Newcomers Pack Update - More leaflets please!

A few weeks ago, Ruth Bufton offered to distribute flyers or advertisements for village clubs, classes, voluntary activities, as well as local commercial businesses.

These will be added to 'welcome Bags' which will be delivered to all Newcomers when they arrive to join our village community, and she originally requested at least 50 copies.

Well..., Ruth has now got the list of houses that have changed hands since last October and having assumed that sales were slow during Lockdown, was surprised to discover after consulting the estate agents and going on the land registry that there are many more sales! This could be due to the cut in stamp duty, or quite understandably people wanting to live in this idyllic village, - whatever the reason, there are more 'Newcomers' in the village than expected!

So, rather than 50 leaflets for Goodie bags, she would now like at least 120 please.

Ruth aims to continue making up and taking information bags to Newcomers as they move into the village so that they are welcomed as soon as they settle and they know about you as soon as possible.

Ruth said; "I know this might be a challenge for you to provide even more information leaflets but please be assured none will be wasted. I do not want to keep sending out requests for leaflets too often. To get us to January I suggest you give me an additional 70 copies of your information.

If you did not give me information for this first backlog of Newcomers Goodie bags then I would ask for 120 leaflets please. I will deliver this information even after the bags go out this time because I know some of you have not had time to give me any so far. Please be as quick as you can to give me the information as I will delay handing out the made up bags for another week."

We hope that a Newcomers welcome event will take place next year but until then the Goodie bags are a good alternative. Thank you to the businesses as well as the clubs and associations who have contributed to the Goodie bags so far. So please keep information coming if you are a new business or group.

Please make sure Ruth knows of any changes in contact details for the booklet kept at the Parish Office and handed out to all Newcomers.

Enjoy the free advertising!

End of Era at The Gun Inn

After 33 years at The Gun Inn, Landlord and Landlady Paul and Jacqueline Hill are retiring. They have been at the Keyhaven public house since April 1987.

Their son, Nathan has been helping them to run the business for the past 13 years and he will also be moving on to pastures new.

They would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of their patrons for their continued custom during the past three decades.

A special thank you goes to their small, but very hard working team who have made the post-lockdown re-opening so successful; Karen Stacey, Ian Cooper, Tayla Haines and Daniel Gregory.

The Hill family has many fond memories of the pub during their time there and they will continue to live in the local area.

Paul and the team will be behind the bar until they close on Thursday Evening 15th of October.

Unfortunately the restrictions on social gatherings has not enabled them to have a leaving party. However, they very much hope to see anyone wishing to say farewell and share a drink with them before they leave.

The Gun Inn is expected to be reopening, but there is no definite news on the date or new landlord at present.

New Village Bakery coming!

The village is soon to have a new bakery.

Local resident, Amanda Maidment, is very excited to be starting the new venture, The Coastal Bakery, and hopes to be open in November.

'Berry's', the old village bakery
was situation to the
left in this picture,
under the chimneys.
Incidentally, her new bakery will be next door to what was 'Berry's', the old village bakery many years ago. Some residents may still recall John Berry & Mike delivering the fresh bread around the village in the past.

The Coastal Bakery will be on the corner of the High Street in the shop occupied by Time & Tide Fashions, who are moving to where Moss on the Green was in Church Hill, Milford on Sea.

During the height of lockdown Amanda's, The Little Cake Company provided and delivered delicious homemade cakes from her home and she even offered a special cream tea for VE Day.

Bread, cakes and savoury treats from a specialist bakery, - at least in this difficult times we all have something good to look forward to!

New times for Holland's of Milford

After 21 years Paul & Maureen Holland are retiring from the village grocer and delicatessen; Holland's of Milford.

Both have been such a credit to the village and after so much hard work they deserve a long and enjoyable retirement.

Paul was regular sight around the village in his van delivering to regular and new customers, whilst Maureen could be found behind the counter or organising the fully stocked shop.

During his deliveries Paul provided a friendly face to many who did not get a lot of visitors and I know he enjoyed this as much as they did. Not many people would know this, but for those that could not get out, he would even visit other shops in the village to get things his regular customers needed, such as fruit & vegetables, but could not get for themselves.

Paul & Maureen were always enthusiastic supporters of everything that took place in the village and always willing to help out with some local sponsorship, donations or event promotion. Personally, I would like to say thank you for all of the support they gave the Food Week Team over many years, it was always with a smile and generosity.

In recent times, the whole team at Holland's have been a rock to the local community throughout the current Covid-19 Pandemic, going out of their way to provide extra support to everyone, and in particular the most vulnerable in our village.

The new owner is Kularaj Pathmanathan who intends to continue trading as Holland's of Milford and he says that; "customers will hardly see any changes."

So while we say goodbye to Paul & Maureen from the shop, at the same time we send a warm welcome to Kularaj and look forward to him become as central to the village as our retiring friends were.

Making Milford More Magical This Christmas

Christmas last year saw a big change to the village, with lots of lights and trees, plus an array of decorations.

This year Diana and Tracy would like to make it even better, by having brighter (commercial LED) lights on the forest of trees.

They are all too aware of what a difficult year this has been for everyone and are therefore keen to provide an extra sparkle at Christmas, for young and old to enjoy.

To do this, they need to purchase additional electrical equipment and new lights to replace the battery lights used last year.

They would like to raise £1000 and have set up a JustGiving page - please click here.

If you are able to make a donation via this page, or alternatively via a donation box in The Parish Council Office, Diana and Tracy would be extremely grateful.

Should you wish to contact the ladies regarding possible sponsorship or simply with an offer of help, then please do so on:

The telephone “Exchange Box”

Milford on Sea WI (Women's Institute) hope that lots of you have enjoyed using the “Exchange Box” by the village green over the last 6 months, but have decided to suspend its use from the 1st October  to allow others to use it.

This has been a fun way to use the old Red Telephone Box at the foot of the village green to exchange books, games and other unwanted and useful items.

Milford Really Does Rock!

A message from Nigel and Paula Burt on behalf of Milford on Sea based charity, Olivia Inspires:

We would like to say a huge "Thank you!" to the group of Milford Mums for all their hard work in organising the Milford Rocks event which has sadly become another casualty of COVID-19. The generosity of everyone who donated their ticket money and the multitude of local businesses and bands that offered their support was truly humbling.

Even though the event didn't go ahead, the Milford Rocks organisers were still able to donate an incredible £1,241 to Olivia Inspires.

If you didn't already know it, Milford really does rock!

Kind regards,

Nigel and Paula Burt

Petition to Save Milford from the Sea

A Petition has been started to Save Milford from the Sea by funding a long-term coastal defence plan.

The petition reads: We, the residents, friends and business community of Milford-on-Sea urge the Environment Agency and other Government bodies to fund long-term coastal defence plans at Westover.

This is critical for protecting the homes of dozens of local residents, restoring the scenic coastal path and safeguarding the social and economic future of the village.

We understand that voluntary Partnership Funding will be required and support the New Forest District Council in their bids to secure funding for this programme.

Our goal is to reach as many signatures as possible and we need more support.

You can see how many people have already signed, and sign the petition by clicking here.

Update on welcoming Newcomers to Milford

Dear Newcomers Exhibitors and Milford folk,

Well as you can imagine we will not be doing a Newcomers Supper this year. I thought about doing an exhibition on the Green and tried to think of ways to welcome Newcomers to the village but as things stand it is not possible.

So perhaps next Spring we could have a Newcomers Event which might not be a supper. With the various estates being built in the village and quite a lot of sales of houses plus the extra time between Newcomers events I am thinking we may have too many people to accommodate for a supper. We might just go for an exhibition of clubs and activities people might like to join - using both the church and the hall so you can have as much space as you need.

However I do need to know what you think about this idea please?

I have advertised for several years for volunteers to run this event with me, with the view of taking it over in a year or two, but have not had any offers so perhaps it is time to change how we welcome newcomers to the village or maybe have a break from tradition and drop the supper. It seems that younger people don't have the time to help run clubs yet they want what the clubs offer. Look at the RNLI where would the sailors in our community be without the wonderful service the RNLI offers? Yet our local branch has struggled to get anyone willing to be on a committee.

If there is anyone out there who would like to help with welcoming the Newcomers to the village just give me a call 01590 641875 or click here to contact.

I would welcome any ideas you have so we still make Milford a lovely place to live and welcome newcomers to this friendly and vibrant village

With best wishes, Stay safe and well.

Ruth Bufton
