About Story of Milford Walking Tour

The old hamlet of Milford was mentioned in the Domesday Book: a few houses around a green and a watermill, having about 50 inhabitants. Nothing changed very much for centuries until the late Victorian age, when it decided to change its image.....

Stroll through the village of Milford-on-Sea and its lovely wooded Pleasure Grounds, while your guide relates how the sleepy hamlet of Milford tried to live down its smuggling days and changed its name to try to rival genteel Eastbourne.

Hear the story of the string of pearls seven yards long....

Long-term readers of Milford on Sea News may recall numerous articles following the career of Ellie Mans. The first being when she was a 12 old schoolgirl winning the HLCGA Junior County Handicap Champion in 2018.

Now 18, Ellie had started playing golf at the age of 6.

Most recently she has competed in the Dorset County Women's Team at the England Women’s County Finals at Kings Lynn Golf Club. Her team tied their first three games before finishing fourth overall after losing a tight contest to eventual champions Buckinghamshire.

Having completed her A-levels, for second year running, Ellie is now once again looking forward to preparing for the Justin Rose Telegraph Finals at Quinta Do Lago in November 2023.

Ellie plays at Brokenhurst Manor and Barton-on-Sea golf clubs, and won the Dorset Girls Championship in 2022.

As an all-round sportsperson, she has also played for the U10 Hampshire & IoW County Cup Tennis Team and Dorset County Hockey before playing in the Junior Netball World Cup.

Massive turnout at Manor Road Public Meeting

Around 300 residents attended the public meeting to discuss the proposed Manor Road Development on Wednesday 27th September at 7pm at The Bridge.

The meeting was organised by a recently formed group; the 'Milford Residents for Sustainable Development' who are concerned about numerous aspects of the proposed 'Manor Road Development'. Based on the numbers attending, it appears many Milford on Sea residents share their concerns.

The new group of residents, and are working closely with the SLAM (School Lane and Manor Road) group to try to ensure what they consider the best outcome for the village.

The issue related to a planning application which has been submitted for up to 191 residential dwellings on the land north of Manor Road, west of Lymington Road and east of Barnes Lane.  (NFDC Planning Ref: 23/10476)

The 'Milford Residents for Sustainable Development' consider that this development represents gross over development of the site and we wish to ensure that the NFDC Planning process takes full account of local opinion to ensure an appropriate level of development for this high-profile gateway site to the village.

At the close of the meeting, the organisers commented:

"We were overwhelmed by the level of support to object to the overdevelopment of this gateway site. We are determined to ensure that the scheme that might ultimately be approved enhances the village and the concerns and opinions of local residents are fully heard."

Comments can still be made to NFDC on the planning application by clicking here.

Magical Milford: The Plans Commence

Time is drawing near for Tracy Haupt and Diana Brushwood to have everything in place for the Christmas lights switch on and Carols on the Green.

Whilst it may seen a while off, there is much to do with the Christmas Trees arriving on Monday 28th November.

The Christmas Light Switch On, combined with Carols on the Green, and Late Night Shopping, is taking place on Friday 1st December.

Tracey commented:

"To put this event on costs approximately £6,500 which may surprise many.

The Magical Milford Team have to buy all of the Christmas trees, renew or repair the nativity scenes, employ qualified electricians who sort out the cabling and wire the lights to the trees on the green, plus fix the traders trees into the brackets complete with battery lights. We have annual storage fees for all materials and decorations and also need to cover the purchase of commercial grade lights, to replace and add to the displays and to cover any unforeseen expenses.

Last year, the electricians let Diana and Tracy know that many of the brackets above the shops were rusty and possibly not stable enough to continue to hold the 3ft trees safely. If we don’t change the brackets, they will not be prepared to fit the traders Christmas trees. Diana and Tracy made the decision to replace all the brackets above the shops, arranging for a contractor to fit them and make good the walls."

Diana and Tracy have a JustGiving page again this year and would welcome donations of any amount to make Christmas special in the village. You can make donations by clicking here.

Sponsorship: In addition, there will be sponsorship opportunities for local companies/people. If you are interested in being a sponsor, please email magicalmilford@gmail.com for more information.

You can keep in touch with all that is happening with Magical Milford on their Facebook Page at: www.facebook.com/MagicalMilford

Diana and Tracy hope that you will be able to support then again this year, as the village green looks so magical over the festive period and brings much joy to locals and visitors alike.
