Would you like a Cheerful Chat?

The Milford on Sea Mutual Aid team of volunteers from across the village are tirelessly providing as much support as possible for those in need in our community. (Great work guys!)

They have now come up with another great idea to provide a friendly voice to anyone fancying a chat.

As organiser Jenny Whitley explains; "We are all affected by not spending time with our families and friends and isolation can be very stressful, so this weekend we have launched the Cheerful Chats! 

Lots of people are starting to phone other people in the village, most of whom they don’t already know, to have a good chat. The internet is a lifeline, but nothing can replace the sound of a human voice."

One lady has already arranged to have coffee with the lady who has rung her – once this is all over!

Amanda Remembered

It is with personal sadness to let people know that Amanda Tanner passed away on Friday morning having lost her battle with cancer.

Amanda was a lovely, vibrant and talented woman. Personally I got to know her some years ago when she volunteered to help out with some village events, and in no time she became an integral part of the organising team. This would be of no surprise to anyone that knew her, as she was a natural organiser with a flair to get things done, whilst enthusing the team around her. She was also great company, fun, an excellent cook and certainly enjoyed a good time.

Her online diaries of sailing adventures with husband Mark (and Basil the dog), were always a good read and a demonstration of the lively fun loving person she was.

Amanda contributed to the village and community in numerous ways, not least by being a Milford on Sea School governor. 

Many people in the village will be really saddened by this news, but hopefully her friends can hold on to some warm memories of Amanda in happier times.

Our thoughts are with Mark and we wish him all the strength he needs.

Creative gardens with a smile

Whilst we are in lockdown an enterprising villager has created a friendly visitor in her garden. This certainly brings a smile.

Across the country some people are displaying bears in front windows as a way to entertain children on daily walks. The idea was inspired by the children’s book We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by UK author Michael Rosen.

A family in Stockport have taken this idea to another level displaying two giant teddy bears, named Ted & Ed, in their front garden in various amusing situations. In response, some local children have begun leaving thank you notes as well as drawings and paintings of their favourite days.

My guess is that the adults are enjoying the scenes as much as the children!

About The Good News Newsletter

An enterprising group of local people have put together a 'Good News Newsletter' with the aim of keeping everyone informed and amused during this difficult time.

The Good News Newsletter has been created by Milford Library, Milford Mutual Aid Group, The Village Voice and MoS News Bulletin.

We will be publishing a copy of each edition here online and for those in the village who do not use digital communication, the Parish Council are printing some paper copies which will be available in some village shops and some distributed by volunteers.

Wildlife Garden Challenge: Update 2

Keith's latest update:

I was going to include the first overseas report in David's next news issue, but this will now wait until until later. In the meantime, our 22 Milford-on-Sea contributors (to date) have now recorded fifty (50) different bird species from their homes and gardens. I think that is a quite significant number.

In the Issue (2) summary I have suggested a couple of new things which will also give you something else to consider doing during our time at home.

1) to include in your lists any wildflowers growing in your gardens, but only those that come into flower (maybe send a photo if you don't recognise the flower and I will get our MCV flora experts to identify it for us - don't forget to put a coin or ruler that will show us roughly how large the flower is) 

and

2) for those who want to recognise the call of the Mediterranean Gulls that are currently flying over our houses every day, I include the website address for British Birdsong which is extremely simple to use and covers 257 of our most common bird songs.

Update from Freedom to Learn

Freedom to Learn is a Milford on Sea based charity run by Joey & Mark Owen. The charity works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.

They do this by working collaboratively with local grass roots organisations as implementing partners. This structure is not only a legal requirement in Nepal and India, but also ensures that the work they do is locally and contextually relevant. It safeguards against wasted resources, increasing the prospect for sustained and significant impact for the communities they work with. Partners include “Rural Community Foundation Nepal” “Edulift” and “Sahasi Ketaketi” are all monitored and audited by both their National Governing Charities Body and by the Freedom to Learn team on the ground. And after working together since 2012, they know they do a fantastic job.

Freedom to Learn is also committed to raising public awareness about the importance of education and development work; facilitating and mentoring advocacy projects in both Nepal and the UK.

In many areas of the developing world education is key to lifting children and their families out of poverty. Providing adequate education is fundamental to helping young people and families gain independence and emotional and financial security, that we often take for granted.

Milford Claps for the NHS

For the third week now, people across the UK have come out of their homes at 8pm on a Thursday to show their appreciation for the NHS workers and all they are doing at this difficult time.

The picture sent to us below shows people in Gillingham Road, and this scene was reflected right across Milford on Sea.

When participating, it is hard not to reflect on what this actually means; and to feel true respect and appreciation for these wonderful people - and a deep wish that they all stay well and safe.

It is funny, yet heart-warming how this caring community action stirs so much spontaneous emotion.

There are so many people we must be thankful of; our individual volunteers in the village, restaurants working to keep us fed, the village supermarkets, village shops & pharmacies still providing services and vital deliveries, the carers still looking after the elderly & vulnerable in the village, ...and nationally the nurses, doctors, porters, home carers, takeaways, supermarket workers, factory workers, delivery drivers, postal workers, police, binmen, council workers, chemists, taxi drivers, public transport workers, communication & IT providers, TV & radio stations, my son (keeping peoples gas heating going) and so many more key workers who are looking after people and putting others before themselves, and also keeping the country functioning.

Keep your spirits up everybody, there are many, many people helping us all to get through this.

All food donations collected will be distributed to the needy of the area. Of course, right now there are more in need due to the hardship arising from Covid-19.

Home Workouts with Lindsay: No.2

Lindsay Coyle has published a couple more keep fit videos for people to join in with.

Lindsay is a yoga and fitness instructor who normally does regular classes at the Milford on Sea Community Centre. Her four classes a week consist of: Weights, 30-Minute Abs, Yoga & Meditation and FlexiStrength.

Whilst Ellie’s England 2020 Golf Competition schedule is on hold, she has been practicing and developing new golf drills and exercises in the garden. EnglandGolf picked upon her last drill and posted Ellie’s achievement on Twitter with over 2.3k views to date.

Enjoy Cycling Safely

It is nice that so many people are getting out for their daily exercise.

It has been mentioned to us that a few cyclists seem to be riding quite fast around the village, of course, they may or may not live here.

As we have a number of elderly people in the village, it would be nice if cyclists would ring their bells to warn people they are coming, as some people's hearing is not what it used to be and they can be startled and even frightened by a fast bike bearing down on them.

Bikes are also very quiet, and there is a risk that if a pedestrian just moved suddenly one step to the side, then the cyclist could crash into them. The strong wind often deadens any sound from an approaching bike.

People are doing a great job looking after each other, please lets also think about others whilst out exercising.

Ta, and keeping peddling, running, walking or whatever you can manage to do - with social distancing of course!

From Tuesday 7th April La Perle Restaurant is once again offering a delivery service. 

They are offering delicious home-made cuisine, prepared using fresh, local produce and delivered hot to your door. Social distancing is being adhered to, both on the premises and during deliveries.

Milford-on-Sea home movies 1925

Wessex Film and Sound Archive have published a home movie of Milford on Sea from 1925.

Whilst the quality is not to clear, it does give a fell of the past.

Wessex Film and Sound Archive description: Amateur film, possibly taken by Percy Laws of Retford of Milford, Hampshire (Milford on Sea, Hampshire). One shot of exterior of Quayside Mission Men's Home. Cuts to street scene with motor car. Countryside lane with three young women in pale coloured drop waisted dresses. The women walk along a street and into a building. Subsequent shots see two similarly dressed women and a man continue their walk until they stumble across a field with berries growing; whereupon the begin picking and eating berries (their names are given as John, Jess and Fred). The trio are seen seated on a bench, the gent reading a paper, one woman holding a kitten in her arms, and all three eating berries.

The walk continues, with the gent holding the women arm in arm through parkland. A gentleman in a flat cap fishing at the shoreline, while waves lap at his feet, extended shots of the waves. Three women on the shingle play around, one looking out to sea with a spyglass the others ruffling each other's hair. Two individuals emerge from a changing room (outbuilding that looks very much like an orangery), clad in bathing suits and large towels.

They make their way down to the sea via an area of shady woodland, where they leave their towels with a woman sat on a bench, a further gent follows. Two more women exit the changing room, in swimsuits. The party paddle, splash and swim.

Footnote: Bob Braid from Milford on Sea Historical Record Society having seen the film, has provided this updated narrative of the scenes:

The movie is ‘possibly by Percy Laws of Retford, Nottinghamshire’ [WF&SA catalogue] (no Laws or property called Retford in the 1925 Milford Directory). 

The first 3 scenes are Milford High Street: first with car parked at side is the Red Lion junction, you can see the War Shrine on Miles’ bakehouse wall; the second is the bottom of the Green with George & Mary at right looking towards Myrtle Cottage; the third is probably from about outside Collins & Butler looking towards the Sea Road junction. 

The rest is doubtful; the bloke fishing might be Milford with Hurst Spit in background and the 3 on the beach might be Milford, but could be anywhere. The bathing scene isn’t, there’s nowhere here where trees come down close to the beach.

They can offer a chat, or help with benefits, money advice, consumer issues, care at home, relationships, care homes and services for older people.

There service is free, confidential, impartial and independent - and all advisers have all been trained to a high standard. They will listen with empathy and work with you to reach the outcome you hope to achieve.

Please email your order over, no later than 4pm on Tuesday 7th April for a Friday delivery. 

Please complete order form above and copy and paste it into your email. We have not done home deliveries before, so please bear with us through any teething problems! Please do not call us as we are in the kitchen during the day, busily making more lovely fishcakes. 

We will telephone you on Wednesday afternoon to take payment, and confirm your delivery information. 

The order will be delivered Friday morning. Delivery is free for orders of £14 or more. For orders of less than £14.00 a small delivery charge of £2.00 is applied. ​Please do bear with us at this busy time. We will respond to your emails in the order we receive them but there may be a slight delay at times. 

This week’s Salmon special is ‘Tandoori Salmon with Mango’ – exotic spices with the mango rolled in. Not too hot, but it has a spicy kick. 

The Friday Fishy Supper main this week is our Crabbie Mac n Cheese - the CATCH take on macaroni cheese; Crabbie, cheesy with an aromatic, oriental note. Simply heat and serve with a crispy green salad. Not dairy free I’m afraid, but certainly yummy! 

We are also running a pate. We are pretty good at making these…. This week our Smoked Mackerel Pate, with fresh horseradish & lemon. Traditional and great on your toast for Good Friday tea. 

For these local deliveries, we are switching away from our plastic packaging (it is fully recyclable I hasten to add) to our Kraft compostable packaging, which we use for our events. It goes in the freezer perfectly and will be fully labelled for you.

Lastly to the wonderful, efficient refuse collectors who quietly remove all our waste weekly. How lucky are we as the warm weather gathers speed.

In a world of change, these people have certainly made our lives more comfortable, as we wait!!

PS - Dog Walkers: We have also had another note from a reader asking us to mention that a Radio 4 programme yesterday was discussing that although pets themselves cannot spread the virus, it is possible for it to spread on dogs’ coats, collars or leads.

Dogs should of course be kept on a lead whilst out walking at this time and the 2 metre rule should also apply to them.

My guess is that it would be hard to explain this to your pets, so owners, please keep your pets at a safe distance from others whilst this crisis continues.

Dogs and all pets must be a great comfort to many at this time, please if you are walking with them, keep the social distancing rule in place.

Wildlife Garden Challenge: Update 1

Well, here we are a week or so into the 'stay at home' Wildlife Garden Challenge and what a quite remarkable start.

Fifty-seven species have been recorded from 11 contributors to date. The species include 43 different birds and numerous butterflies, bumblebees, mammals, amphibians, a bat and one reptile. A great start.

In the next issue I shall send the first of six overseas reports, starting with Queensland Australia. What a contrast to our own back-yard wildlife. There are some magnificently coloured species, many of which I have never even heard of let alone seen!

Remember, all our overseas friends are in the same position as ourselves, with all of them experiencing similar restrictions to ourselves.

In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy as much time as possible doing your window and garden wildlife challenge.
