Support Sol as he represents Great Britain in Rowing

An impressive Milford on Sea Teenager, Sol Chamberlain-Hyde at just 17, has been selected by British Rowing to be one of only two U19 males in the GB Beach Sprints Team.

An exciting new format of rowing and one which is being introduced in the Commonwealth Games in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028, Beach Sprints.

This racing involves running to the boat, navigating a coastal slalom rowing course and sprinting from the boat to the finishing flag on the beach. Skilful sculling, power, navigation, quick-thinking and nimble running are all part of the successful speedy package and as the youngest member of the GB team, Sol demonstrates them all.

Selected by Tom Pattichis, the British Rowing Olympic Pathway Coach, Sol shows a lot of potential, winning the English U19 Beach Sprints Championships and being jointly crowned the winner of the Four Nations Championships (England, Scotland, Wales and Jersey) this year.

He has recently returned from Gdansk, Poland, where having only been in a boat a handful of times with his newly selected partner, Leah (18 from Evesham), he successfully placed fourth in the U19 mixed doubles at the European Championships in June 2024.

With a full summer of training with Leah ahead of him, Sol’s next major race is the World Championships in September 2024 in Italy.

In order to facilitate his journey Sol is looking for sponsorship, as whilst British Rowing support him entirely with coaching, Sol supplies his own blades and has to pay fully for his international trips in order to race and represent Great Britain.

In addition to his ‘A’ Levels, Sol is working for Solent Rib Charters and Lymington Sea Water Baths, but on top of training six days a week he is struggling to secure the time and the funding for his next stage of racing.

Please Support Sol: Should you wish to make a donation to help support Sol, be it small or large, from an individual or indeed sponsorship from a company.

School Kids Sculpture Trail around village

The Year 6 pupils at Milford on Sea Primary School have created a range of sculptures which you may spot as you travel around the village.

The sculptures were made using beach and forest litter collected by the children and their families. The discarded items were then reinforced with Modrock plaster bandage and then painted.

The children were inspired by sculptor Antony Gormley who once said “Sculptures make you aware of the world, and your time and place in it; they are in the world - they change the world and contribute to it.”

Each life-sized sculpture is designed to represent issues relevant to our place and time and display messages about our local environmental issues.

If the weather allows, it is planned to keep the sculptures in place until the end of August.

To read more, please click here.

The children also made a video explaining the project, please click here to view.

--------------------------
The project has been coordinated by Victoria Waller. Victoria lives in Milford on Sea and she is currently a teaching assistant with Year 6 at Milford on Sea Primary School and will be the Forest School teacher at the school from September 2024.

Victoria is also an artist, sustainability enthusiast. educator, teacher, researcher, and mother.

When she moved to the village Victoria became deeply aware of the fragility of living by the coast, exposed to strong weather in a time of sea-level rise and climate change. This prompted extensive research into the projected impacts and potential mitigation actions for climate change locally.

Her website born out of a desire to share a love for the wonderful natural spaces around us.

Victoria is also a talented artist whose work is inspired by local scenes and includes drawings and abstract art. She also runs art classes for children.

Her portfolio and pieces for sale can be seen on her website.

Did you know that we have a Community Meadow?

Sometimes we all like to visit an oasis of peace and calm for relaxation. Well, did you know that the village has a Community Meadow for all to enjoy?

The Community Meadow, just beside All Saints' Church, was opened by Milford on Sea Parish Council when hosting a village picnic on Saturday 22nd June 2019.

The meadow was bequeathed by the late Diane Gillespie, a generous Milford on Sea resident.

The legacy was in two parcels of land, one made to the Friends of Christchurch Priory, the other to Milford on Sea Parish Council on condition that it should remain an open space to the benefit of the community.

The Community Meadow has benches on which to sit as you enjoy the surroundings, and is accessed through a metal gate in a wall in All Saints’ churchyard.

A nice idea of a new place to discover and enjoy on bright summer days.

Volunteer Gardeners Needed for Community Meadow

The Community Meadow is looked after by a small enthusiastic group of local people, and they need more hands to ensure that their hard work does not fall into disrepair.

If you love spending some time outside amongst nature and would like to find out more, please contact Sue Crabb on milfordgardeners@gmail.com.

--------------------------------
In December 2022 The Friends of Milford Meadow were pleased to report that following significant local objection, a planning application by Bayview Developments to build a four-bedroom house on  the Friends of Christchurch Priory land close to the Community Meadow was refused.

High Street Shop changing to Residential

A former retail shop at 96 High Street, Milford on Sea, SO41 0QE has had approval to covert the building for residential use.

Most recently the shop was occupied by the Tradewinds Gallery which had  a range of art and decorative items for the home. When this closed the property was used as offices for a short time.

The shop has been unoccupied for five years and no one has been interested in reletting the premises.

The new build will contain a two-storey side extension on a semi-detached property, front dormer windows, a single-storey rear extension and new vehicular access.

It will be interesting to see what the new house will look like, as the current footprint is relatively small and narrows, almost to a point from front to back.

The planning permission has stipulated that the external facing materials need to match those on the existing building.

Parish Council investigate Solar Panels in Field Concept

A recent article by Roz Waters in the Advertiser & Times reported on a 'Solar panel ambition for Milford Parish Council'.

The idea is that a field owned by Milford on Sea Parish Council could be developed into a small solar farm.

A previous plan to create a woodland area on the site close to Scholar’s Retreat were shelved due to coastal erosion and weather conditions.

Until recently, the green space was used for grazing livestock, however, the previous tenant has now left the fields.

This potential project is currently at an early stage and investigations are taking place to establish the feasibility of the idea.
