Milford ticked all the boxes. I love that I can pop into Milford at any time of the week, and usually see a familiar face.”

She loves tennis and plays regularly at the Milford Tennis and Squash Club, is a keen runner and is learning to sail at Keyhaven Yacht Club, where they also keep a small boat.

Susie started New Forest Senior Moves in 2013. She provides a service to help older people move home – from de-cluttering, to helping find a new home, liaising with other professionals and getting the property ready for sale. She also works with solicitors who hold Power of Attorney over an older person’s affairs who may have already moved into a care home but need help selling a property.

Local Milford on Sea author, Maureen Farenden has published another new book.

The Spirit is the first book in The Inceptor Trilogy. 25th Anniversary Trip to Yerville

The Hordle & District Twinning Association, which includes members from Milford on Sea, have some space on the coach for our 25th anniversary exchange visit to Yerville in May this year.

They would welcome some new families to fill the spaces on what is always a very warm and friendly weekend. You would stay with French families and people don’t have to speak French. You would however need to join the Twinning Association in order to comply with Twinning Exchange insurance requirements.

Arrangements – Coach leaves Hordle 11am Friday 2nd May for an afternoon ferry sailing from Portsmouth to Caen, returning to Hordle Monday 5th May at around 8pm in the evening. When in Yerville - each family or person is accommodated by a French family, and it is a fantastic way to make new friends and experience French life. You don’t even have to speak French!

Trip cost - £80 per adult, £30 per child – this includes all travel (coach and ferry). Once in France all you’ll probably need to buy are ice creams and souvenirs – all food and all visits are taken care of by our French hosts.

Annual membership - is £5 single, £10 family.
