Christmas Dining in Milford on Sea

12 May 2020

It's hard here, it even harder in Nepal

Life in the UK is difficult for many, and with the crisis being worldwide there is also great unreported suffering.

Freedom to Learn is a Milford on Sea based charity run by Joey & Mark Owen. The charity works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.

The charity specifically supports families in Kushadevi, Nepal and the villagers haven’t even been able to access soap to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

They also haven’t been able to work to earn enough for food or seeds to plant their crops - essential for year round income as many are subsistence farmers. As one of the local head teachers said last week: "We’re not sure what’s worse - the deadly spread of Covid-19 or or widespread famine from a prolonged Lockdown across rural Nepal.”

With next to no support from government, they are really struggling.

Joey and Freedom to Learn have set up a multi-level campaign support their students in Nepal during Lockdown

There is a Crowdfunder where people can directly and easily donate towards relief parcels, please click here

There is a 2.6 Challenge where people can also have some fun while fundraising!, please click here to see the campaign poster.

You can follow their progress on their website or Facebook page.

The amazing Milford on Sea C of E Primary School family have also been doing some amazing fundraising for this cause.

Kate Crawford (head teacher) sent pictures of some of their hard work.
  1. First is Miss Walton running 26.2 miles last week
  2. 2nd is Mr Willis with his son riding 26km everyday
  3. 3rd is Miss Walker-Arnot with her two out running 2.6km every day

The school has had links with Kushadevi School in Nepal for a number of years. Aware that families and children are experiencing really challenging circumstances due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, they decided to take on some 2.6 challenges to raise much needed money for their friends in Nepal.

The response from children and their families at home has been brilliant and shows incredible solidarity and support for our Global Neighbours

Children have taken on challenges such as running 26 minutes everyday for a week, cycling 26 km in a day, running 2.6 miles every day for a week. One little Reception child is running 26 laps of his garden every day.

The Keyworker Children that are presently at school have taken on completing a challenge every day for 2 weeks such as 26 skips, making 26 VE Day handprint flags, 26 weeds pulled up from the garden, 26 people at their VE Day Party

Staff have also challenged themselves by walking, running and cycling different distances.

If you would like to donate to this brilliant cause you can do by clicking here.

The school website also has more information, please click here

More about the charity

Freedom to Learn is a Milford on Sea based charity run by Joey & Mark Owen. The charity works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.

They do this by working collaboratively with local grass roots organisations as implementing partners. This structure is not only a legal requirement in Nepal and India, but also ensures that the work they do is locally and contextually relevant. It safeguards against wasted resources, increasing the prospect for sustained and significant impact for the communities they work with. Partners include “Rural Community Foundation Nepal” “Edulift” and “Sahasi Ketaketi” are all monitored and audited by both their National Governing Charities Body and by the Freedom to Learn team on the ground. And after working together since 2012, they know they do a fantastic job.

Freedom to Learn is also committed to raising public awareness about the importance of education and development work; facilitating and mentoring advocacy projects in both Nepal and the UK.

In many areas of the developing world education is key to lifting children and their families out of poverty. Providing adequate education is fundamental to helping young people and families gain independence and emotional and financial security, that we often take for granted.

Lost cycle light on Hurst Spit

We have read online that Simon from Fuel Hair Mechanics has lost a light off of his bike on Hurst Spit, would be nice if we could find it for him.

Here is what he wrote:

"Hi everyone, I lost my front cycle light this morning on my cycle to Hurst Castle along the stones. If anyone finds it can you post it through the security side door to my shop please. I am local and didn't buy an ice cream on my ride I promise, although it would had been a nice breakfast! Have a great day."

If you find the light, his high street shop address is below.

To read more about Fuel Hair Mechanics, please click here.

Hopefully, they will be back cutting hair in Milford on Sea soon, the shop looks amazing and whilst most of us guys are losing our hair, he does wonders for those that still have a full head of locks for him to work on!

FOOTNOTE: Simon's light has now been found and returned by a kind Milford on Sea resident. Nice to live in a village where people look out for each other.

Milford on Sea Commemorates VE Day

In these unprecedented times, Milford on Sea's planned commemorations of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day were badly affected. Badly effected, but not scuppered, as the village spirit ensured that this special occasion was marked appropriately to recognise all of the sacrifices made by so many during World War Two.

The village green saw an emotional and impeccably observed two minutes silence at 11am. People had gathered to pay their respects, and although they were apart (by the 2 metre social distancing), they were together in spirit.

Passing traffic even stopped for the silence and this was followed by a heart felt round of applause.

The morning was certainly a poignant occasion in these troubled times.

Paul French captured a really nice collection of photograph of the morning, please click here to view.

More About Pressed 2 Impress

No doubt most people find washing an ironing tedious, but not Karen O'Keefe, who is the owner of a local Hordle business Pressed2Impress.

Karen explains: "I started Pressed2Impress a few years ago having moved to the New Forest from Surrey with my two children. I decided to advertise for evening ironing work in the local newspaper. Within a few weeks I had attained half dozen clients in the Lymington area, within a month I had increased that to a dozen and they just kept on coming! I realised there was really was a clear demand for a great quality, professional ironing service.

Within 6 months the word had spread and I had more and more work by recommendation. I started offering laundry services, mainly to aid our yachting and business clientel. We were then approached by Lymington boat builders and a few charter companies to help assist with private clients yachts and chartered over night stays.

Within a year our clientele had doubled in size. As far as we know, there was no one else in the area providing such a niche service combining locality with quality service and finish with a fast turnaround. As far as we know, we are the only service used for the marine industry.

Most of our work is now on recommendation we serve many professional people who demand a high standard of service.

I pride myself on maintaining a quality service which is second to none, delivering 100% perfection together with a friendly efficient and personal service."

If you fancy saving yourself some time or tedium, please contact Karen.

Banksy hails NHS Superheroes

All articles we publish always have a relationship to Milford on Sea. However, on this occasion we are going to break our own rules. We could tenuously claim that it is close to the New Forest, but that would be grabbing at straws. The truth is that this simply deserves to be seen by as many people as possible:

Game Changer by Banksy
Banksy, the famous graffiti street artist, has donated a one metre square artwork to the NHS. The monochrome piece was recently hung in collaboration with the hospital's managers in a foyer near the emergency department of Southampton General Hospital.
The image is of a young boy kneeling by a wastepaper basket dressed in dungarees playing with his NHS superhero nurse in a facemask, whilst his Spiderman and Batman toys lay discarded in the bin.
Banksy left a note for hospital workers, which read: "Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white."
The painting will remain at Southampton General Hospital until the autumn when it will be auctioned to raise money for the NHS.
They say, 'A picture paints a thousand words'. - This one certainly does.

I can only imagine that anyone entering the hospital's emergency department, patient or staff, will hopefully be given strength, and be inspired by the artistic message on the wall. Well done Banksy!

Wildlife Garden Challenge: Update 5

Another Update from Keith Metcalf of Milford Conservation Volunteers:

For this update, I have dispensed with the usual list of wildlife recorded from a garden in favour of using the letter that accompanied this report from my Keyhaven friend Nick Pocock. Nick is lucky to also have a home in Sarasota, Florida from where he sent this report of the birds he can see from his 'deck' - as he calls it.

The lovely photograph taken from his 'deck' is stunning, yet Nick says that he prefers his home in Keyhaven!

You will also find two collages of some of the colourful water birds he mentions below.

Nick takes it from here:

I attach a photo taken from our "deck" overlooking a bay on the Intracoastal Waterway in Sarasota, Florida. We don't have a garden as such but you can see that between us and the water is a fringe of mangroves (with some orange coloured new season's Sea Grape leaves and some Buttonwood) underneath some Evergreen Oaks - the local variety being predominately Quercus Virginiana. Our community has a grand-fathered permit to trim the mangroves once or twice yearly. In the distance the mangroves are not trimmed and have grown as high as twenty feet.

I am a very low grade twitcher so I can't identify the relatively few little birds that show on the land side of our house. Recent mid-size birds have been Cardinals, Mocking Birds, Pileated Woodpeckers, Mourning Doves and lone, noisy Fish Crows. One morning recently a Short Tailed Hawk (we think) was sitting in one of the oaks waiting for prey or a view of our breakfast. We do sometimes see Red-shouldered Hawks but this one looked different.

With the exception of the constituents of distant armadas of mixed ducks which have been around recently, water birds are easier to identify, although the juniors of some species have a bad custom of looking much like adults of others.

Common waders etc. seen daily are: Great Blue Herons, Little Blue Herons, Great Egrets and White Ibis. Brown Pelicans are always about but the White Pelicans which arrive reliably in late November, have long since moved on.

Many mornings recently it has been a pleasure to see one or two Roseate Spoonbills flying past. In early spring we used to see more -- standing in shallow water filtering mud in the presence of many other waders, including Wood Storks. Our tides rise and fall between a foot and two and a half feet and it is without question that, unlike twenty years ago, we seldom now see the mud on the bottom of the Bay at low water.

Other water birds we see often are American Kingfishers, Ospreys and Double Crested Cormorants, some of which are probably Anhingas (and I do know the difference but often forget to notice!). Their reported courting habits are curious. We haven't seen it happening here, Cormorants predominate.

Yesterday afternoon we kayaked in the mangrove tunnels and ponds which are in the distance in the attached photo. It was exciting to see a Yellow-Crowned Night Heron and a Glossy Ibis.

Stay safe.
