Villagers enjoy MAF Cessna on the village green

The May Bank Holiday on Monday 6th May 2024 started bright enough for people visiting the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) Cessna 150 aircraft on Milford on Sea village green.

Although the weather became less kind as the rain fell, this did not stop many people going along to try out the pilot’s seat for size, and also trying their hand at landing the plane on the flight simulator.

The event was organised between Christians Together in Milford on Sea and Everton and Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF).

The Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is a Christian mission organisation that has pilots and planes to deliver relief workers, doctors, pastors, school books, food, medicines to isolated people in areas of the world where everything can only be safely and speedily transported by air.

There is a MAF plane taking off or landing every six minutes.

Grab an Amazing Village Food Bargain with 'Too Good To Go!'

We have recently been made aware of the Too Good To Go! app, and yesterday bought two large bags of shopping in Milford on Sea village for just £3.29 each!

The example below was from our village Coop, and One Stop are also part of this excellent money saving scheme.

Incredible Contents of 2 Surprise Bags for £3.29 each
from the Coop
 in Milford on Sea
(Sunday 5th May 2024)

Like most brilliant ideas, Too Good To Go! is simple, and makes a massive impact in turning food that would be wasted into bargain food for local people.

Too Good To Go Surprise Bags

Each Surprise Bag contains a random variety of products at a genuine fraction of its retail price. The picture above shows the bargains we received when we tried it.

On daily basis, participating food businesses package up items that has passed its best before date, or any fresh food that hasn't passed its use by date. The best before date is just there to indicate quality, not safety, so the food will still be perfectly safe to enjoy.

The prices of Surprise Bags vary, but each provides the opportunity to buy a bag of groceries at a fraction of their cost.

Food waste feels criminal when so many people have been hit by the cost of living crisis and could benefit from food that is thrown away unnecessarily. Shockingly, In October 2022, a report by the WWF found that globally, 33 to 40% of all food produced is wasted, whilst simultaneously, seven million people in UK live in food insecurity.

Village Shoppers

It couldn't be easier to see the Surprise Bags available in the village each day. Simply download the Too Good To Go! app from your app store or use this QR Code.

You can then buy a Surprise Bag on the app, collect it from the seller with your own bag, and then see what you have to create meals for the week.

At present our village Coop and One Stop are providing Surprise Bags on the app and we hope that other village food outlets will sign up having read this.

Village Shop, Café, Restaurant Owners

We would love to see more of our village businesses joining the app.

Signing up to Too Good To Go is free, and you won't pay anything unless you sell food through the app. Once you start selling food, they will deduct an annual fee and a small commission on each Surprise Bag sold.

To sign up, simply grab the app and they will walk you through how to register and to start providing local people with food that you might otherwise throw away.

----------------------------
About Too Good To Go!

Website Statement: We dream of a planet with no food waste. Every day, unsold food from your favourite restaurants, grocery stores, cafés, and shops goes to waste simply because it hasn’t sold in time.

The Too Good To Go app makes it easy to make a difference, allowing you to save Surprise Bags of good food at an even better price.

We work with lots of different types of stores and restaurants, so you'll find anything from supermarket groceries, to hotel breakfasts, to fresh pastries from bakeries. Any fresh food that hasn't passed its use by date can be sold on the app. Occasionally, you might receive an item that has passed its best before date. This date is just there to indicate quality, not safety, so the food will still be perfectly safe (and delicious!) to consume.

Inflatable Yellow Duck Sparks 999 Rescue

A recent article in the Advertiser & Times by Chris March, reported on a 999 call made in the early evening last Saturday for a ‘person in water’ near the Needles Eye Café.

Lymington RNLI Lifeboat Crew
The emergency call was made with good intent, and the RNLI  lifeboat and coastguard teams from Lymington and Mudeford were launched within nine minutes. A rescue helicopter also joined the search.

Ultimately the search only turned up the yellow duck, tree branches and fishing pots, and the rescue mission was stood down.

Nice to know the emergency services are there for whenever someone's in trouble. Even though sometimes it is just an inflatable duck!

Happy 16th Birthday to Us!

It's our birthday! Milford on Sea News was founded in May 2008 and has gone from strength to strength over the past 16 years.

Hopefully you are enjoying the journey, and we thought you might like to look back to see where we have come from.

From day one, one man and his dog, have always loved their publishing independence and enjoyed sharing good news from around the village.

Our aim is simple: To inform and entertain people with local village news, local history, random stories, and to promote all that is happening in the village. We also look to help keep the village vibrant by promoting & supporting village businesses the best we can.

All is done purely for the benefit of the community; we are self-funded, and not a penny is charged for anything we do.

------------------------------
Each week we publish a Free email 'Milford on Sea News Bulletin' to close to 2,500 people with all the latest village news. For your copy simply click here.

------------------------------
Summary of Our History

The original Milford on Sea Website, launched in May 2008, was viewed over 2 million times before becoming Milford on Sea News in 2011.

To date the Milford on Sea News website has had over 3.5 million views
and now averages around 50,000 page views per month.

Not all of our articles are serious, as people who have read our April Fools Day, and other occasional humorous pieces, will know.

We never really considered that people would enjoy or appreciate what we built, however it appears people do, and it is satisfying to provide a local service with a smile to the local community.

Today we have 2,394 people, from a village population of c.5000, who each week receive our Free weekly Milford on Sea News Bulletin which contains all of the latest village news. (Get your copy here)

Milford on Sea Food Week took place in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2104 and 2016 and featured over 100 food related events across the village.

This included celebrity shows in the Cookery Theatre with appearances from renowned chefs such as Tom Kerridge, Rosemary Shrager, Angela Hartnett, Dick Strawbridge, and winners from The Great British Bake Off & Master Chef also appeared.

There were also themed events in the local restaurants, pubs & cafes. Village groups & organisations also got involved with many of their own demonstrations and events. Added to this, there were cookery competitions, food tastings, tours, parties, picnics, entertainment and much more.

The finale of Food Week was the very popular Sunday Food Market, with  over 50 food stalls on the village green and surrounding streets.

In 2010 the first Where to Eat & Stay Guide was launched, this was expanded to various Village Guides from 2012 and 2015 which included where to eat, shop, stay, visit and what to do.

In 2010 and 2013 a Community Directory was published which featured local clubs, organisations, events, home services, charities, churches, kids' stuff, and lots more.

In 2015 a separate Village Tradesmen & Services Guide was published.

These hard copy publications are no longer in print as the information is now readily available online.

In 2016 we launched the Milford on Sea What's On Calendar to let people know about anything happening in the village.

In 2023 the What's Calendar became so full, so we decided to separate the Clubs & Classes into their own calendar.

Anyone can add their event, club, class, or regular activity to either of these calendars for free.

In 2020 over 4,000 historic photos from Milford on Sea were loaded to a Village Photo Album.
The albums include many historic photos from years gone by, as well as a number of past village events, and memories from the pandemic years.

You can see all of the village photo albums by clicking here.

The Where To Eat in Milford on Sea Guide continues to this day online. The guide features all of the places to eat in the village, as well as the village takeaway & delivery services.

In 2023 a separate Kids Dining Guide was produced.
------------------------------
Other Community Events Organised:

The Great Dining Bus ran from 2013 to 2015, Love Milford Week took place in 2015 including the Exotic Car Show, and The Queen's 90th Birthday Picnic was held in 2016.

Do you remember the Ruddle Family at Westover Hall?

Having read our recent article, The History of Westover Hall, Jonathan Ruddle, a relative of Anthony Ruddle a former owner at Westover Hall, is looking for local members of the Ruddle Family, or for anyone who worked at the hotel when he was there.

Jonathan would love to meet up with anyone who knew or worked with Anthony & Margaret to find out more about the family.

In 1984, Anthony Ruddle took over the ownership of Westover Hall with his wife, Margaret. At the time, the hotel had 11 bedrooms, and the restaurant ran on a silver service basis.

They had lived nearby at Swineys in Kivernell Road. Margaret Ruddle previously had a career in nursing at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Sadly, she passed away in November 1988 at the age of 54. The hotel was sold in the same year.

Please contact Jonathan Ruddle at jr@ruddle.net.

If anyone has any memories of Westover Hall, interesting photos, or artefacts, please make a post at the foot of this article, or send an email to:
