Christmas Dining in Milford on Sea

06 July 2020

South Lawn reinvents itself again

Tim has given us another exciting update on new dining services from South Lawn Hotel and Cedar Tree restaurant:

We have spent the last couple of weeks preparing to re open our doors to the public and we are delighted to welcome so many new and familiar faces back over the 1st weekend with a soft re opening that allowed us to iron out any niggles with our Covid secure operating procedures.

South Lawn is blessed with loads of space and we have designed an amazing venue to keep our guests as safe as we can. Each of the three areas we have focused on are broken down into Inside, Outside and Marquee. Dining and lounge furniture is all spaced to conform to government guidelines and we have achieved the Visit England We're Good To Go status alongside many of the venues in the New Forest Area, Our aim is to provide an as near normal experience as possible with due consideration to being as Covid secure as possible. In addition to the very strict cleaning protocols in place we are also using a Virucidal Disinfectant Fogging machine in public areas and guest rooms.

Access is via the hotel reception as usual and in busy times we have a separate entrance through our Marquee. We chose to use a Marquee because it provides many of the benefits of being outside that you don't have from being in a restaurant or bar. Small groups of up to 6 are able to meet at the same table outside from multiple households. We have a number of different styles of seating in our Marquee which include Dining, Lounge and Poseur and we are very happy for small groups to join us for a sociable drink, snack or a full meal. The Marquee does provide somewhere dry if the weather lets us down but can be noisy in heavy wind and rain!

Outside we have the usual offering of dining furniture. Inside the restaurant looks very similar to before but with less tables and 1m+ spacing. Anybody is welcome for a meal, morning coffee, afternoon tea, a snack or just a drink and you can book a table in the Restaurant or Marquee or just turn up. We don't take bookings for garden tables but if you've booked a table inside and decide you prefer to sit in the garden when you arrive that's absolutely fine.

Tables cannot be laid up formally for now so we've changed the style of our menu to suit a much more casual dining experience, all the usual offerings are included but are complimented with some less formal but very tasty dishes. The new Monday to Saturday Menu and also a Sunday Lunch Menu are available from 12noon to 8pm. (See all the menus below)

We are still really busy with deliveries and we intend to keep our 'At Home' delivery service going for as long as we can as we appreciate how important this has become to many people in our community.

If anybody wishes to discuss their concerns or individual needs please don't hesitate to call us on 01590 643911.

Many thanks

Tim, Nikki and all the team.

For Want of a Groyne

Rachel Shattock dropped us a line to ask if we would publish her poem, we are always willing to help, so here we go:

As Rachel explains: It’s so upsetting to see the scale of the deterioration to the west of the White House. Milford’s last wooden beach huts are gone/going and the little shingle beach to the side of them is now completely washed away. The sea wall is cracked and broken in many places and the council appear to be doing nothing apart from fencing the area off, so locals and visitors can’t walk along the coastal path either. The lack of care and upkeep makes many of us sad and angry. And all for the want of a timely repair to a broken groyne!

FOR WANT OF A GROYNE
For want of a good groyne the beach was lost
For want of a beach the sea wall was lost
For want of a good wall the frontline was lost
For want of a frontline the seafront was lost
For want of a seafront Milford-on-Sea was lost
And all for the want of a good groyne

Anon.

La Perle continues with takeaways

Message from Sam at La Perle:

Regretfully, we have no immediate plans to reopen as a restaurant. Being such a small venue it would not be viable to have the required social distancing in place, so we have taken the decision to continue to offer our online delivery service for the foreseeable future.

We are also continuing to operate our Deli from the front door offering hot food, drinks etc from 11am to 8pm Mondays to Saturdays, so if you are in the village you may like to get yourself some lunch or a snack to take to the beach or the village green.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Ray's awarded 'We're Good To Go' Status

Ray's Italian Kitchen in Milford on Sea village centre has been awarded a 'We're Good To Go' certificate by VisitEngland in preparation for returning to a restaurant service in addition to their current takeaway/delivery service.

The certificate is in recognition that the business has confirmed that they have followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, ensuring processes are in place to maintain cleanliness and aid social/physical distancing.

Message from Stacey at Ray's Italian

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who has supported the restaurant and myself throughout this pandemic. I also thank you for your generosity in pledging on my crowdfunding page. For those of you who are unaware, we raised a massive £9600, which will go a long way to supporting the business over the coming months.

I am currently in the process of refurbishing the storeroom at the back of the restaurant to enable me to open the garden shortly.

I feel it’s essential that I share with you my thoughts on this and what measures I am putting in place and also what I am prepared to do at this moment in time, with regards to opening the doors to you.

From the Saturday 4th July, I will be extending the takeaway business hours to include Saturdays:
  • Wednesday 5pm - 8.30pm
  • Friday 5pm - 9pm
  • Saturday 5pm - 9pm
I will also be launching an online ordering system via the website.

I am also pleased to announce (due to popular demand) that I will be widening the delivery service to the following surrounding areas (at a cost of £2.50 per delivery):
  • Everton
  • Barton on Sea
  • New Milton
  • Sway
  • Hordle
  • Lymington

Restaurant
With regards to opening the restaurant, I have always had everyone’s health & safety in mind throughout this whole process. We have come so far in this and rushing an opening when the virus is still out there, even if it’s at bay, is not something I am prepared to do at the current moment.

I will not be opening the main restaurant at this time but I will be opening the garden on a pre-booking/ pre-order/ pre-payment basis only. This is necessary to aid compliance with the government guidance, with Track & Trace and contactless payments.

I will be taking booking for the restaurant on Wednesdays, Fridays & Saturdays from the 8th July between 5pm and 8pm.

The earlier tables will be re-laid for the later sitting. Later tables will need to vacated by 9.45pm at the latest.

I will be running two menus, available on request or you can find them on our website. A children’s menu will be available at £12.50 per child under 12yrs.

Bookings can only be made for your own household or one other household (maximum 2 households per booking) in our garden, as we may have to move your booking into our garden room if weather is bad.

On booking you will be sent a copy of my terms and conditions, which I respectfully ask you all to adhere to. This is an unprecedented time we are living in and I have to protect myself, my family, my team, my business and my other diners. Bookings should be made by e-mail ONLY.

We all have a part to play in this. If one person comes into the restaurant who has Covid 19, my restaurant will be forced to close for 14 days and I really cannot afford for this to happen which is why I am opening with caution. I have managed to offer a service, albeit limited since lockdown and I would be absolutely heartbroken should I have to close due to circumstances out of my control so please be responsible.

My aim is to run like this in July and I will then review August and communicate further plans later in the month.

I really look forward to the day we are able to open the restaurant following Government guidance. Until then thank you for your understanding, patience and loyalty.

Stay safe, best wishes

Stacey

MOSHRS Podcast: Milford in Domesday

Milford on Sea Historical Record Society have launched their latest podcast, this time the subject offers more stories relating to Milford in Domesday.

When William the Conqueror became king of England in 1066, he destroyed the Anglo Saxon aristocracy replacing it with 200 Norman and French barons. But what happened in Milford? Milford was in Rowditch, the southern-most hundred [district] in Hampshire.

See the latest podcast to discover:
  • Why King William gave the manor of Hordle, the most valuable in the Rowditch Hundred, to Ralph Mortimer.
  • Why a third of the manors in Rowditch Hundred remained in Anglo Saxon hands.
  • How Aelfric, the Anglo Saxon lord of Milford manor, built at Milford the church which was to become the centre of the Ancient Parish of Milford.

MOSHRS would like to share the video with the whole village.

Village Masks raise £1000

Milford on Sea WI rapidly became part of New Forest Sewing for the NHS, organised by Becton Rotary, when the pandemic broke. WI members, together with friends and neighbours in the village have sewn scrub bags, headbands and scrub caps for use in our local hospitals and care homes. Approximately 2000 items were made and distributed. Ladies, and a few gentlemen, also ironed in excess of 3000 plastic gowns which apparently were better made than those obtained commercially!

Their latest achievement is to make in excess of 700 face coverings which are all recyclable. They have been available for anyone from The Pharmacy at Milford Medical Centre, Time and Tide and The Cave.

Donations were asked for the masks in aid of New Forest Basics Bank. On Tuesday 23rd June, the total raised hit a magnificent £1000 which will be put to good use in the coming months.

Face coverings are still available in a multitude of designs and fabrics. Please support this local initiative.

Huge thanks are due to everyone who has sewn all these items or donated for the masks.

A Funny Bike Ride

Anyone who has been to a Comedy Night at Milford on Sea Community Centre, or who watched the Milford Comedy Night on YouTube last Thursday evening, will recognise Stephen Grant.

Stephen is an established comedian and the regular host of the Milford on Sea Comedy Nights.

Yesterday he set himself a goal attempting to cycle for the whole day. Stephen explains; "And by that I mean, I’ll start when the Sun comes up and finish when the Sun goes down. No particular reason why, other than the fact that I can."

So, leaving his home in Brighton as the sun come up he set out to see how far he could go in daylight.

He made it to Norwich! - That’s 200 miles (323km), and finally got home by car 23 hours after he got up.  During the ride he averaged over 15mph and burnt over 10,000 calories!

He managed a final comment before bed; "The sun has just gone down so It’s done, and so am I."

Not sure I would have been able to speak at all if I had tried that arduous adventure!

To see Stephen's journey in pictures, please click here.
