Keith launches book on The Natural History of Milford-on-Sea

Local conservationist and former Parish Clerk, Keith Metcalf is launching an impressive book entitled The Natural History of Milford-on-Sea Parish (Including Keyhaven)

As Keith explains:

"My passion for wildlife, and in particular birds, goes right the way back to when I made the first of many bird misidentifications. I’ll explain;

My friends and I were playing soft-ball cricket in our narrow alleyway at the back of the Metcalf family home in Edmonton, North London. This was in about 1961 a year or two before the Beatles had their first hit single.

I was getting ready to face the next ball and was standing in front of our home made wicket (which was a flat wooden board propped up at the back by a stick hooked under a nail). Just as I was about to hit the ball I saw this bird come skimming over the tops of the fences and hedges and straight along our alley towards where we were playing. It twisted and turned to veer off before diving towards the nearest garden hedgerow a few feet away. It plucked a frightened house sparrow out of thin air as the poor bird tried valiantly to reach the hedge before he was grabbed by unmercifully sharp talons. Clutching his lunch without even stopping, the hawk flew upwards and over the houses at the end of the alley and on towards the local school playing fields.

This was my first memorable encounter with a bird of prey, which at the time we believed was a kestrel. Unfortunately, my friends, Steve, Rob and Ron were no more knowledgeable at bird identification than me. For many years we all just accepted that the bird was probably a kestrel, the only hawk we had heard of. Out of the four of us playing cricket that day, three went on to enjoy bird-watching as a life-time hobby. Steve and his wife Jeannie both joined the staff at the RSPBs headquarters in Sandy, Bedfordshire. Ron ventured with us on several birding excursions and I started keeping bird records and gave local ‘slide-talks’ before helping Steve and my cousins start a local bird advisory group that we named the “Pollydishwasher Bird Information Centre”. By-the-way, ‘pollydishwasher’ is a colloquial name for a Pied Wagtail, the bird we chose as our emblem. The group only ever received half a dozen or so enquiries, so you could say our first birding venture spectacularly failed. However, this did lead to my cousins Norman and Doreen and my friend Steve forming a local RSPB group in Enfield. Under my cousin’s leadership, the group went on to become one of the biggest RSPB fundraising groups in the UK. Sadly, after nearly 50 years and not being able to find younger committee members to carry the group forward, they eventually folded a few years ago.

Following those wonderful early days of the RSPB group and moving down to Milford-on-Sea in 1988, I subsequently became absorbed on the wider issues affecting wildlife, including habitat management, conservation and more recently trying to understand the effects that saltmarsh erosion, climate change and sea-level rise has on our important coastal habitats, their national and international designations, wildlife and the local community.

Anyway, getting back to the abandoned game of cricket and the bird of prey, as I gained knowledge and birding experience over the next few years, I realised that the bird we saw that day displayed all the typical characteristics of a sparrowhawk and not a kestrel. The four of us dashed round to the school playing fields and being fit and athletic in those days, we nimbly climbed over the six-foot high ‘spiked’ school railings (not sure whether the spikes were to keep the schoolchildren in or young hooligans like us out!) We ran across the sports pitches to within 50 yards of the bird that was now perched high on top of one of the school buildings.

We watched mesmerised as the hawk plucked the feathers from the body of the poor sparrow and saw them drift down the roof and into the gutter. A few of the feathers gently taking to the air as the breeze carried them away across the playground and onto the fields where we were watching.

However, that was not quite the end of the story. As we watched the feathers drift towards us, the sparrowhawk decided to bite off the sparrows head which was promptly dropped and came tumbling down the slate roof, missed the gutter and dropped onto the playground. The sparrowhawk flew off and we went to investigate the neatly severed head of the sparrow. It was not a pretty sight seeing those lifeless beady eyes looking straight back at us! Nevertheless, it is a memory that has now lived with me and my friends for nearly sixty years. Watching birds has never been quite the same since that first raptor encounter."

******************

Book One, will be the first of three wildlife books Keith is writing about the wildlife of Milford-on-Sea parish. Books two and three will be released in 2021 and 2022. The first book describes his early life as a Londoner and how his life was shaped by a loving wife and a caring family. It explains how his interest in wildlife and conservation gathered momentum when he became Milford-on-Sea’s parish clerk for seventeen years in the late 1990s before his retirement in 2014.

The first book also looks at five of Keith’s favourite local species groups; birds, wildflowers, butterflies, moths and bumblebees, but there is so much more besides, and Keith says that in reading the book, he hopes that it might just rekindle old memories for those older readers when they look back over the past fifty or sixty years. For example, he retells the stories of the Torrey Canyon oil-spillage disaster, the Ringwood Mink release, Navitus Bay wind farm, the 2014 St Valentine’s Day storm, Dibden Bay and the emergence of Climate Change and the young Greta Thunberg. He writes about his heroes and heroines in conservation, historic local events and social history and the controversial issue of building on green-belt! But essentially, book (1) is about Milford’s wildlife, conservation and habitat management and Keith hopes that by reading it, it might help find the next generation of young Milford conservationists.

Book Two covers all the systematic wildlife lists of Milford-on-Sea parish and book Three is an historical account of how the Pleasure Grounds, Studland Common and Sharvells Copse came into public ownership under the stewardship of the Parish Council. It compiles an historical record of the various wildlife surveys and management plans undertaken at various stages of all the important public open spaces of Milford-on-Sea parish.

Signed copies of Keith’s first book will be available from 1st December and can be purchased directly by emailing: keithmetcalf@btinternet.com

The 360 page hard bound full colour A4 book will sell at £30 (+ postage if not local). Keith is making a donation of £1 each to Oakhaven Hospice and Milford Conservation Volunteers for every book sold. It is a not-for-profit book with typesetting, printing, binding and publishing costs being entirely funded by the author.

Keith said: “Both these causes (Oakhaven and MCV) have been central to my life since moving our family to Milford-on-Sea. Oakhaven Hospice played an important role in looking after my wife (Anne Metcalf former Milford-on-Sea Medical Centre Practice Manager) and father (Rupert Metcalf) who were cared for with such love, care and dedication when they were very poorly. They did likewise for my friend, the irrepressible Mervyn Couzens.” Keith continued; “My Milford Conservation Volunteers work as their Conservation Officer has given me time to adjust to life following my wife Anne’s untimely departure in 2009 and has allowed me to indulge myself in one of my favourite hobbies. I am delighted to be able to give a little back to these two exceptional and worthy causes who do so much for our local community.”

Newcomers Pack Update - More leaflets please!

A few weeks ago, Ruth Bufton offered to distribute flyers or advertisements for village clubs, classes, voluntary activities, as well as local commercial businesses.

These will be added to 'welcome Bags' which will be delivered to all Newcomers when they arrive to join our village community, and she originally requested at least 50 copies.

Well..., Ruth has now got the list of houses that have changed hands since last October and having assumed that sales were slow during Lockdown, was surprised to discover after consulting the estate agents and going on the land registry that there are many more sales! This could be due to the cut in stamp duty, or quite understandably people wanting to live in this idyllic village, - whatever the reason, there are more 'Newcomers' in the village than expected!

So, rather than 50 leaflets for Goodie bags, she would now like at least 120 please.

Ruth aims to continue making up and taking information bags to Newcomers as they move into the village so that they are welcomed as soon as they settle and they know about you as soon as possible.

Ruth said; "I know this might be a challenge for you to provide even more information leaflets but please be assured none will be wasted. I do not want to keep sending out requests for leaflets too often. To get us to January I suggest you give me an additional 70 copies of your information.

If you did not give me information for this first backlog of Newcomers Goodie bags then I would ask for 120 leaflets please. I will deliver this information even after the bags go out this time because I know some of you have not had time to give me any so far. Please be as quick as you can to give me the information as I will delay handing out the made up bags for another week."

We hope that a Newcomers welcome event will take place next year but until then the Goodie bags are a good alternative. Thank you to the businesses as well as the clubs and associations who have contributed to the Goodie bags so far. So please keep information coming if you are a new business or group.

Please make sure Ruth knows of any changes in contact details for the booklet kept at the Parish Office and handed out to all Newcomers.

Enjoy the free advertising!

To contact Ruth please call: 01590 641875 or click here to contact.

End of Era at The Gun Inn

After 33 years at The Gun Inn, Landlord and Landlady Paul and Jacqueline Hill are retiring. They have been at the Keyhaven public house since April 1987.

Their son, Nathan has been helping them to run the business for the past 13 years and he will also be moving on to pastures new.

They would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of their patrons for their continued custom during the past three decades.

A special thank you goes to their small, but very hard working team who have made the post-lockdown re-opening so successful; Karen Stacey, Ian Cooper, Tayla Haines and Daniel Gregory.

The Hill family has many fond memories of the pub during their time there and they will continue to live in the local area.

Paul and the team will be behind the bar until they close on Thursday Evening 15th of October.

Unfortunately the restrictions on social gatherings has not enabled them to have a leaving party. However, they very much hope to see anyone wishing to say farewell and share a drink with them before they leave.

The Gun Inn is expected to be reopening, but there is no definite news on the date or new landlord at present.

New Village Bakery coming!

The village is soon to have a new bakery.

Local resident, Amanda Maidment, is very excited to be starting the new venture, The Coastal Bakery, and hopes to be open in November.

'Berry's', the old village bakery
was situation to the
left in this picture,
under the chimneys.
Incidentally, her new bakery will be next door to what was 'Berry's', the old village bakery many years ago. Some residents may still recall John Berry & Mike delivering the fresh bread around the village in the past.

The Coastal Bakery will be on the corner of the High Street in the shop occupied by Time & Tide Fashions, who are moving to where Moss on the Green was in Church Hill, Milford on Sea.

During the height of lockdown Amanda's, The Little Cake Company provided and delivered delicious homemade cakes from her home and she even offered a special cream tea for VE Day.

Bread, cakes and savoury treats from a specialist bakery, - at least in this difficult times we all have something good to look forward to!

New times for Holland's of Milford

After 21 years Paul & Maureen Holland are retiring from the village grocer and delicatessen; Holland's of Milford.

Both have been such a credit to the village and after so much hard work they deserve a long and enjoyable retirement.

Paul was regular sight around the village in his van delivering to regular and new customers, whilst Maureen could be found behind the counter or organising the fully stocked shop.

During his deliveries Paul provided a friendly face to many who did not get a lot of visitors and I know he enjoyed this as much as they did. Not many people would know this, but for those that could not get out, he would even visit other shops in the village to get things his regular customers needed, such as fruit & vegetables, but could not get for themselves.

Paul & Maureen were always enthusiastic supporters of everything that took place in the village and always willing to help out with some local sponsorship, donations or event promotion. Personally, I would like to say thank you for all of the support they gave the Food Week Team over many years, it was always with a smile and generosity.

In recent times, the whole team at Holland's have been a rock to the local community throughout the current Covid-19 Pandemic, going out of their way to provide extra support to everyone, and in particular the most vulnerable in our village.

The new owner is Kularaj Pathmanathan who intends to continue trading as Holland's of Milford and he says that; "customers will hardly see any changes."

So while we say goodbye to Paul & Maureen from the shop, at the same time we send a warm welcome to Kularaj and look forward to him become as central to the village as our retiring friends were.

Making Milford More Magical This Christmas

Christmas last year saw a big change to the village, with lots of lights and trees, plus an array of decorations.

This year Diana and Tracy would like to make it even better, by having brighter (commercial LED) lights on the forest of trees.

They are all too aware of what a difficult year this has been for everyone and are therefore keen to provide an extra sparkle at Christmas, for young and old to enjoy.

To do this, they need to purchase additional electrical equipment and new lights to replace the battery lights used last year.

They would like to raise £1000 and have set up a JustGiving page - please click here.

If you are able to make a donation via this page, or alternatively via a donation box in The Parish Council Office, Diana and Tracy would be extremely grateful.

Milford Really Does Rock!

A message from Nigel and Paula Burt on behalf of Milford on Sea based charity, Olivia Inspires:

We would like to say a huge "Thank you!" to the group of Milford Mums for all their hard work in organising the Milford Rocks event which has sadly become another casualty of COVID-19. The generosity of everyone who donated their ticket money and the multitude of local businesses and bands that offered their support was truly humbling.

Even though the event didn't go ahead, the Milford Rocks organisers were still able to donate an incredible £1,241 to Olivia Inspires.

If you didn't already know it, Milford really does rock!

Kind regards,

Nigel and Paula Burt

Petition to Save Milford from the Sea

A Petition has been started to Save Milford from the Sea by funding a long-term coastal defence plan.

The petition reads: We, the residents, friends and business community of Milford-on-Sea urge the Environment Agency and other Government bodies to fund long-term coastal defence plans at Westover.

This is critical for protecting the homes of dozens of local residents, restoring the scenic coastal path and safeguarding the social and economic future of the village.

We understand that voluntary Partnership Funding will be required and support the New Forest District Council in their bids to secure funding for this programme.

Our goal is to reach as many signatures as possible and we need more support.

You can see how many people have already signed, and sign the petition by clicking here.
